J/Orient/03 03.10.10 10:55 AM ページ 94 A History of Women in Japanese Buddhism: Nichiren’s Perspectives on the Enlightenment of Women Toshie Kurihara OVERVIEW HE Buddhist thinker and reformer Nichiren (1222–1282) is consid- Tered among the most progressive of the founders of Kamakura Bud- dhism, in that he consistently championed the capacity of women to achieve salvation throughout his ecclesiastic writings.1 This paper will examine Nichiren’s perspectives on women, shaped through his inter- pretation of the 28-chapter Lotus Sutra of Gautama Shakyamuni in India, a version of the scripture translated by Buddhist scholar Kumara- jiva from Sanskrit to Chinese in 406. The paper’s focus is twofold: First, to review doctrinal issues concerning the spiritual potential of women to attain enlightenment and Nichiren’s treatises on these issues, which he posited contrary to the prevailing social and religious norms of medieval Japan. And second, to survey the practical solutions that Nichiren, given the social context of his time, offered to the personal challenges that his women followers confronted in everyday life. THE ATTAINMENT OF BUDDHAHOOD BY WOMEN Historical Relationship of Women and Japanese Buddhism During the Middle Ages, Buddhism in Japan underwent a significant transformation. The new Buddhism movement, predicated on simpler, less esoteric religious practices (igyo-do), gained widespread acceptance among the general populace. It also redefined the roles that women occupied in Buddhism. The relationship between established Buddhist schools and women was among the first to change. It is generally acknowledged that the first three individuals in Japan to renounce the world and devote their lives to Buddhist practice were women. -

Bowing-in at the Green Gulch Greengrocer IMPORTANT NEWS AND CHANGES In April of this year, Zen Center's Abbot, Richard Baker-roshi, began an indefinite leave of absence. The precipitating event which brought this about was his relation ship with a married resident woman student, and the upset which this caused for those principally involved, and for others in the community who knew about it. Although we have never been primarily a traditional celibate monastic community, we have clearly established guidelines for the conduct of intimate relationships: no deceiving, no harming of anyone or their practice, and, if one is a practice leader, set ting a good example for others. Because the matter involved the Abbot, and because he had been involved in similar situations before, the Board of Directors convened to 2 discuss this situation and an appropriate response. The Board's first decision was to inform each scudenc personally and individually so that everyone would have the same information. Then, afcer several more days of community response and discus sion, the Board and Baker-roshi agreed on an indefinite leave of absence, to be reviewed in one year, in April, 1984. These evencs brought up for examination many fundamental issues for our Buddhist community: the student-reacher relationship in Zen, the nature and limits of spiritual authority, the way information is shared and the way we communicate with one another, and the way men and women relate to each ocher in spiritual practice. -
Zen Is a Form of Buddhism That Developed First in China Around the Sixth Century CE and Then Spread from China to Korea, Vietnam and Japan
Zen Zen is a form of Buddhism that developed first in China around the sixth century CE and then spread from China to Korea, Vietnam and Japan. The term Zen is just the Japanese way of saying the Chinese word Chan ( 禪 ), which is the Chinese translation of the Sanskrit word Dhyāna (Jhāna in Pali), which means "meditation." In the image above one sees on the left the character 禪 in Japanese calligraphy and on the right an ensō, or Zen circle. In Japan the drawing of such a circle is considered a high art, the expression of a moment of enlightenment by the Zen master calligrapher. The tradition known as Chan Buddhism in China, and Zen Buddhism in Japan, brings together Mahāyāna Buddhism and Daoism. This confluence of Buddhism and Daoism in Zen is most obvious in the Chinese script on the left which reads: "The heart-mind (xin 心) is the buddha (佛), the buddha (佛) is the path (dao 道), the path (dao 道) is meditation (chan 禪)." The line is from a text called the Bloodstream Sermon attributed to the legendary Bodhidharma. An Indian meditation master, Bodhidharma had come to China around 520 CE and in time would come to be regarded as the first patriarch of Chan Buddhism. In Bodhidharma’s Bloodstream Introduction to Asian Philosophy Zen Buddhism Sermon (in the Chan Buddhism online selections) it is evident that Bodhidharma had absorbed something of Daoism after he came to China. The Mahāyāna Buddhist teachings that are most evident in Bodhidharma’s text are the teachings of emptiness (Śūnyatā) from the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras as well as the notion of the buddha-nature (dharmakāya) that is part of the Mahāyāna teaching of the three bodies (trikāya) of the Buddha. -

