INTRODUCTION I learned to show this reverence and respect only to those books of the scriptures that are now called canonical so that I most firmly believe that none of their authors erred in writing anything. And if I come upon something in those writings that seems contrary to the truth, I have no doubt that either the manuscript is defective or the translator did not follow what was said or that I did not understand it. I, however, read other authors in such a way that, no matter how much they excel in holiness and learning, I do not suppose that something is true by reason of the fact that they thought so, but because they were able to convince me either through those canonical authors or by plausible reason that it does not depart from the truth.1 Augustine to Jerome, Letter 82 Martin Luther and his reforming colleagues maintained that Scripture alone determines the articles of faith. All that the church believes, teaches, and confesses rests upon the authority of the canonical scriptures, upon the unique revelation of God himself through his prophets and apostles. The Friendships of St. Thomas
THE FRIENDSHIPS OF ST. THOMAS BRO. CYRIL DORE, 0 . P. T . Thomas Aquinas is a perfect type of that harmonious un ion of sanctity and learning which characterizes the great Doctors of the Church. A tender affection and a sympathetic understanding, which unites hearts entirely devoted to God, can be observed in all his friendships. While bearing himself affably towards all, the Angelic Doctor had but few intimate friends and these were persons of singular learning and holiness. From a consideration of these few, we can see the great influence for good which he exerted, the wide extent of his knowledge, and the deep penetration of his in tellectual prowess. They not only give us an insight into the reaction of personality on personality and the interplay of mind on mind, but in a very special manner, they exhibit the practical aspect of his writ ings. From the investigations of his biographers, the friendships of St. Thomas can be considered under four headings; namely, within his own Order, in the religious world, in the academic world, and in the political world. Amongst the members of the Dominican Order, the first friend mentioned is John of St. Julian. He is referred to as the old adviser and dear familiar friend of St. Thomas.1 This celebrated preacher directed the footsteps of the young Aquinas during the three years previous to his entrance into the Dominican Order. As a student at the University of Naples, the mind and imagination of Aquinas were captivated by the sanctity, the learning and the marvellous activ ity of the Dominicans. -

Existe, pues, una continuidad de pensamiento entre los Padres como re- presentantes de la autoridad de los Apóstoles y la Biblia. Por este motivo, sería bueno re- conocer cuán profundamente santo Tomás se inspira en el pensamiento de los Padres. En esta contribución presentaremos los temas principales dentro de los escritos de los Padres Alejandrinos y Capadocios que han influido en el propio pensamiento de santo Tomás. Abstract: St. Thomas considers the writings of the Fathers as directly related to Scrip- ture since these were composed under the guiding influence of the same Holy Spirit. There exists therefore a continuity of thought between the Fathers as representatives of the au- thority of the Apostles and the Bible.1 For this reason, one would do well to recognize how deeply St. Thomas draw upon the thought of the Fathers. In this contribution we will present the main themes within the writings of the Alexandrian and Cappadocian Fathers that have influenced St. Thomas’s own thought.2 Key words: Athanasius of Alexandria, Cyril of Alexandria, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Thomas Aquinas. -

The first two sections introduce the life and works of Thomas Aquinas, with a particular focus on the Scriptum and the Summa theologiae. The third section treats Thomas’s reception up through 1500, looking at the initial period of condemnation in the late thirteenth century. This is followed by his canonization and acceptance as a theological authority in the fourteenth century and the gradual development of the Thomist schools of the fifteenth century. The fourth and fifth sections examine the reception of Thomas’s thought in the era of Church reform and the baroque period (1500–1650), and from 1650 until Aeterni Patris (1879) respectively. When Thomas was five years old he was sent to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Casino, the ancient abbey founded by Benedict of Nursia in 529. For the next ten years Thomas was educated by the Benedictines and introduced to the rhythms of monastic life. -

Theological Studies 62 (2001) THOMAS AQUINAS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DOCTRINE CHRISTOPHER KACZOR [Almost all scholars deny that Aquinas had an account of develop- ment of doctrine and most also believe that his theology is simply incompatible with doctrinal development. As a result, Aquinas’s theology has fallen out of favor with many contemporary theolo- gians rightly concerned with doctrinal development. The author ar- gues that Aquinas’s account of the nature of the articles of faith as derived from Scripture excludes any exhaustive understanding of revelation thereby opening the door to development. Aquinas fore- shadowed aspects of the logical, organic, and historical approaches to development of doctrine elaborated by later theologians.] ELDOM IS THE NAME Thomas Aquinas associated with doctrinal devel- S opment. I would like to propose that, contrary to the views of some, Thomistic theology is in fact compatible with development of doctrine and further that Aquinas himself provided resources for understanding devel- opment. Thomas’s teaching on development as logical deduction, organic assimilation, and historically situated is to be found in no single place and must be gleaned, if it is to be known at all, from various passages in the Thomistic corpus. This article describes and systematizes Aquinas’s obiter dicta remarks pertaining to the development of doctrine which he always understood as the unfolding of implicit teaching into more explicit formu- lation and reflects on the importance of the Thomistic account for contem- porary thinking on development. The first is a translation from Latin into English of St Thomas Aquinas’s Quaestio disputata de spiritualibus creaturis. This is an important, though largely neglected, work of St Thomas dating from 1267- 68, dealing with a range of issues relating to the two categories of created spirits reco- gnised by Thomas, viz. angels and human souls. The perspective of the Angelic Doctor is principally, though not exclusively, that of philosophy rather than of theology. What is found in the disputed question is the development of a number of arguments, and the consequent taking up of a number of positions, that are the immediate source of what St Thomas has to say about angels and the human soul in the first part (prima pars) of his Summa Theologiae - a part which was completed by 1268. -

Dionysian Hierarchy in Thomas Aquinas: Tradition and Transformation published in Denys l' Aréopagite et sa postérité en Orient et en Occident, Actes du Colloque International Paris, 21-24 septembre 1994, édités Ysabel de Andia, Collection des Études Augustiniennes, Série Antiquité 151 (Paris: Institut d’Études Augustiniennes, 1997), 405-438. Denys is now central to our reflection on the thought of Thomas Aquinas. This revision both of what we find in Aquinas and of how we judge his thought is enabled by the advance of Neoplatonic scholarship as well as by the change in the moral climate of scholarly investigation. This colloque manifests a sense for traditions, now more adequately balancing the scholarly search for sources, which imagined a return to the purity of the original fountains. The hermeneutical approach has not the moralistic judgementalism exhibited by the older philology when it uncovered the fraud of a pseudoanonymous author and the naiveté of those who accepted his self-representation. We are more ready than our predecessors to appreciate the authenticity of an identification with St. Paul on the Areopagus by one who wished, following him, to lead his hearers to the ‘Unknown God’. Equally, we are not so ready to regard as dupes those who found in Denys the Unknown mysteriously revealed. But, here we move beyond developments and transformations in historical scholarship. We touch what is specific to contemporary developments in religion, philosophy and theology. And so we confront changes in the place which Thomas occupies for us as well as transformations in our representation of his thought. Our appreciation of the importance of Denys is bound up with the self- overcoming of the Neothomism of the Leonine revival.1 Erected against what it conceived as modern idealisms, like the condemned ‘Ontologism’, Neothomist suspicion extended even to the Neoplatonism of Augustine.2 No Platonism served its various purposes.
