In the shift to digital formats, we lost physical artifacts but gained data as a rich, but often hidden artifact of our music listening. This project tracked and visualized the music listening habits of eight people over 30 days to explore how this data can serve as a visual representation of self and present new opportunities for reflection. 1 exploring music listening data as MUSIC NOTES a visual representation of self CHAD PHILIP HALL 2 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF: master of design university of washington 2016 COMMITTEE: kristine matthews karen cheng linda norlen PROGRAM AUTHORIZED TO OFFER DEGREE: school of art + art history + design, division -

The Life of Pablo Album Download Kanye Is Finally Giving People 'The Life of Pablo' Download They Paid For
the life of pablo album download Kanye Is Finally Giving People 'The Life of Pablo' Download They Paid For. Honestly, I'm feeling pretty TIDAL-ed out, and I think most of you are too. Believe me, I didn't want to spend the last two months covering the worst album release in music history. I would have much rather just written about The Life of Pablo as a collection of music and called it a day. But after TIDAL and Kanye West took hundreds of thousands of dollars from people who paid for a download of The Life of Pablo —either in the brief window it was available for downloadable purchase or as part of their live-stream ticket purchase—without actually delivering the album I felt like I had to help hold them accountable. It had nothing to do with Kanye as an artist or changing the idea of an album as a fixed collection of music and everything to do with not looking the other way while corporations and millionaire artists took ordinary's people's hard-earned money without giving them the product they paid for. "The latest version of The Life of Pablo is now being delivered to the individuals that purchased it originally, as well as to those who in some cases did not receive a download link at the time of the album's release. Customers that received a refund will also receive a download link as a courtesy from Tidal.com." —TIDAL spokesperson. Was that really so hard? People pay for something, you give them what they paid for, it's not a difficult concept. -

Report of the President Daniel Sher Dean, College of Music University of Colorado-Boulder
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS OF MUSIC 2006 Annual Meeting Report of the President Daniel Sher Dean, College of Music University of Colorado-Boulder Last year our annual meeting centered on the issues of developing a positive future for art music, and we are continuing the theme this year. I chose this subject for my Report to you today, partly because it is surely one of the major challenges we face, and partly because I was inspired by Sam Hope’s beautifully concise and comprehensive paper, “Creating a Positive Future for Art Music,” which I read as a call to arms. In fact, I asked the NASM staff to place another copy of it in your packet again this year with the idea that you may find guidance and inspiration in it, as I have. My train of thought went this way: First, I wondered whether there is any point to considering that there is a cumulative effect to the activities and advocacy each of us engage in at our local level. And then, it occurred to me how important it might be to consider whether our advocacy role depends upon our abil- ity to understand the critically important, but often nuanced differences between music’s intrinsic and extrinsic values. This latter point seems especially important now, given the complex and often over- whelmingly commercial environment for messaging, branding, and marketing in which we live. I’ll frame these two issues by asking two fundamental questions: First, “What is our message?” Second, “How do we best advance it?” Given the challenges in messaging I referred to a moment ago, it seems essential that, first and foremost, we try our best to understand what comprises music’s intrinsic values, so as not to confuse them with extrinsic ones. -
Gray Area: Thinking with a Damaged Brain
LOST Magazine - Gray Area: Thinking With a Damaged Brain by Floyd Skloot My entire brain, the organ by which my very consciousness is controlled, was reorganized one day ten years ago. I went to sleep here and woke up there; the place looked the same but nothing in it worked the way it used to. I used to be able to think. My brain's circuits were all connected and I had spark, a quickness of mind that let me function well in the world. There were no problems with numbers or abstract reasoning; I could find the right word, could hold a thought in mind, match faces with names, converse coherently in crowded hallways, learn new tasks. I had a memory and an intuition that I could trust. All that changed on December 7, 1988, when I contracted a virus that targeted my brain. A decade later, my cane and odd gait are the most visible evidence of damage. But most of the damage is hidden. My cerebral cortex, the gray matter that M.I.T. neuroscientist Steven Pinker likens to "a large sheet of two- dimensional tissue that has been wadded up to fit inside the spherical skull," has been riddled with tiny perforations. This sheet and the thinking it governs are now porous. Invisible to the naked eye, but readily seen through brain imaging technology, are areas of scar tissue that constrict blood flow. Anatomic holes, the lesions in my gray matter, appear as a scatter of white spots like bubbles or a ghostly pattern of potshots. -