Berkeley Zen Center July‒August 2021 Newsletter BZC Sangha Weighs in on Reopening You may remember filling out a questionnaire BZC SCHEDULE about BZC practice after Covid—asking how you felt about participating online, in-person, or a hybrid of both, once we reopen. We were July gratified to hear from 82 sangha members, and your responses are shaping our planning for Zendo Holiday Monday, 7/5 the coming months. This is a snapshot of what we learned: Zazenkai (Just Sitting Day) Sunday, 7/11 A large proportion of the sangha (84%) expect to continue practicing on Zoom “at least Board Meeting sometimes.” The reasons vary: ten percent of Sunday, 7/18 our sangha live too far away to attend in person; ten percent are still concerned about August Covid, regardless of precautions, or are unable to get vaccinated; a whopping 55% indicated One-Day Sesshin Saturday, 8/7 that the convenience of being able to practice at home was a significant factor. They listed a Board Meeting Sunday, 8/15 variety of reasons: not having to deal with traffic; greater ease in tending family; not having to find parking or to make frequent long commutes. It's very dark End Practice Period out there and I think you'll need some light to Weds-Sunday, 6-20 to 6-24 find your way." So he took a paper lantern, lit it Shuso Hossen and handed it to Deshan. As soon as Deshan Sunday, 6-24 took the candle, Lung-tan went "Whoo!" and July blew out the light, and the entire world was pitch Half-Day Sitting dark. -

Engaged Shin Buddhism Alfred Bloom Emeritus Professor University of Hawaii Introduction In the 21st century many social and political issues are coming to a head culminating in violent conflicts between and within nations. We need not enumerate all the problems here. For Buddhists, the problem is to find a voice to respond with some degree of unity to those issues. Unlike many other religious institutions in the West, Buddhism does not have a central authority to speak for all Buddhists. Perhaps that is not even desirable. Individual organizations such as Shin Buddhism does have a central organization in Japan and in the areas beyond Japan it is the largest and well-organized Buddhist community. Nevertheless, it has not been able to speak with a strong voice, despite the verse in the Juseige (Verses on Weighty Vows), chanted frequently in temples, that the community would open the Dharma treasury universally within the world and always being among the masses, speak with a lion’s voice. Other Buddhist groups are compsed of small local fellowship focused on the practice of their tradition. The Tibetans achieve a degree of unity through the activities of the Dalai Lama. However, the Buddhist voice does not have a real focus with American society, particularly. The reason, in part, for this lack of a social voice, is that during the long history of Buddhism, over 2600 years, it has endured many forms of despotism and political or government control. Only now in the West Buddhism has the freedom to speak out but it has not been prepared to do so. -

I wanted stop sitting, we stop sitting. We do the morning it that way and I need it to be that way to maintain service and eat. After eating, we do morning chores. my monastic practice. I no longer live in a temple. I After chores, we have a tea break, chosan; then live with a wife and two children ± it is different. My work, then noon service; then meal, then rest, then training was twelve years of monastic practice in back to work; then afternoon tea and afternoon Japan. I practised in three monasteries. The longest I service; then supper and evening sitting. It is very stayed in a monastery was for seven-and-a-half routine. years, the last one I stayed in was for two years. So if , GRQ¶W SURYLGH P\VHOI ZLWK WKDW VWUXFWXUH EHFDXVH , am married and have children, and if I resume the general kind of lay life, then I lose monastic practice. I become a fish out of water. I die (Ekai Osho laughs). It is interesting because when I moved from Japan to Melbourne, I was prepared to die. I knew nothing about Melbourne. I rented a garage for Jikishoan so I could survive, incubate in that space.
