Such a selection was substantiated by a need for interdisciplinary confluence, but it was rendered possible by the 60th birthday of Professor Urmas Sutrop, a renowned linguist and cultural researcher. Urmas Sutrop’s fields of research have included human perception and cognisance, on the one hand, and the expression of cultural phenomena in language, on the other. He is known on the international scene for the elaboration of the cogni- tive salience index, which helps to systematise what a group of people regards as important (salient). Urmas Sutrop has made a remarkable contribution to the studies of colour terms, but his interests have also involved other spheres of cognisance, such as temperature, taste, emotions, sign language, language history, and language policy. He has written treatments on theonyms, especially the meaning of the name of Taarapita, as well as on older figures of gods. Urmas Sutrop is editor-in-chief of international journals Eesti ja soome-ugri keeletea- dus / Journal of Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics and Trames, and he has contributed to the publication of a great volume of invaluable cultural riches. Estonian Jumal ‘God’ by Anni Jürine, Karl Pajusalu, Renate Pajusalu, Ilona Tragel, and Ann Veismann focuses on semantics and the use of the word jumal ‘god’ in Estonian. The article gives an overview of the etymology of the word, its meanings, and its role as a linguistic unit fulfilling different communica- tion goals. The article titled Identifying Polarity in Different Text Types by Hille Paju- puu, Rene Altrov, and Jaan Pajupuu describes some options of how to predict the possible effect of a written text on the reader and the creation of an auto- matic identifier of the polarity (positivity-negativity) of Estonian texts, which is independent of domain and of text type. The Estonian polarity identifier is an open source and available for free. Man’s Gender and Age as Based on the Collocations of the Estonian Word Mees ‘Man’ by Liisi Piits explores collocational patterns of the noun mees ‘man’, which reveal social attitudes and stereotypes of age, gender, and behaviour. Differences in the descriptions of men (in comparison to women and boys) as reflected in specific adjectives and verbs are discussed. In the article From Listing Data to Semantic Maps: Cross-Linguistic Com- monalities in Cognitive Representation of Colour, Mari Uusküla and David Bimler use non-metric multidimensional scaling of similarities to reconstruct an abstract semantic network. Their analysis suggests that semantic maps are http://www.folklore.ee/folklore/vol64/intro.pdf similar, despite of the typological differences between the languages. All sub- jects start with salient terms, moving on with prototypal colours, after which they access their semantic knowledge along a trail of associations and start to list less frequent opaque terms, including compounds and derivatives. These findings support the hypothesis that the cognitive organisation of colour terms in our mental lexicon does not follow perceptual similarities. The article by Jodi L. Sandford, titled Color Entrenchment in Middle-School English Speakers: Cognitive Salience Index Applied to Color Listing, presents results of two questionnaires posed to English-speaking middle-school students to verify the level of color term entrenchment and color prototypes at the age of 12. Colour Symbols in Mari Songs by Natalia Glukhova presents a system of colour symbols in Mari folk songs based on the results of a multifold investiga- tion (semantic, quantitative, statistics, etc). The main reconstructed meanings of colour in the songs denote emotions such as joy, wonder, astonishment, grief, melancholy; aesthetic ideals, ethical vices, as well as people’s character and appearance. The article by Piret Voolaid, Children’s Funny Remarks in the Field of Lin- guistic Humour Theory, analyses children’s spontaneous sayings, recorded during daily activities and interaction, as well as the answers given to the teacher’s questions, guided by the latter’s interest, and proposes the theoretical mechanisms of humour they are based on. The article titled Giants in Transmedia by Mare Kõiva and Andres Kuper- janov discusses transmedia narratives based on giant lore, which is described using examples from folkloristics and transmedia dissemination. Giant lore, particularly the national epic Kalevipoeg, a core text of Estonian culture, has generated numerous transmedially circulating texts and various contemporary forms. The article provides a closer look into spontaneous transmedia narratives. Yuri Berezkin and Evgeny Duvakin in their article The Captive Khan and the Clever Daughter-in-Law analyse in detail the tale types The Encoded Mes- sage and The Big Bull. Both find correspondences in Balto-Finnic traditions, which allows us to discuss them in the context of previously unrecognised or poorly studied parallels between the Caucasus and Northern Europe. The ap- proximate date of their links is the second part of the first millennium A.D. The contribution by Ekaterina Velmezova, titled The Estonian Language as Presented in the Great Soviet Encyclopaedia: Language Descriptions and Ideology, compares the articles about the Estonian language published in 1934, 1957, and 1978. The conclusion is that the article in the first edition of the encyclopaedia is the most ideologically marked and reflects the influence of Marrism on its authors, whereas the language is described to a lesser degree.     