Flanqué de Sancho, Don Quichotte arrive alors, à cheval, à son tour acclamé par la foule qui loue sa grandeur d'âme et sa bonté. Heureux de cet accueil. Don Qui- chotte distribue aux mendiants, qui se pressent, tout l'argent destiné à leur propre souper. Les vivats redoublent... Deuxième Tableau Une place devant la maison de Dulcinée Peu à peu la place se vide avec le crépuscule. La nuit tombe doucement, et Don Quichotte, avisant la maison de Dulcinée, laisse Sancho rejoindre l'auberge, et reste seul pour chanter une tendre sérénade à la Dame de ses pensées, ce qui provoque la jalousie et la raillerie de Juan, l'amant en ntre de la belle. Réagissant aussitôt à l'offense. Don Quichotte dre son épée mais, avant de se battre, tient à terminer sa sérénade... puis il se met en garde ! Dulcinée, accourue, sépare les épées d'un coup d'éventail et calme les sangs, tant de son soupirant enfiévré, que de son amant jaloux, en les assurant tous deux, alternati- vement, de son intérêt. Puis, demeurée seule avec Don Quichotte, elle est amusée par la ferveur et la iassion du Chevalier et consent à devenir l'objet de son adoradon, à condition qu'il lui apporte le col- ler qui lui a été volé, la veille, par un bandit. Don Quichotte s'y engage, bien sûr, et Dulcinée s'éloigne pour aller retrouver ses amis, laissant le Chevalier palpitant d'espoir. Troisième Tableau Les Moulins Un léger brouillard baigne l'aurore. Don Quichotte, tout en chevauchant, toujours accompagné de Sancho, compose un nouveau poème en l'honneur de Dulcinée, le cœur tout étoilé d'amour. Sancho, exaspéré, tente de lui ouvrir les yeux sur la vraie nature des femmes, pour lesquelles il n'a pas de mots assez durs pour dire la duplicité. Mais Don Quichotte n'a cure de ce discours : il vient d'aviser un ennemi terrible qui bat des ailes pour tenter, sans doute, de l'arrêter ! Sans hésiter, il tire son épée et s'avance vers le premier de ces géants qui lui barrent le chemin. Sancho a beau lui clamer, qu'en fait de géants, c'est à un moulin auquel il s'attaque, le Chevalier ne l'écoute pas et charge aux cris de sa Dulci- née "pour toi, ma Dame de Beauté"... jusqu'à se retrouver accroché par le fond de son haut-de-chaus- ses à une aUe du moulin et voltigeant en l'air... Quatrième Tableau Les Brigands Don Quichotte est toujours sur les traces des brigands qui ont dérobé à Dulcinée son collier. Il lui sem- ble qu'ils s'approchent de leur repaire... Sancho, guère rassuré, tente de convaincre son maître de s'ar- rêter un moment... mais il n'est plus temps : voilà les brigands. Sancho, terrifié, se sauve, tandis que Don Quichotte, bravement, les attaque, mais succombe sous le nombre, et se trouve bientôt solide- ment ligoté devant le chef des bandits qui rend hommage à son audace et l'interroge. Mais le Chevalier ne répond que par un mépris hautain. Les bandits décident de le mettre à mort, mais cette perspective même semble le laisser serein, au grand étonnement des bandits, de plus en plus impressionnés par sa hauteur d'âme. Le chef, ému, le presse alors de dire qui il est. Se redressant. Don Quichotte explique que, chevalier errant, il est le redresseur de tons qui se place aux côtés de ceux que le sort n'a pas aimés, et qu'il faut à l'instant lui rendre le col- lier de Dulcinée ! Tremblants d'émotion devant le caractère sacré de cette injonction, les bandits ren- dent le collier et s'agenouillent, demandant la bénédiction de Don Quichotte qu'ils regardent comme une manière de prophète. Le Chevalier, radieux, étend les mains sur eux. ENTR'ACTE ACTE II Cinquième Tableau C'est la fête