Directions from Johannesburg and Pretoria Directions from Johannesburg and Pretoria Take the M2 East coming from Johannesburg South on N3 (Durban/Kimberley) from N2 OR Take the N3 South coming from Pretoria. Follow the N3 South and keep right for N12 (Bloemfontein) until the R59 to Vereeniging (left fork). Carry on South on the R59 for 51 km to Vereeniging. Take Voortrekker Street off-ramp (M27 into Voortrekker). Go through 4 traffic lights (1st traffic light – CTM on left; 2nd traffic light – Vaal Toyota on left; 3rd traffic light - Xtra Shoes on left; 4th traffic light – Renault on left). At the 5th traffic light, after passing under a railway bridge, turn left into De Villiers Avenue. Follow the road to the next traffic light. At this traffic light turn left and drive under the subway bridge. At the next traffic light turn right into Mario Milani Drive. The BON Hotel Riviera on Vaal will be on your left hand side. Directions from Johannesburg and Pretoria via the Grasmere Toll Plaza Take the N1 South out of Pretoria to Johannesburg. Take the N1 South and follow to Bloemfontein. Go through the Grasmere Toll Plaza. ± 20 minutes after the toll route take the Vanderbijlpark/Sasolburg off-ramp R57 Golden Highway (on left). Travel for 10.6km, pass through one stop street and 2 traffic lights. At the 3rd traffic light turn left onto the R42 to Vereeniging. Pass through all the traffic lights until you have passed Pick ’n Pay Hypermarket (Bedworthpark) on your right hand side. Continue over traffic light staying on the R42. You are now entering Vereeniging. Once in Vereeniging drive through the 1st traffic light (Rand Water on left) through and the 2nd traffic light (Habby and Lace on left). At the third traffic light turn right into Victoria Avenue. Go through one traffic light and under the railway bridge. At the next stop street take the slip way to your left into Mario Milani Drive. The BON Hotel Riviera on Vaal will be on your right hand side. Directions from O.R. Tambo (Johannesburg) International Airport Drive out of the parking/drop off zone. Take the R24 to Johannesburg (keep right). At the N3 intersection (10.3 km) keep left and follow the N3 Durban/Kimberley. (Right goes to N3 Johannesburg/Pretoria). At N3/M2 intersection keep right, following the N3 to Durban/Kimberley. (Left goes to M2 Germiston/Johannesburg). At N3/N12 intersection keep right onto N12 following N12 to Bloemfontein, Vereeniging and Kimberley. (Left goes to N3 Heidelberg/Durban/Springs). At N12/R59 intersection keep left onto R59 following R59 to Johannesburg, Alberton (South) and Vereeniging. (Right goes on with N12 to Kimberley). Keep left on R59 South to Alberton/Vereeniging. (Right goes to R59 Johannesburg). Carry on for approximately 50 kilometres and take the Voortrekker Street off-ramp in Vereeniging. Go through 4 traffic lights (1st traffic light – CTM on left; 2nd traffic light – Vaal Toyota on left; 3rd traffic light - Xtra Shoes on left; 4th traffic light – Renault on left). These have significant influences, both positive and negative, on the socio-economic and bio -physical environments. In the case of South Africa’s river systems and riparian zones, mining and its associated activities have negatively impacted upon these systems. The Blesbokspruit Catchment Area and Grootvlei Mines Limited (hereafter called “Grootvlei”) are located in Gauteng Province of South Africa. The chosen study area is east of the town of Springs in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality on the East Rand of Gauteng Province. Grootvlei, which has been operating underground mining activities since 1934, is one of the last operational mines in this area. Grootvlei pumps extraneous water from its underground mine workings into the Blesbokspruit, which includes the Blesbokspruit Ramsar site. This pumping ensures that the mine workings are not flooded, which would result in the gold reserves becoming inaccessible and would shortly lead to the closure of Grootvlei. This closure would further affect at least three other marginal gold mines in the area, namely, Springs-Dagga, Droogebult-Wits and Nigel Gold Mine, all which rely on Grootvlei’s pumping to keep their workings dry. Being shallower than Grootvlei, they are currently able to operate without themselves having to pump any extraneous water from their underground workings.

The project aims to provide a safe and reli- Improvement Project (GFIP) which is a far-reaching up- able strategic road network and to optimise, among others, grading programme for the province’s major freeway traffic flow and the movement of freight and road-based networks in and around the Metropolitan Municipalities public transport. 1 The GFIP is being implemented in phases.
