Nikolas Hartmann Mike Eijgendaal, 3/8/21 started the first four games, earning AAC accolades in his first three starts. At one point Sean Karani, 4/5/21 the Ibaza native was tied for the conference lead in saves. After struggling in the first Amir Cohen, 4/12/21 half against USF he was replaced with Eoin Gawronski. Gawronski impressed in his first collegiate appearance and earned the start against SMU. He became the first keeper in AAC Defensive Player of the Week over 18 months to earn a clean sheet against the Mustangs. Pierre Cayet, 3/8/21 Pierre Cayet, 3/15/21 SAME CONFERNCE, LESS TEAMS This week will be the first of a slimmed down American Athletic Conference. Two teams AAC Goalkeeper of the Week that competed in AAC men’s soccer last season have departed for different reasons. Eoin Gawronski, 3/8/21 Cincinnati has discontinued it’s men’s soccer program due to budget cuts. Temple held Eoin Gawronski, 4/5/21 a 4-4-1 record against the Bearcats. RETURNING STRONG AAC Weekly Honor Roll Despite some losses, the Owls return a large portion of a strong 2019 roster. Among the Nickolas Hartmann, 2/8/21 Nickolas Hartmann, 2/15/21 returning letterwinners is the 2020-21 AAC preseason defensive player of year, Pierre Pierre Cayet, 2/24/21 Cayet. The French defender shared the team lead in goals last season (3), as well as Nickolas Hartmann, 2/24/21 earning Second Team All-AAC, and Third Team All-Region honors. INTERNATIONAL OWLS First Team All-Conference The Cherry and White bring an exceptional amount of international flavor to the roster this Pierre Cayet Sean Karani season. There are 13 Owls on the team with international origins. This is two more than the 11 that were on the roster last season and ranks as the second most international players Second Team All-Conference on any AAC roster behind UCF (18). Brian Rowland was named the Temple men’s soccer head coach in December 2017. Prior to Temple, he spent the last eight seasons on the University of Maryland’s men’s soccer staff with the final three campaigns as the Terps’ associate head coach. Rowland had a statement inaugural season at the helm of the Temple men’s soccer program during the fall of 2018. Under his direction, the Owls shined as a fresh program with a 17-man roster change and an entirely new coaching staff from the year prior. The squad displayed its abilities from the gate, as Rowland saw his first victory as head coach in a 1-0 overtime win over the nationally ranked Old Dominion Monarchs in early September. The young, talented group also dished out one of the biggest upsets of the year when they handed the nationally recognized UCF Knights one of just three losses on the season. Rowland coached three student-athletes to post-season accolades from the American in Lukas Fernandes (Second-Team All-AAC), Jalen Campbell (All-Rookie) and Andres Charles (All-Rookie). Under the guidance of Rowland, Maryland captured five consecutive conference tournament crowns between 2012 and 2016, including three-straight as a member of the Big Ten Conference. Rowland has also excelled as a recruiter, helping the Terps bring home top classes on a yearly basis. The 2017 season saw Maryland start the season 10-0-3 and complete a 30-game regular season unbeaten streak that began in 2015. The Terps boasted the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year Eryk Williamson and first-team All-Big Ten selection Jake Rozhansky. Rowland helped the development of first-year keeper Dayne St. Clair, who was outstanding in his first season as a starter. In 2016, Rowland helped mentor a league-best eight all-conference selections, including Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Gordon Wild, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Alex Crognale and Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year Cody Niedermeier. Maryland set a program-record for consecutive wins (15) and accomplished an unbeaten regular season (16-0-2). The Terps also garnered the top seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps once again captured the Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2015, defeating top-seeded Ohio State in Columbus. Maryland also made a valiant return to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament after topping previous national champions Virginia and Notre Dame. Six Terps earned all-conference accolades and Tsubasa Endoh (first round) and Ivan Magalhaes (second round) were selected in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. Prior to serving as associate head coach, Rowland was tabbed as the recruiting coordinator in 2014, helping to insure the No. 1 rated class in 2015 and No. 2 class in 2016. Rowland helped guide the Terps to three consecutive regular season and tournament conference championships in 2012, 2013 and 2014 as Maryland advanced to the College Cup in consecutive seasons in 2012-13 for the first time since the 2004 and 2005 seasons. During his first season in College Park, Rowland coached All-America selection Zac MacMath, who led the nation with a 0.64 goals against average. MacMath was later selected by the Philadelphia Union with the fifth pick overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. During his undergraduate career, Rowland was a four-year starter for nationally-ranked UMBC and was a two-time captain for the Retrievers. He was tabbed UMBC Male Athlete of the Year, earned All-America honors in 2002, and garnered all-conference accolades twice in his illustrious career. Rowland left UMBC as the career and single-season record-holder in shutouts and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2014. Following Rowland’s successful collegiate tenure, he continued his playing career with the Toronto Lynx of the USL (2003-04), the Baltimore Blast and Milwaukee Wave of the MISL (2003-07) and finally with Crystal Palace USA of the USL from 2007 to 2009. He was tabbed to MISL’s Team of the Week three times and the USL Team of the Week five times. He also spent the last four years as the goalkeeper coach for Crystal Palace, working with academy goalkeepers in a year-round training program. Prior to landing at UMBC, Rowland competed on the Canadian Youth National U-20 team and trialed at Manchester United and Fulham. Rowland is a native of Toronto, Ontario and earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from UMBC in 2003. Rowland holds a USSF A License (2012) and is involved with US Soccer as a scout for their Youth National Teams.