For thirty days, we honor the great poets of our past by spotlighting new and promising works and encouraging everyone (and anyone) to connect with their inner poet. This year, the CALS Writing Circle hosted a month-long challenge. For every day in the month of April, a new prompt in the form of a single word was given to our writers--words like wake, spark, thaw, clear. When we sat down to plan the challenge, we set a few goals. We agreed that if April came to an end and we had at least fifteen poems, we would consider the contest a success. The days ticked by, but our inboxes never came up empty; every morning there were new poems to be read. -
Sweet Sexy Savage Deluxe Edition Kehlani Album Download Sweetsexysavage [Deluxe] Kehlani's You Should Be Here Struck Some Surprise Blows
sweet sexy savage deluxe edition kehlani album download SweetSexySavage [Deluxe] Kehlani's You Should Be Here struck some surprise blows. Their second self-issued mixtape went Top Five R&B/hip-hop, cracked the Top 40, and was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Urban Contemporary Album. Their proper full-length debut, SweetSexySavage, followed its release by almost two years. While it was in the works, anticipation was built with a clutch of tracks, including a streak of three that charted. The appealingly scruffy and scrappy "CRZY," recorded with up-and-coming duo Denisia Andrews and Brittany Coney, became Kehlani's first commercial hit back in July 2016. Shortly thereafter, the Pop & Oak collaboration "Distraction," a sweet midtempo number regarding a no-strings fling, evoked prime Missy Elliott and Timbaland -- and faintly echoed forebears Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis -- with harmonies that hit as hard as its booming bass. Biggest of all was the Suicide Squad soundtrack's "Gangsta" -- a melodramatic trap-pop ballad that, like many a Skylar Grey co-composition, went down a storm at teen-oriented mall outlets offering counterculture apparel. That song ends this album's deluxe edition. The two preceding singles are on the standard version and more accurately forecast the album's lustrous pop-R&B framing of Kehlani's "I contain multitudes" character. The lows and highs, grief and pleasure, and insecurity and pride are all put on vivid display, and Kehlani pours themself into all of it without overselling a thought. What they and some of their collaborators put forth most strikingly is an aptitude for evoking 1994-1998 contemporary R&B -- not just TLC, whose second album also inspired the album's title, but Brandy and Aaliyah as well - - without sounding like a nostalgia act. -

Escaping Eden
Escaping Eden Chapter 1 I wake up screaming. Where am I? What’s going on? Why do I feel so cold? It’s dark. I look around, blinking sleep from my eyes. I notice a window somewhere in the back of the room. It’s open and moonlight shines through, casting a square beam of light across the floor. A breeze drifts in, and white curtains float like pale ghosts in the darkness. In the narrow light of the moon, I see that the carpet is burgundy. I also see the outlines of furniture. My head vaguely aching, I look at the shadows scattered messily across the room. I feel like sweeping them up to make room for light. I shake off the urge. Stop being delusional. There’s a funny smell in the air, like a mixture of old home mustiness and laboratory sterilization. I realize that I’m lying on the floor. Why am I not on the bed? The last thing I remember is pain. Maybe that’s why I woke up screaming. The pain was intense. The pain was… cold. I decide to swallow my fear. It tastes terrible. I stand up and my neck aches. As I rub my hand across it, my bones crack like I haven’t moved in a long time. I whisper to myself. “As Grandpa always said…” My train of thought rolls off into the distance. Where was I going with this? Who is “Grandpa”? I put my hand on my sweaty forehead. I must be tired. I look for a light switch by approaching the walls and groping around.
