Many members of this community shared a history of migration into Gujarat from the southern Arabian Peninsula, north Africa, Iran, Central Asia and the neighboring territories of the Indian subcontinent. I analyze two key aspects related to the making of a community of ii learned Muslim men in the fifteenth century - the production of a variety of texts in Persian and Arabic by learned Muslims and the construction of tomb shrines sponsored by the sultans of Gujarat.

Ecological parameters and edaphic characteristics were studied for different sites i.e. Navsari, Surat and Bhavnagar. Avicennia marina was found as dominant species at all study sites. Plant species diversity shows increasing tendency with the decrease in plant density. Important Value Index, Shannon-Weaver diversity index and Simpson index of dominance of the mangrove species across the study area were also determined. The present study provides the baseline data of mangrove species and concludes the need of detail study for mangrove species in Gulf of Khambhat, Gujarat for conservation and management strategies. Keywords: Mangrove plants - Avicennia marina - IVI - Plant density - Conservation. [Cite as: Devi V & Pathak B (2016) Ecological studies of mangroves species in Gulf of Khambhat, Gujarat. Tropical Plant Research 3(3): 536–542] INTRODUCTION Mangrove forest ecosystems are significant for the biodiversity, protection of coastal area from erosion and provision of protected nursery breading areas for marine fauna. Ecological study of any area or habitat helps to understand the inter-relationship of all biotic (plants, microbes, other organisms) and abiotic (temperature, moisture and soil etc.) components of environment.

In 1722–1723, forces led by Khanthaji Kadani and Pilaji Gaekwad attempted to raid Sihor but were repelled by Maharaja Bhavsinhji Gohil. After the war Bhavsinhji realised the reason for repeated attack was the location of Sihor (old Bhavnagar). In 1823, he established a new capital near Vadva village, 20 km away from Sihor, and named it Bhavnagar. It was a carefully chosen strategic location because of its potential for maritime trade. Naturally, Bhavnagar City became the capital of Bhavnagar State Bhavnagar Boroz. The old town of Bhavnagar was a fortified town with gates leading to other important regional towns. It remained a major port for almost two centuries, trading commodities with Mozambique, Zanzibar, Singapore, and the Persian Gulf.
  • Coastline of Gujarat 2012

    Coastline of Gujarat 2012

INTRODUCTION India has a coastline of about 7,500 km , with nearly 250 million people living within 50 km of the coast. The coastal area accounts for 130 cities and a very significant share of India's economic infrastructure. Maritime facilities, petroleum industries, and import-based industries are located in the coastal zone, in addition to a large number of poor villages that depend on fishing for livelihood. The coastal areas are also subject to recurrent natural disasters such as cyclones and floods, and the 2005 tsunami devastated large areas especially along the eastern coastal states. India's coastal zone is endowed with a wide range of mangroves, coral reefs, sea grasses, salt marshes, sand dunes, estuaries, lagoons, and unique marine and terrestrial flora and fauna. Due to increasing human population, urbanization and accelerated developmental activities, including industrial and maritime development, the coastal areas have been assuming greater importance in recent years. 1 India is home to numerous beaches as a result of its extensive coastline. Whether it is a secluded beach in Andamans or a party beach of Goa, beaches in India attract thousands of tourists every year. Kerala, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Lakshwadeep, Maharashtra, Orissa and Tamil Nadu offer spectacular beaches. The most popular ones in India are Anjuna, Dona Paula, Baga and Calangute Beaches in Goa; Juhu Beach in Maharashtra; Marari and Kovalam Beaches in Kerala and Marina Beach in Chennai. Gujarat in particular has great potential for Somnath Digha developing beach tourism. At about 1600 km, Gujarat Porbandar Chandipur Konark Diu Daman Bubhaneswar Dahanu on the west coast has the longest coastline amongst Puri Manori Gopalpur Kihim the Indian states and is bestowed with several good Bheemunipatnam Alibagh Waltair Hamai Vishakhapatnam beaches.
