Suomi osti nämä Dornierin tehtaalle jääneet Saksalainen Dornier-Werke suunnitteli uudenveroiset koneet syyskuussa 1941. yksimoottorisen ja ylätasoisen Do 22 -lentokoneen siten, että se voitiin varustaa tarpeen mukaan Suomalainen komennuskunta lensi koneet pyörillä, kellukkeilla tai suksilla. Ensimmäinen Suomeen saapuen Malmille 1. lokakuuta 1941. sarjakone lensi kellukkeilla heinäkuussa 1938. Suomessa koneet D-OXWF, D-OXWG, D-OXWD DR-196 Santahaminassa elokuussa 1942 syvyyspommilla aseistettuna. Sivuvakaajaan on maalattu voitonmerk- kinä sukellusveneen silhuetti 23.6.1942 syvyyspommihyökkäysten perusteella. Sukellusvene SC-406 ei kuitenkaan tuhoutunut.
