Thus two additional traffic lanes (each 3.5 m wide) and an emer- gency lane (2.5 m) will be built in the scope of the Phase 2B. Namely, last fifteen years showed very intense motorway construction in Croatia, and construction of tunnels as well, as their key elements. Since there are several motorway concessionaires in Croatia, different construction models and models of construction progress have been introduced, with great impact on tunnels. Some concessionaires built motorways in full profile, others introduced phased construction. Significant differences appeared during tunnel construction, depending on tunnel length, thus creating the following four main phased construction models for two-tube tunnels: HAC as Investor, built the A1 motorway (Split-Zagreb) in its full profile, as well as almost all tunnels on it. Only exception to this were long tunnels (Tunnels “Mala Kapela” and “Sveti Rok” – both longer than 5000 m). These were built in two phases, although the motorway was built in its full profile. ARZ as the Investor built the A6 motorway (Bosiljevo–Rijeka) in two phases as well as all tunnels on it. AZM as Investor, built the A2 motorway in its full profile, except 3,7 km long section where the “Sveta Tri Kralja” tunnel is located, which is going to be built in two phases. The only common factor to all concessionaires in Croatia is that all tunnels on Croatian motorways were built as two-tube tunnels for unidirectional traffic.

    Transport and Logistics in Croatia Belgian Trade Office C R O A T I A Zagreb, 2010 [TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS IN CROATIA] Zagreb, 2010 Executive Summary This research intends to show what the current position of Croatia is in terms of transport and logistics. As it is known, Croatia became independent in 1991, and since that time all its efforts have been focused in reconstructing the country. These efforts are most reflected in the level of development reached currently in all economic sectors. The transport sector counts for 8% of the total GDP of Croatia. There are three main branches: ground, water and air transport. They differ from each other in many aspects). Ground transportation has also two branches: road transport (cars, buses and public transportation) and railroad transport. The road transport is highly developed and almost all the roads meet the European Union Standards and safety measures. The roads are safe and reach all the parts of Croatia. Railroad sector is poorly developed and there are still huge infrastructure lacks. A lot of work can be done in this sector in order to reach better standards. Water transport is one of the most important activities in the country and one of the crucial activities in the general economy. Water transport includes sea ports, transport in river and pipelines. Croatia has 3 big main ports that are very important for foreign investment: Rijeka, Split and Ploče. Air transport is not much used, but good enough to meet the requirements of the country. Most visitors come with their own car of by railroad or bus.
