This booklet contains information from various statistical publications compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), sector ministries, government departments and agencies. The booklet, therefore serves as a brief and comprehensive reference for such crucial statistical information. In recognizing the contribution from various sources of inputs used in the compilation of this booklet, the National Bureau of Statistics would like to thank all organizations in the Government, parastatals and private sectors. The National Bureau of Statistics urges further co-operation in the compilation of the forthcoming editions of this booklet and other statistical publications. In this booklet, information in some tables is sourced from surveys and therefore such information is not available for some years. Comments and suggestions that may help to enrich the next edition of Tanzania in Figures are welcome from all statistics users. This document is also available in the NBS website; www.nbs.go.tz. Data not available - Nil Rounding Figures are rounded off independently therefore, details may not add to total. iv 1.0 BACKGROUND Tanganyika became independent and a Republic on 9th December, 1961 and 1962 respectively. Zanzibar became independent on 10th December, 1963 and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar was established after the Revolution of 12th January, 1964. The two sovereign states formed the United Republic of Tanzania on 26th April, 1964. The general election held in October 2015 brought to power His Excellency Dr. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli from Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) as the fifth President of the United Republic of Tanzania for a five-year term. Dodoma is the capital city and Dar es Salaam is the major commercial city. The official currency is theTanzanian Shilling (TZS) and the national language is Kiswahili, but English is also widely used. 1 2.0 GEOGRAPHY The United Republic of Tanzania, Administrative Regional Boundaries 2 Geographical Location, Boundaries and Area Location Tanzania is located in Eastern Africa between longitudes 290 and 410 East, and latitudes 10 and 120 South. Most Northerly point: Mutukula 10 01'S and 310 25' E Most Southerly point: Mtalika 110 32'S and 370 05' E Most Westerly point: Kigoma 40 52'S and 290 38' E Most Easterly point: Msimbati 100 21'S and 400 26' E Tanzania Mainland Tanzania Mainland has frontiers with the following countries/ocean: North: Kenya and Uganda; West: Rwanda, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo; South West: Zambia and Malawi; South: Mozambique; and East: Indian Ocean. Indeed, the numbers show the trend of my business which allows me to predict the future. My customers are both locals and foreigners who yearly visit the region. In June every year, I gather information from various institutions which receive foreign visitors here in Dodoma. With estimated number of visitors in hand, it gives me ample time to prepare products for my clients’ satisfaction. The 2012 PHC, like previous censuses, will contribute to the improvement of quality of life of Tanzanians through the provision of current and reliable data for policy formulation, development planning and service delivery as well as for monitoring and evaluating national and international development frameworks. Introducti on On July 16th 2010, following the completi on of the 20th session of the Bunge, the President of Tanzania dissolved the 9th Parliament. This event marked the end of the term for Members of Parliament who were elected during the 2005 general electi ons. Now that the last session has been completed it allows us to look back and to consider how MPs performed during their tenure. Did they parti cipate acti vely and represent their consti tuencies by asking questi ons and making interventi ons, or were they silent backbenchers? The Bunge is the Supreme Legislature of Tanzania. The Bunge grants money for running the administrati on and oversees government programs and plans. The Bunge oversees the acti ons of the Executi ve and serves as watchdog to ensure that government is accountable to its citi zens. To achieve all this, Members of Parliament pass laws, authorize taxati on and scruti nize government policies including proposal for expenditure; and debate major issues of the day. For the Bunge to eff ecti vely carry out its oversight role, acti ve parti cipati on by Members of Parliament is criti cal. MPs can be acti ve by making three kinds of interventi ons: they can ask basic questi ons, they can ask supplementary questi ons and they can make contributi ons during debates. This brief follows earlier briefs, the last of which was released in August 2010. It presents seven facts on the performance of MPs, including rati ng who were the most acti ve and least acti ve MPs.