ANNUAL REPORT 2006 The International Writing Program at The University of Iowa 1 Greetings, I am pleased to send you the annual report of the International Writing Program (IWP), which for nearly forty years has offered a unique residency for professional writers from around the world. The literary community created by the IWP, a community of poets, fiction writers, essayists, playwrights and screenwriters from more than 120 countries, stands as a testament to the myriad ways in which service to the word, in every language, can help to bridge differences between peoples and nations divided. Only connect—the governing idea of the program—means that we devote the fall to connecting writers to readers, translators, students and people from every background. And this report offers a glimpse into some of the connections that last year’s writers made. I am also pleased to tell you that the IWP is evolving in a dynamic fashion. In 2006 we hosted our first symposium on the Greek island of Paros, bringing together writers from every corner of the earth to discuss what we hold in common. A Greek film maker made a documentary about the symposium and an e-book of the essays written for the occasion is in the works. As I write these lines we are preparing not only for another symposium, on the subject of justice, but also for a tour of the Middle East designed to introduce some of America’s most prominent writers to their counterparts in Syria, Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. In the spring of 2008, in partnership with the University of Iowa’s Young Writers Studio, we will launch a project called Between the Lines, bringing a dozen high school students from six Arabic-speaking countries to take part in a summer writing workshop, which we expect to deepen our connection to this strategic part of the world, creating new networks of writers and readers.

The population pyramid, which should have a wide base since the young make up the largest part of the population, is in fact eroded. The burden of bearing the economy and general weal falls onto the shoulders of people who are in their middle years but approaching pension age. Some relief is provided by 15-19-year-olds, whose fairly sizeable ranks are about to enter the workforce. Since the 2000 census, the Estonian population has decreased every year by almost 6,000 people. Estonia's birth rate is negative as there are 15 deaths and only 10 births per 1,000 people. In this year alone, the gap has closed, but deaths still outstrip births. The necessary replacement rate to maintain the population at present levels has been calculated at 2.1 children for every woman of childbearing age; more is necessary to grow the population. Currently this figure stands at only 1.2. In order to tackle the population problem, population experts believe that the Western world and every Western country must give thought to how to stimulate the birth rate, increase the meaning of children to families and parents. Emotion-based values by itself will not be enough to counterbalance the time and money spent on raising a child.     HIIS SITES IN THE RESEARCH HISTORY OF ESTONIAN SACRED PLACES Tõnno Jonuks Abstract: The article gives an overview of the history of research of holy places which are called hiis in Estonia from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 21st century. The emphasis of the study is on academic treatments on the sub- ject, and the article analyses the main research problems. The concept of hiis has been discussed to a lesser degree in the context of national ideology and identity, which nevertheless has left an important mark on academic studies. Key words: hiis, history of research, holy grove, natural holy place Sacred natural places, among which hiis sites (further on the semantics of the Estonian word hiis, see below) form the best known and the most thoroughly investigated part, and which are the most important archaeological places con- nected with Estonian religion, have started to attract multifarious scientific interest only recently (e.g., Remmel 1998; Jonuks 2007; Kütt 2007; Valk 2007a, b, c). Although pagan sanctuaries have been the object of research for the clergy, politicians and historians already since the 18th century, more gen- eral and analytical studies are still lacking. The study of similar sites leaves much to be desired not only in Estonia, but natural holy places have emerged as subject of research during the past few years in the neighbouring countries as well (Bradley 2000, Brink 2001, Vaitkevičius 2004, Urtāns 2008). Despite the paucity of academic studies there has been a long history of the treatment of hiis places and other non-Christian sites in Estonia, especially in the context of national identity.

Introduction The issues of cross-border crime*2 related to Eastern Europe were already topical before the current enlarge- ment of the European Union. The majority of foreign criminologists and experts claim that crimes between the East and the West have increased considerably, diversified, and become more organised over the de- cades, with radical social change and broadening crime opportunities.*3 What will happen in cross-border crime after the accession of the ten countries, including Estonia and other former Soviet republics, is a question to which various answers have been given. Cross-border crime related to Estonia and the other Baltic states has mainly been examined in the context of the movement of offenders from these countries to the European Union and the resulting worsening of the crime situation in the old member states.*4 Such stereotypical assessment is rather prevalent both in Western European public opinion and among law enforcement professionals.*5 Here we can perceive the transfer of similar views to new circumstances, or unwillingness to alter earlier attitudes.