chez Dulcinée On danse les galants entourent la Belle qui demeure rêveuse et mélancolique. Elle souhaiterait parfois éprouver des frtssons inconnus et se lasse des éternels serments d'amour des Juan et autre Rodriguez. Mais il faut chasser cette ombre : elle se met à danser, avant de passer dans la salle où est dressée la table du souper... C'est alors qu'arrivent Don Quichotte et Sancho. Ce dernier se plaint un peu des rêves de Mn maître, qui ne lut apportent guère à manger, mais celui-ci le rassure : dès son mariage célébré avec Dulcmée, il lui promet la richesse... Mais voici les invités qui reviennent, et Dulcinée parmi eux. Le Chevalier est saisi d'une profonde éitio- tion. Quand il tend à la Belle son fameux collier, celle-ci, folle de joie, lui saute au cou et l'embrasse. Don Quichotte, comme illuminé de bonheur, lui fait alors sa demande en mariage. Hélas, tous s'esclaf- fent, et Dulcinée la première. Don Quichotte est désespéré. Eloignant la foule. Dulcinée comprend qu'il faut décidément ouvrir les yeux du Chevalier sur la femme Qu'elle est réellement. Mais en lui ôtant ses illusions. Dulcinée lui brise le cœur et en est sincèrement et doiiloureusement émue. Le monde s'effondre autour de ce grand corps vaincu par un seul mot. Les invités reviennent et reprennent leurs moqueries à l'endroit de Don Quichotte qu'ils traitent de fou... Sancho, pour une fois grand, fait face crânement et dit leur fait à tous ces seigneurs sans idéal qui ne valent pas une parcelle de l'âme de son maître, de son ami, qu'il entraîne avec lui... Sixième Tableau C'est la nuit au milieu de la forêt Don Quichotte se meurt, mais se meurt debout, adossé à un grand chêne. Sancho tente de le réconfor- ter d'un feu, de sa veste, d'une prière. Le Chevalier, se réveillant, s'appuie sur son fidèle et lui fait alors des adieux déchirants, avec quelque chose de fier, en même temps qu'empreint d'une infmie douceur, d'une profonde tendresse même. Puis, lui rappelant l'île qu'il lui avait promise au cours de leurs péré- grmations, il lui lègue celle dont un flot azuré baigne les grèves : l'Ile des Rêves. Et, entendant encore une fois, au loin, dans les brumes du délire peut-être, la voix de Dulcinée, il meurt, l'âme pure, grande. On ne pouvait regarder sans rire ce pauvre chevalier. A PROPOS DE DON QUICHOTTE Quelques mots pour la mise en scène. Vladimii" Nabokov, dans la remarquable étude qu'il a consacrée à l'œuvre de Cervantès, écrit : "Finale- ment, Don Quichotte est plus grand aujourd'hui qu'O ne l'était dans l'esprit de Cervantès. Il a par- couru pendant trois cent cinquante ans les jungles et les toundras de la pensée humaine et il a gagné en vitalité et en stature. Nous ne rions plus de lui. Il a la pitié pour blason et la beauté pour bannière. Il incarne tout ce qui est douceur, délaissement, pureté, altruisme et chevaleresque. La parodie est deve- nue parangon". Massenet, avec son libretriste Henri Caïn, aura été l'un de ceux qui auront participé à cette transforma- tion du personnage. Alors que, chez Cervantès, toute l'œuvre est structurée par les combats gagnés ou perdus contre les forces qui s'opposent à lui, ici, le seul et vrai combat, c'est de gagner l'amour de Dul- cinée et, pour elle, "ce vagabond inondé de tendresse" panira en quête d'un collier, soumettra une troupe de brigands par la seule force de sa parole et de son chant. Quête inutile, puisque Dulcinée lui refusera son amour, le condamnant à la mort. Mais cette mort ne sauvera pas l'âme de la pécheresse. Don Quichotte meurt, et sa mort est le signe de sa défaite et de son échec.

