How to share information in the ALC room

In order for everybody to be able to share information from their devices (phones, tablet or computers) the ALC room use units.

There are 5 Chromecast units in the ALC room, one in each of the TV units (ALC-1, ALC-2, ALC-3, ALC-4) and one in the projector (ALC-projector). You can select any of these to cast to or you can cast to all simultaneously (see instructions below).

The Chromecast unit supports iPhone, iPad, Android device and computers using Chrome .

Connect to the WiFi (ALC-room 2.4 or 5), the password is ALC-room, you can also connect as guest if you do not want to switch to the ALC-room WiFi (see below)

The information below is from a number of sources, see the list at the end of the document

Casting content from your phone tablet (iOS and Android) Download the app from the iOS or Play. If you're using an Android 5.0 Lollipop or above device, Casting is just a case of pulling down the notification drawer, hitting the Cast Screen icon and selecting your Chromecast from the list. For other devices, open the app, tap the left-hand navigation to open the menu, tap Cast screen/audio and select your Chromecast device.

Casting from a laptop or stationary computer The Chrome browser can also be used to cast contents from a stationary or laptop where you cannot run the Google Cast app. Install Chrome web browser if you do not have this installed.

• Download the cast extension. • Open up Chrome, head to the and search for Google Cast. • Download the extension (note, it's an extension, not an app) and it'll install, popping a little cast icon - a rectangle with a few lines in the bottom corner, in your menu bar.

Now that you've got the Google Cast extension installed, you can easily cast your current browser to your Chromecast, simply by hitting the button. This makes it possible to cast content that do not support casting. You can also select to cast the entire screen to show other programs running (PowerPoint, Word, Excel etc.). You can also cast to multiple Chromecast units, see below

1 Using guest mode You can cast using phones or tablets without first having to connect to the WiFi that the Chromcast unit use. This only works for Chromecast enabled apps, it is not possible to cast the entire screen. The guest mode must be enabled on the Chromecast unit. • Open a Cast-enabled app from a phone or tablet, without connecting to the WiFi used by the Chromecast units. • The Cast button will automatically appear, even though you’re not connected to the Wi- Fi. Tap the Cast button and select “Nearby device”. • Follow the prompts to connect automatically. • If the phone can’t automatically connect, you can enter the 4-digit PIN displayed on the TV screen or on the “Device” tab of the owner’s Google Cast app.

Chromecast to multiple devices by following the steps below

1. Depending on the number of that you would like to use, you must setup a user for each one in the Chrome Browser. To do this, simply click the settings button in the top right corner of the Chrome browser (it looks like three horizontal lines stacked on top of one another). Click the menu item that reads “Settings”. Another screen will open and you will notice an area toward the bottom where you can add a “Person”. If you have three Chromecasts that you would like to use at once, simply add three “Persons”. I like naming these something simple such as “Chromecast 1”, “Chromecast 2”, etc. As of this writing, this does not work on my Samsung within the Browser for some reason but it should work on any other computer running Chrome. I am using Windows 8.1 with the most recent version of the Chrome Browser running. 2. Now it is time to Chromecast to multiple devices. Now, you are going to want to open separate Chrome windows (not tabs), for the number of Chromecasts that you will be casting to. You are going to have a dedicated window open (not tab) for each Chromecast. If you don’t know how to do this, in Windows simply right click on the Chrome Browser icon on your desktop and choose “New Window”. 3. You will notice in the top right of the Chrome Browser windows, you are going to see an area where you can switch between the “Persons” who you setup in step number 1. Now, all you need to do is choose a different person for each window. 4. Now, go into each window and open the , video, or whatever you want to cast to the Chromecasts. You will need to do this in each browser window. 5. Now go into each window and click the Chromecast tab in the top right browser bar and choose a different Chromecast for each window. You should now be able to Chromecast to multiple devices by using a single PC. This works perfectly in situations where you would like to cast Google Slides or Web sites to multiple displays without using multiple computers. The only downside to this is that your source is coming from three different windows so if you want them in sync with one another, that might now work too well.

List of apps with Google Cast support

There are a number of TV and other media channels that have inbuilt support for casting (SVTPlay, TV4Play, Youtube) but you can cast other media also by casting your entire screen and then opening the media you would like to cast
