SENER busy in Turkey, promoting the FORAN System

SENER is playing a big effort in Turkey, where it is promoting the FORAN System since many years. In particular, SENER has recently participated in two international events presenting a paper in each one, regarding important new enhancements in its shipbuilding CAD/CAM System FORAN.

This time in Istambul, the TEAM Conference that promotes the interchange of ideas within the shipbuilding field in Asia Pacific area, took place from 13th to 16th, October 2014. The 28th edition of this annual event had the participation of SENER.

Rodrigo Pérez presented about Global Ship Design Engineering, wrote in collaboration with Mirko Toman, both from SENER. The paper analyzes the work distribution in the ship design from shipyards and technical offices, organized in a simultaneously and distributed way until now. The needs in a global environment and the technology available in the market made possible to carry out concurrent engineering, with multiple people accessing simultaneously the information from remote locations at the same time, and all thanks to basic technologies such as data bases and communication applications.

The use of a CAD/CAM system oriented to the ship 3D digital mock up, integrating the complete product model in a single database, facilitates the coordination between the different agents in the ship design and production process, but it is true that incorporates challenges still to be solved for the optimal solution. This article describes SENER´s experience in the development of applications to ensure the remote and concurrent design, by using techniques based on replication of data and thanks to the relational database in FORAN.

The second event was INT-NAM 2014, celebrated in Istambul too, from 23rd to 24th of October, and where Mirko Toman presented Tunning CAD tolos to fit naval design requirements, wrote by the same SENER´s authors.

This work describes the particularities of the naval ship design, in comparison with the commercial one, and how this sector is leveraging changes in the CAD/CAM/CAE systems to fit the requirements. In addition, it is described how the naval design can be optimized by using the mentioned CAD systems.

Military vessels are complex products compounded by millions of parts and equipment, so they required a great number of designers and he concurrent access to the product model. The design cycle are usually very long and with many changes. It is remarkable as a relevant aspect the performance of the software, especially during detail design and fabrication stages.

About FORAN FORAN is a totally integrated computer system specifically developed for the design, production and engineering of ships. It comprises several main packages (hull forms definition, naval architecture, hull structure, outfitting, electrical), a number of common modules (build strategy, drafting, walk-through design review, collaborative engineering), links with production equipment (cutting machines, bending machines, robotic systems, etc.), interfaces to management systems and its own integrated development environment.
