KENT BEE-KEEPERS' ASSOCIATION County Newsletter No.S4 September 2016 Kent Beekeepers Associations Tent 2016 The beekeepers from the four associations in Kent (Dover, Kent, Medway and Thanet) came together to provide an exhibition showing how we keep bees and the range of the activities that covers. We aim to introduce the general public to bees and beekeeping and to explain some of the importance of bees to the economy and our diet. The stands inside the tent for the general public covered the products of pollination, examples of bee friendly plants, hive to jar covering where honey comes from and how the honey is extracted, candle making, Sheppey Honey Products (group that involves prisoners in beekeeping activities) and opportunities to purchase honey and wax products. Our two observation hives were, as ever, very busy. The Bumble Bee, Wasps and Hornets display always draws a lot of interest and we were again pleased to have the assistance of the Bumble Bee Trust volunteers. We aim to provide activities for all groups so include candle-rolling, badge-making and solitary bee house building primarily for young people but we found that people of all ages had a go. The beekeepers and potential beekeepers are not left out as our Education and Information stand was very busy. Outside the tent, we have two activities. Next to the entrance to the tent was our skep-making demonstration. In the fenced area at the end of the tent was the area used to run a series of "Uve bee demonstrations" during the day. All the demonstrators are from our local associations and Sheppey Honey Products and all the four demonstrations per day were very well attended. -

CHILHAM: STOUR VALLEY Location map: CHILHAMCHARACTER AREA DESCRIPTION North of Bilting, the Stour Valley becomes increasingly enclosed. The rolling sides of the valley support large arable fields in the east, while sweeps of parkland belonging to Godmersham Park and Chilham Castle cover most of the western slopes. On either side of the valley, dense woodland dominate the skyline and a number of substantial shaws and plantations on the lower slopes reflect the importance of game cover in this area. On the valley bottom, the river is picked out in places by waterside alders and occasional willows. The railway line is obscured for much of its length by trees. STOUR VALLEY Chilham lies within the larger character area of the Stour Valley within the Kent Downs AONB. The Great Stour is the most easterly of the three rivers cutting through the Downs. Like the Darent and the Medway, it too provided an early access route into the heart of Kent and formed an ancient focus for settlement. Today the Stour Valley is highly valued for the quality of its landscape, especially by the considerable numbers of walkers who follow the Stour Valley Walk or the North Downs Way National Trail. Despite its proximity to both Canterbury and Ashford, the Stour Valley retains a strong rural identity. Enclosed by steep scarps on both sides, with dense woodlands on the upper slopes, the valley is dominated by intensively farmed arable fields interspersed by broad sweeps of mature parkland. Unusually, there are no electricity pylons cluttering the views across the valley. North of Bilting, the river flows through a narrow, pastoral floodplain, dotted with trees such as willow and alder and drained by small ditches. -

Maxine Fothergill – District Councillors annual report Fawkham and West Kingsdown Ward Firstly I would again, sincerely like to thank all residents for providing your trust and faith in me, by electing me as your ward councillor from May 2019 to May 2023. It has been a very interesting year to date, after originally coming from the Bexley area, where I had formally been a Borough Councillor for 8 years. In a London Borough, decisions are made by the main administration and also directly funded. However, here in Sevenoaks District Council we are a 3 tier system with KCC as the overarching Council, having the majority of funding for all major items, then SDC who deal with all local issues including weekly refuse collections and then of course, the Parish Councils, which is where all the local work really does take place and rightly so, as the Parish Council has the full and in-depth understanding of the needs of our local residents. As many of you will know, I got very involved when the proposed development plans were announced and after coming to live in the beautiful village of Fawkham; surrounded by acres of green belt and ancient woodland, with only 221 homes and less than 500 residents, the last thing I wanted to see was the desecration of our quaint little hamlet and hence why I stood to represent you at last year’s local elections. This past year has been very interesting. I personally had attended practically every West Kingsdown Parish Council meeting in my District Councillor capacity, to ensure I am fully aware of all local issues and being a member of Fawkham Parish Council, I have naturally attended the majority of meetings, (with the exception of one meeting when I was on a sponsored charity sleep out on behalf of Centrepoint, where I am delighted to advise, I raised over £900 for homeless young people, in order to help them get a roof over their heads and rebuild their lives). -

56 The Villainous Wife in the Middle Welsh Chwedleu Seith Doethon Rufein. Carys Gadsden Chwedleu Seith Doethon Rufein is a Middle Welsh prose reworking of the hugely successful, if misogynistic, story of the Seven Sages of Rome, versions of which were found across Medieval Europe from the late twelfth century onwards.1 It is found in three Middle Welsh manuscripts dating from the fifteenth century, two held at the Bodleian Library, Oxford and the third at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.2 The Welsh text was probably written in the late fourteenth century, by a redactor named in one of the witness manuscripts, Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Jesus College 20, [J20], as ‘Llywelyn Offeiriad’ (Llywelyn the Priest).3 It features a collection of tales set within a frame story reminiscent of the Biblical tale of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39:7/20) where a married woman lusts after a young man; when she is rebuffed she accuses the youth of rape and seeks vengeance. In the frame tale of The Seven Sages of Rome the young man is a Roman Emperor’s son and the wicked woman is the hero’s stepmother who, when her improper advances are spurned, accuses the boy of attempted rape and demands that he be put to death. The Emperor believes his wife’s malign accusation and orders the execution of his only son. The young prince must remain silent for seven days to avoid this fate and so cannot speak to defend himself, however, his tutors, the eponymous Seven Sages of Rome, obtain a stay of execution by relating a series of misogynistic tales, which are countered by the Empress with tales aimed at discrediting the Sages as well as their charge. -

The investigations revealed signs of a human presence as early as the Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic period, with further occupation in later prehistory, though few features pre-dating the Roman occupation were identified. Although there was a little evidence for activity in the early Roman period the most extensive and significant phase of occupation of the site was during the 3rd and 4th centuries when a small settlement was established, apparently over part of an earlier field system. The core of the settlement however, lay beyond the area of investigation and therefore it was difficult to ascertain its likely extent and function, though it was probably part of a complex network of small agricultural settlements that occupied much of the Darent Valley and areas beyond during the Roman period.