For those of us that work on French music during the nineteenth century, this book is a collection of essays that exemplifies what we do and yet it is far from banal. We ‘insiders’ tend to forget the honest and engaging nature of such work, studying and examining not only musical artefacts, but the aesthetic, cultural and institutional history which shaped those artworks and in turn forged the nature of our discipline. Annegret Fauser and Mark Everist, both at the height of their games, have given us a book which those in many other fields of musicological study may envy in its scope and integrity. Indeed, this book has already won the coveted Solie prize, awarded by the American Musicological Society, and I would not be surprised if it went on to win more. But as the editors-authors are quick to point out, this volume grew out of the international symposium, “The Institutions of Opera in Paris from the July Revolution to the Dreyfus Affair”, co-organised by Annegret Fauser and the late and much regretted Elizabeth C. Bartlett, and the book is both a tribute to the current discipline and to Beth Bartlett’s place within its development.

    jules massenet : thérèse Massenet and opera: richness and diversity Jean-Christophe Branger Massenet (184 2- 1912) is known above all for two works, Manon and Werther , and to these have been added another four: Hérodiade , Thaïs , Don Quichotte and Cendrillon , which are now enjoying renewed popularity. However, his output was much larger than that: twenty-five complete operatic works have come down to us (not counting Marie-Magdeleine , an oratorio written in 1873 and staged in 1903). But his output has been large - ly neglected because of its singularity: few people realise that Massenet experimented with opera far more than most other composers, thus cre - ating a multi-faceted world all of his own. It was in Massenet’s temperament, no doubt, to feel a constant need for change and renewal, diversity and challenge, and he was generally encouraged in that direction by his publishers and librettists and those close to him. In 1896 he told the periodical Le Temp s: You will notice [...] that my works are taken from very diverse sources. I try to vary their subjects. Manon came after Hérodiade , Esclarmonde fol - lowed Le Cid . I tear myself away from one world to immerse myself imme - diately in another one that is very different, in order to change the course of my ideas. That is the best way to avoid monotony. Massenet thus approached every genre and every register. While Le Roi de Lahore (1877), Hérodiade (1881), Le Cid (1885) and Le Mage (1891) are 40 unquestionably grand operas à la Meyerbeer (including the inevitable bal - let), Ariane (1906), Bacchus (1909), Roma (1912) and Cléopâtre (posthu - mous, 1914) belong rather to an important neo-Gluckist movement, showing a keen interest in Greek and Roman antiquity.

In Cendrillon, Massenet writes leading roles for three mezzo soprano voices: Le Prince Charmant, Madame de la Haltière, Cendrillon (and one featured supporting role, the step- sister Dorothée). The three leading roles involve different vocal and dramatic demands, while still allowing the unique colors of the mezzo soprano voice to shine. I will explore Massenet’s writing for the mezzo soprano and the interaction of the vocal line with the orchestra, in his “fairy tale” opera, Cendrillon. I will analyze scenes that deal with the role of title character Cendrillon and the specific vocal qualities that Massenet highlights in each: Cendrillon’s arias in Act I and Act III; the scene with La Feé in Act I; the duet with the Prince Charmant in Act II; and the duet / trio with Prince Charmant and La Feé that ends Act III.

Mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot’s (1821–1910) diva status provided her with a platform from which to share the full extent of her musical abilities. Viardot’s capabilities as a performer are widely acknowledged and reviewed throughout history; however, her contributions to French music beyond simply singing are only beginning to be understood. Her Thursday night salon promoted the music of both established and unknown composers, and hosted important guests, including Alfred de Musset, George Sand, Charles Dickens, Charles Gounod, Frédéric Chopin, and Franz Liszt. Viardot’s musical talents were respected and utilized in the premieres of Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Le prophète (1849) , Charles Gounod’s Sapho (1851) , and Hector Berlioz’s revision of Gluck’s Orphée (1859) . Through her salon and collaboration with composers, Viardot shaped the careers of others, contributing in a broader sense to the trajectory of French music of the nineteenth century.

    JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works By Nick Fuller I. Introduction Jules Massenet’s operas made him one of the most popular composers of the late nineteenth century, his works performed throughout Europe, the Americas and North Africa. After World War I, he was seen as old- fashioned, and nearly all of his operas, apart from Werther and Manon , vanished from the mainstream repertoire. The opera-going public still know Massenet best for Manon , Werther , and the Méditation from Thaïs , but to believe, as The Grove Dictionary of Opera wrote in 1954, that ‘to have heard Manon is to have heard all of him’ is to do the composer a gross disservice. Massenet wrote twenty-seven operas, many of which are at least as good as Manon and Werther . Nearly all are theatrically effective, boast beautiful music and display insightful characterisation and an instinct for dramatic and psychological truth. In recent decades, Massenet’s work has regained popularity. Conductors like Richard Bonynge, Julius Rudel and Patrick Fournillier have championed Massenet, while since 1990 a biennial Massenet festival has been held in his birthplace, Saint-Étienne, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, its mission to rediscover Massenet’s operas. His work has been performed in the world’s major opera houses under the baton of conductors Thomas Beecham, Colin Davis, Charles Mackerras, Michel Plasson, Riccardo Chailly and Antonio Pappano, and sung by Joan Sutherland, José van Dam, Frederica von Stade, Nicolai Gedda, Roberto Alagna, Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Plácido Domingo.

Although individual works were rarely outright successes in critical terms during his lifetime, Massenet’s operas always stimulated debate and Massenet, as a figure head for a national art, was revered by both the state and its people. Drawing on theories of parody and readership, I argue that despite the ‘ephemeral’ nature of these musical artefacts, they acted as agents of commemora- tion of the composer and of memorialisation and commodification of his works for both operagoers and those who rarely entered the opera theatre.
