Over a period of time the craft had acquired sufficient sophistication and regional and caste associations to facilitate its cla.'isification into as many as twenty two schools. five major and three minor ones and fourteen others obtaining in the Kutch and Saurashtra re~ions respectively. The work is known to have been done mostly for personal use. till it was exploited for commercial purposes in later years. It is commonly done in free hand. fJut the use of woodell blocks for printing the basic design of motifs to be embroidered is rot llnknown. The detailed work on the chakla displayed on this vollime identifies the specimen with the Mochi school of Saurashtra. rather than of Kutch, the latter 0/ which W(lS marked by ~reater simplicity. The accent on articles of war. like helmets. dar!gers and spears in the extreme centre surrounded by caparisoned horses and elephants bespeak of royal patronage or commission. The borders revert to the common motifs 0/ human figures. floral dCJi;':lls. birds and. ollfimals and geometric forms. The intricacy 0/ the work. while frowned lIpon by connoisseurs. nevertheless testifies 10 a mastery of the craft. (Block from an ink tracing by K. D. Vaishnav.
