ABOUT THE FESTIVAL (Legend/History/Myth)

Vishu is one of the most important festivals celebrated at the Thirunelli Temple. The temple is believed to have been built by Lord . Once Lord Brahma saw an idol of Lord resting on a gooseberry or Nellikka tree in the valley and thus the place came to be known as Thirunelli. It is believed that Sri and his brother Lakshmana performed the Pithrukarma (rituals for a deceased person so that the soul attains liberation) of their father King Dasaratha standing on a rock at this temple.
