For Immediate Release Dew Tour Day Five: a Full Day of Dew Tour Finals with Men's and Women's Street and Park Finals Concl FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DEW TOUR DAY FIVE: A FULL DAY OF DEW TOUR FINALS WITH MEN’S AND WOMEN’S STREET AND PARK FINALS CONCLUDED THE THE FIRST-EVER GLOBAL OLYMPIC QUALIFYING EVENT IN THE U.S. DOWNLOAD PHOTOS AND VIDEO FOR EDITORIAL USE (Long Beach, Calif.) June 16, 2019 -- It was an action-packed day of legendary skateboarding on the final day of Dew Tour and the first-ever global Olympic qualifying event in the U.S. for men’s and women’s skateboard street and park. While the morning began with overcast skies, the sun came out shining down on some of the sport’s most talented athletes, in time for them to take center stage during the four Final events. After beginning on Wednesday with more than 300 skaters representing 46 different countries, only 32 athletes remained today, ready to throw down their best runs for a chance to take the Dew Tour win and valuable points for the 2020 Olympic Games. Starting the day off was Women’s Street Finals, with the top eight from the week, set to go head-to-head. The skaters had two runs, plus five individual tricks, with their highest four scores counting. Taking a victory run on her final trick was 19-year-old Pamela Rosa (BRA), who had the highest total combined score of the day: a 21.40 out of possible 40.00. Rosa impressed the judges with tricks including a backside lipslide down the Boost Mobile rail, a frontside Smith grind down Boost Mobile rail and frontside nosegrind down the Hubba, securing the first place podium spot and back-to-back Dew Tour titles. “I am so stoked to win again,” said Rosa. “I can’t believe it. This is the best day and I am so happy I was able to land the tricks I wanted.” After pushing through an ankle injury, Leticia Bufoni (BRA) locked in a second place finish on her last trick, finishing with a 19.00, and Candy Jacobs (NED) finished up in third with a 17.90 with her first-ever Dew Tour podium. Up next, eight more ladies took to the Park Finals, showcasing their talents in a best-of-three-run format. After an incredible display of technical skating and pushing the boundaries of progression, 12-year-old Misugu Okamoto (JPN) finished in the top spot, with a run complete with McTwist in the deep of pool, kickflip body jar to score a 63.16. Though she only started skating four years ago, Okamoto is already looking like a definite one to watch on the path to Tokyo 2020. “It hasn’t hit me yet,” Okamoto said. “It doesn’t feel like I’m in the number one spot. I can’t believe it. I feel very lucky.” Second place honors went to Lizzie Armanto (FIN) with a 55.00, and third to Kokona Hiraki (JPN) with a 53.06. Mid-afternoon, the crowd packed the street course bleachers to watch the world’s best street skaters give it all they had in the Men’s Street Finals. The heavy lineup were one-upping each other throughout the event during their two 45-second timed runs, plus five individual trick attempts. Once their top four scores were tallied, Aurelien Giraud (FRA) was the one who couldn’t be beat. His top tricks included a hardflip frontside boardslide to fakie, backside 270 lipslide, half Cab nose 270 out, hardflip back 180, landing him the highest score of the day, a 35.40 out of 40.00. “I just love skateboarding so much,” said Giraud. “It was a fun course and a good day. I am so happy to win Dew Tour.” Rounding out the Street podium was Sora Shirai (JPN) with a 35.10, and Felipe Gustavo (BRA) going home with third, scoring a 33.90. Closing out the 2019 Dew Tour was the Men’s Park Final. With standing room crowds, eight athletes representing five countries took to the course for the best-of-three run format. After qualifying in first place in the Semi Final earlier in the week, Pedro Barros (BRA) was already sitting on the podium in the number two spot going into his final run. In the third run, he landed an even better score with an 84.00. Tricks included a massive 540 in deep end of park, an indy 540 and a switch disaster. “When I was a kid I saw a magazine that said skateboarding was going to be ‘the sport of the future,’” said Barros. “I feel like skateboarding is dominating the world. We have an opportunity as skateboarders, and being able to win here and possibly represent the sport in the Olympics, gets me excited to show the world what we do.” Coming in second was two-time Dew Tour Men’s Park champion, Cory Juneau (USA) with an 81.00 and Keegan Palmer (AUS) finished third, with a 75.00. Skateboarding enters the 2021 Olympic Games As an athletic and artistic endeavor, skateboarding is about to make its debut in the 2021 Olympics. Sky Brown, just turned 13 years old, representing Great Britain There have been world competitions and international skater rankings since 2010. Skateboarding entering the Olympics this year is a big deal. 1. Why might skateboarding not have been included in the Olympics until now? 2. What other sport (with similar moves) are skateboarders often good at? 3. Do you skateboard? (If you do, please help your class with any details that need clarifying in these discussions.) At the Olympics we will see two styles of skateboarding: Street Skateboarding - July 25 and 26, 2021 Athletes complete two runs and five tricks. A trick is executed like a run but only involves a single trick Five judges will evaluate the runs and tricks on a 0 to10-point scale for each run or trick. The highest and lowest scores for each run or trick are dropped, and the remaining three scores are averaged to give a score for each run and trick. The best four scores from runs or tricks will be added to give the total round score. Leticia Bufoni, photo by Kenji Haruta 4. Suppose a street skateboarder earned these 5 scores for a run from the 5 judges: 10.0, 8.4, 8.0, 9.4, and 7.5. Which 3 scores will be averaged? 5. What will be their final score for the run? 6. Suppose that the final scores for all 7 scores (2 runs and 5 tricks) are as follows: 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 8.2, 7.5, and 7.9.
