HERTFORDSHIRE CONSTABULARY

If you were lucky enough to receive a new mobile, television, sat nav or bike for Christmas, or have bought a new gadget in the January sales, have you registered it for free on http://www.immobilise.com/ yet?

Every year police recover hundreds of valuables that cannot be traced to their rightful owners. However, registering possessions on http://www.immobilise.com/ can help.

It is a free database where people can list their property and then, if the item is lost or stolen, users can log this on the system to help any recovered items be returned to them.

It can also serve as a deterrent to thieves, who won't want to be caught carrying property that is easily identified as not belonging to them by police, and can help police to identify suspects as part of their investigations.

Combined with simple crime prevention, this can help you to keep your valuable possessions secure. For tips on security, please visit http://www.herts.police.uk/advice/crime_prevention.aspx .

Christmas is over and done with and Easter Eggs are beginning to be seen on supermarket shelves. In the Church we don’t completely finish with Christmas until the end of January when we celebrate the Presentation of the Baby Jesus in the Temple at Jerusalem. This is also known as Candlemas.

At the beginning of February the hangings in the church and clergy vestments change to green as we start what is called Ordinary Time and we begin to prepare for Lent. Ash Wednesday, the day after Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday to the posh amongst us), falls on 22 nd February. This is the first day of Lent and we mark it with a special service of Holy Communion in the Evening where worshippers have a cross marked on their foreheads with ashes. The ashes are made by burning last year’s Palm Crosses from Palm Sunday. They are cooled down and mixed with water so nobody gets burnt.

Christians observe Lent as a period of self denial. Traditionally no luxury foods were eaten after they had all been used up on Shrove Tuesday. Many Christians today give up some luxury and perhaps donate what they would spend to charity. It is also a time for reflection and study and we shall be holding two study groups each week that will follow a course prepared by the diocese. Detail of these for High Wych are given below. If you would like to join with us please contact the host by phone or in church.

The other thing we are beginning to think about is preparing people for Confirmation. Confirmation is the completion of what started when we were baptised. It involves attending a preparation course which lasts for about ten weeks. At the Confirmation service, which is led by the Bishop, the candidates say for themselves the promises that their parents and godparents made on their behalf when they were babies. The Bishop then lays his hands on their heads and prays for the Holy Spirit to confirm their faith in Christ. Those confirmed are then full adult members of the Church of and can receive Holy Communion.

If you have been baptised and want more details about Confirmation, please contact me at the Rectory (01279 726476) or in church and I can explain what is involved in more detail. If you have not been baptised and would like to discuss that possibility, again, give me a ring or talk to me in church.

And don’t eat too many pancakes.

Anthony Giles

Lent Groups will meet on: Tuesday Evenings at 7.30 at the Rectory from 28 th February. Contact Anthony Giles (vicar) on 726476. Wednesday Mornings 10.00 am at 6 Falcon Close. Contact Jan Dixon on 723557.

CANDLEMAS : FEBRUARY 2

Candlemas Day takes its name from the blessing of candles on this day for use in church throughout the coming year. It is the feast of the presentation of Christ in the Temple when Simeon hailed him, as ‘A light to lighten the Gentiles’. Christians used to light candles for Baby Jesus and Mother Mary and perhaps that is why in some areas today the snowdrops which are very much in evidence at this season are known as Candlemas Bells or Mary’s tapers. If Candlemas Day be fair and bright Winter will take another flight. If Candlemas Day be cloud and rain

FRIENDS OF GILSTON WITH EASTWICK CHURCHES

Notes of inaugural meeting held on Monday 21 st November at 8pm in the Village Hall at Gilston.

PCC Members Present - Rev Anthony Giles (Priest in Charge),Sarah Bagnall, Roger Burridge, Judith Denton, Rick George, Christine Law, Michael Shaw, Lois Smith. Apologies-Hazel Scorah Village Residents Present-Natalie Shaw Apologies-Pat Hannaford

Rev Anthony opened the meeting with prayer and welcomed all those present. He gave a background to the reason for creating the Friends of Gilston with Eastwick Churches ,and copies of the proposed constitution were distributed for consideration.

The only amendment raised was to remove the words “the virgin” from line three of the purpose of the constitution. This was agreed by all present. It was then proposed by Michael Shaw and seconded by Roger Burridge to accept the constitution document. This was agreed unanimously.

It was disappointing that only one village resident had attended, even though the background to the meeting had been advertised in the village magazine.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS As this group is to be independent of the PCC, it is not possible at this stage to make permanent appointments other than to the post of President, therefore Rev Anthony Giles, as Priest in charge ,would take up this role.

Until there are residents willing to take up the other positions, some interim appointments to positions were proposed by Sarah Bagnall and seconded by Rick George.

Chairman-Michael Shaw assisted by Natalie Shaw

Vice Chairman-Vacant (Michael Shaw agreed to approach Pat Hannaford with a view to taking up this role) Secretary-Lois Smith Treasurer-Vacant Other officers to be co-opted.

MEMBERSHIP FEES The fee to become a member of the Friends of Gilston with Eastwick Churches were set for the coming year at £12 per person. If a 100 club is created to raise funds, those who are members will only pay £4 per month and non members would pay £5.

SHROVE TUESDAY AND SHROVETIDE

Shrove Tuesday or Pancake day is the day before Lent begins. Eggs & fat were not eaten during Lent so they had to be used up and pancakes were the traditional way of doing this. It was often a time a great festivity before the fasting and penance during Lent.

Pancakes with lemon and sugar or honey 8oz flour 4 eggs 1pint milk little butter and salt.

Put the flour into a basin and make a well in the middle; gradually whisk or beat in the milk and eggs and when all the flour is mixed in, add the butter and salt. Leave to stand for ½ hour.

Use a little oil in frying pan and thinly spread the batter over the hot pan. Turn or toss and when the pancake is ready serve immediately.
