  • And Then One Night… the Making of DEAD MAN WALKING
And Then One Night… The Making of DEAD MAN WALKING Complete program transcript Prologue: Sister Helen and Joe Confession scene. SISTER HELEN I got an invitation to write to somebody on death row and then I walked with him to the electric chair on the night of April the fifth, 1984. And once your boat gets in those waters, then I became a witness. Louisiana TV footage of Sister Helen at Hope House NARRATION: “Dead Man Walking” follows the journey of a Louisiana nun, Sister Helen Prejean, to the heart of the death penalty controversy. We see Sister Helen visiting with prisoners at Angola. NARRATION: Her groundbreaking work with death row inmates inspired her to write a book she called “Dead Man Walking.” Her story inspired a powerful feature film… Clip of the film: Dead Man Walking NARRATION: …and now, an opera…. Clip from the opera “Dead Man Walking” SISTER HELEN I never dreamed I was going to get with death row inmates. I got involved with poor people and then learned there was a direct track from being poor in this country and going to prison and going to death row. NARRATION: As the opera began to take shape, the death penalty debate claimed center stage in the news. Gov. George Ryan, IL: I now favor a moratorium because I have grave concerns about our state’s shameful record of convicting innocent people and putting them on death row. Gov. George W. Bush, TX: I’ve been asked this question a lot ever since Governor Ryan declared a moratorium in Illinois.

H-France Review Volume 11 (2011) Page 1 H-France Review Vol. 11 (May 2011), No. 99 Annegret Fauser and Mark Everist eds., Music, Theater, and Cultural Transfer: Paris, 1830-1914. Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, 2009. x + 439 pp. Appendix, bibliography, discography and filmography, contributors, index. $55.00 U.S. (cl.) ISBN 978-0-226-23926-2 Review by Clair Rowden, Cardiff University. For those of us that work on French music during the nineteenth century, this book is a collection of essays that exemplifies what we do and yet it is far from banal. We ‘insiders’ tend to forget the honest and engaging nature of such work, studying and examining not only musical artefacts, but the aesthetic, cultural and institutional history which shaped those artworks and in turn forged the nature of our discipline. Annegret Fauser and Mark Everist, both at the height of their games, have given us a book which those in many other fields of musicological study may envy in its scope and integrity. Indeed, this book has already won the coveted Solie prize, awarded by the American Musicological Society, and I would not be surprised if it went on to win more. But as the editors-authors are quick to point out, this volume grew out of the international symposium, “The Institutions of Opera in Paris from the July Revolution to the Dreyfus Affair”, co-organised by Annegret Fauser and the late and much regretted Elizabeth C. Bartlett, and the book is both a tribute to the current discipline and to Beth Bartlett’s place within its development.

The Journey of Dead Man Walking I'm glad to be with you. I'm going to bring you with me on a journey, an incredible journey, really. I never thought I was going to get involved in these things, never thought I would accompany people on death row and witness the execution of five human beings, never thought I would be meeting with murder victims' families and accompanying them down the terrible trail of tears and grief and seeking of healing and wholeness, never thought I would encounter politicians, never thought I would be getting on airplanes and coming now for close to fourteen years to talk to people about the death penalty.

It was also, not coincidentally, ten years to the month in which I first encountered Sister Helen. I had represented Willie in seeking certiorari from the United States Supreme Court in late 1983 to review his conviction and sentence, which was all I had originally agreed to do on his behalf. But when I learned that if I did not continue to represent him, there would likely be no one to represent him in his first state post-conviction and federal habeas corpus proceedings, I felt I could not walk away.

  • Opera SAN JOSÉ
2018 | 2019 SEASON Opera SAN JOSÉ Celebrating 35 YEARS of Excellence Message from General Director Larry Hancock I suspect that it is impossible to say in few words what Melville’s Moby- Dick is about. It seems to be about everything. It may be doubtful that anyone can say precisely what any great work of literature is about. In Search of Lost Time, War and Peace, Middlemarch, Great Expectations, Moby-Dick…The words string along, leading into deeper knowledge page after page, clearer understanding character by character, so that after 800 pages of, say, Middlemarch, you put the book down and know…what? That humanity is…what? That life is lived… how? By whom? But you know you’ve learned something. The search for a more concise meaning is a bit easier after epic literature has been put in the crucible of opera and rendered. Opera, using music, with its layered emotions, penetrates instantaneously on many levels and at once. The sounding of a single chord can convey a whole page of description. Composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer have distilled Melville’s epic from 24 hours and 38 minutes (the duration of the audiobook) to three hours of music. Anything that is not essential to the narrative, and a great portion of Melville’s revolutionary novel is not narrative, has been set aside, and as a stage doesn’t provide scene changes by beginning new paragraphs, some words that were spoken in different times and other places have been moved into the here and now, and realizations in the novel that emerge only after long introspective monologues are expressed in a flash, expanded in meaning by an entire orchestra.

Libera me Tiffany Abban, soprano Katherine Lerner, mezzo-soprano William Davenport, tenor Wayne Tigges, bass-baritone Stuart Mindlin was a Princeton businessman who was also a superb percussionist and timpanist. When I arrived here in 1977 he was a member of PUO’s percussion section, and indeed in those days, sometimes he WAS the percussion section. With his special gifts for friendship, he became close to many generations of students, and was a mentor for student percussionists. In the spring of 1988 Stu did not show up to a rehearsal. We learned that he had lost his life in a traffic accident, and the shock and grief was deep for PUO. The next year we established the first memorial concerts in his name. His family began raising an endowment for PUO in his name, and it is with pride and gratitude that we also dedicate these end-of-the-year concerts to his memory. —M.P. ABOUT TONIGHT’S PROGRAM Verdi’s string quartet represented a radical departure from opera composition in every respect— instrumental rather than vocal, chamber rather than symphonic. Verdi’s Requiem is interesting In the context of Verdi’s career, his Requiem occupies a unique chronological space, falling for how it operates in a more indeterminate middle ground.
