    Forth Seabird Group Forth Islands Bird Report 2010 Compiled by Bill Bruce April 2011 SEABIRD SPECIES SUMMARIES 2010 Note: AOS = Apparently occupied sites; AON = Apparently occupied nests; AOB = Apparently occupied burrows; AOT = Apparently occupied territories FULMAR GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL Overall, total numbers are very similar to last year On Fidra, Carr Craig and Inchmickery numbers (up 18 birds, 1%) are the same as last year while all other islands show a decrease. Overall numbers are down by 12 CORMORANT AON (17%) On Craigleith and Inchkeith breeding numbers LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL & are exactly the same as last year. For the second HERRING GULL year none were breeding on Haystack while on Carr Craig and Lamb numbers are down. Overall These gulls were counted on Inchkeith, the first numbers are down by 21 AON or 8%. count since 2002. Das Castle ist der Inbegriff der trutzigen Stärke und Pracht einer mittelalterlichen Burg. Die Geschichte ist eng mit der Geschichte der Familien verknüpft, die hier lebten – die de Vaux, die Halyburtons und die Ruthvens. Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH DIRLETON CASTLE SYNOPSIS Dirleton Castle, in the heart of the pretty East Lothian village of that name, is one of Scotland's oldest masonry castles. Built around the middle of the 13th century, it remained a noble residence for four centuries. Three families resided there, and each has left its mark on the fabric – the de Vauxs (13th century – the cluster of towers at the SW corner), the Haliburtons (14th/15th century – the entrance gatehouse and east range) and the Ruthvens (16th century – the Ruthven Lodging, dovecot and gardens). The first recorded siege of Dirleton Castle was in 1298, during the Wars of Independence with England. The last occurred in 1650, following Oliver Cromwell’s invasion. However, Dirleton was primarily a residence of lordship, not a garrison stronghold, and the complex of buildings that we see today conveys clearly how the first castle was adapted to suit the changing needs and fancies of their successors.

    Representation to East Lothian Council Local Development Plan, Main Issues Report CALA Management Ltd - In respect of land at Pinkie Mains Farm, Inveresk Question 11: Musselburgh Cluster The Site The site is known as Pinkie Mains Farm and is currently open agricultural farmland. It extends to some 4.4 ha and is located at the southern edge of Inveresk Village, bounded by Edenhall Hospital to the north, the East Coast Main Line (in cutting) to the south and east and by Crookston Road to the west. The extent of the site and an illustrative proposal is identified in the supporting Development Strategy Document, prepared by OPEN. This submission is also made against the background of a Transport Statement prepared by Transport Planning Ltd. Both documents are attached. Background This site was previously submitted to East Lothian Council as part of a significantly larger proposal, by Wallace Land at the call for sites stage of this emerging Local Development Plan (LDP). That proposal comprised some 14 hectares and identified a development capacity of 300 homes. That developer is not involved with the landowner at Pinkie Mains and the previous proposal is no longer relevant. The current site is promoted by CALA with the full backing of the landowner. It is considerably smaller at just 4.4 ha and with an indicative development capacity of 45 units over 2.6 ha. CALA Representation This representation proposes the inclusion of the subject site within the East Lothian Council LDP as a residential allocation. CALA proposes an indicative development capacity of 45 units, including the requirement to provide an allocation of affordable housing.
