Biographical / Historical
The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company was formed on April 21, 1820 by the merger of the Lehigh Navigation Company and the Lehigh Coal Company. Both predecessor companies and the new company were organized by Josiah White, Erskine Hazard, and George F. Hauto. The LCNC was reorganized in 1821 and incorporated by the Pennsylvania legislature in 1822.
The company was involved in anthracite mining and transportation, initially, they made the Lehigh River navigable as a means of getting their coal to Easton and then to Philadelphia via the Delaware River. Later, through canal construction, railway construction and agreements with existing railroads, the company delivered its product to New York, New England, and elsewhere. In the 1820s, LCNC laid rails from its mines to the river landing at Mauch Chunk and also began its railroad from Summit Hill, in the late 1820s, construction of the Lehigh Canal was completed from Mauch Chunk to Easton. Between 1836 and 1838 the Lehigh and Susquehanna Railroad was completed from the northern anthracite field, connecting Wilkes Barre to White Haven.
In 1840, the first successful iron furnace blast was made with Lehigh coal, in 1844, the company began its first important underground mining. In the 1860s and 1870s, the company completed a railroad from Wilkes Barre to Easton, and the Lehigh and Susquehanna Railroad was leased to the Central Railroad of New Jersey, thereby guaranteeing LCNC access to New York. Early in the twentieth century, the New England area was opened to LCNC through railroad construction.
In 1930 the Lehigh Navigation Coal Company was founded essentially as a holding company for LCNC and other companies, and other organizational changes were made. The company went out of business in 1965.

Page 19 of 82 Series 8: Journals Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company Records NMAH.AC.0071
Series 8: Journals, 1874 - 1945 The series contains journal entries of the general ledger of LCNC. Included are monthly accounts of miscellaneous disbursements and disbursements for mining operations.
The accounts are recorded at Lansford, the location of the general office. Accounts are posted at the end of the month. Each entry includes the name and often the number of the account. Several of the volumes are either labeled as miscellaneous journals or mining operation journals. Double column accounting is used for all entries and, often an explanation of the spending is included with each entry in the miscellaneous journal.
The miscellaneous journals include entries for accounts such as sundries; Lansford supply store; hay, feed, and stable; pay rolls; coal mining; coal preparing; breakers; vouchers; mining expenses; Philadelphia Office; improvements; and coal sales. Starting in July 1907, the entries are numbered consecutively for each month. In volumes 1 through 4, each entry also has what appears to be a voucher number. Volume 1 of these journals is labeled Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Company.
The mining journals include entries for accounts such as sundries, a beneficial fund, colliery insurance premiums, supplies on hand, legal expenses, transportation, coal mining and preparation, pay rolls, office expenses, operation jobs, transfers, vouchers, and cost of coal production. The entries are generally numbered consecutively for each month. In the first several volumes of the mining journals, there are cumulative column totals at the bottom of most pages adding up to monthly totals, and a monthly net amount and cost per ton of coal.
These journals are arranged chronologically by year.

Series 16: Payroll Records, 1882 - 1951 This series consists of sixty-one volumes of general payroll records, 1901-1906. Additionally, there are two volumes documenting work on township roads, 1898-1906; five volumes recording work done at Lansford Shops, 1900-1905; and two volumes documenting contract work done at collieries, 1894-1907.
The general payroll records are by colliery number. With the exception of the payroll records for contract work, information in all volumes is recorded bimonthly, e.g. first half of June 1898, second half of June 1898. There are column totals at the bottom of each page, and a summary or recapitulation is given at the end of each bimonthly account.
The general payroll records and the payroll records for township roads and Lansford Shops give the name and occupation of each worker, time worked, rates, gross amount earned, amounts of individual deductions, total deductions, and net amount due each worker. Deductions were for items such as a beneficial fund, water rent, house rent, hauling, coal, the J.C. Bright Store, religious denominations, and taxes. The townships for which there are payroll records are Rahn, Blythe, Schuylkill, and East Norwegian, all in Schuylkill County, and Mauch Chunk in Carbon County.
The payroll information for contract work is reported by colliery number. Within each colliery listing, data is recorded in two-year time spans, e.g. 1894-1895, and gives workers' names in alphabetical order along with hours worked per month and daily earnings. At the end of each colliery report is information for selected years giving the number of men who worked per month and the average amount earned per day. In the back of each volume are combined colliery totals for selected years giving the number of men who worked per month and the average amount earned per day.
These payroll volumes are arranged by type and then chronologically.
