This booklet contains information from various statistical publications compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), sector ministries, government departments and agencies. The booklet, therefore serves as a brief and comprehensive reference for such crucial statistical information. In recognizing the contribution from various sources of inputs used in the compilation of this booklet, the National Bureau of Statistics would like to thank all organizations in the Government, parastatals and private sectors. The National Bureau of Statistics urges further co-operation in the compilation of the forthcoming editions of this booklet and other statistical publications. In this booklet, information in some tables is sourced from surveys and therefore such information is not available for some years. Data not available - Nil Rounding Figures are rounded off independently therefore, details may not add to total. iv 1.0 BACKGROUND Tanganyika became independent and a Republic on 9th December, 1961 and 1962 respectively. Zanzibar became independent on 10th December, 1963 and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar was established after the Revolution of 12th January, 1964. The two sovereign states formed the United Republic of Tanzania on 26th April, 1964. The general election held in October 2015 brought to power His Excellency Dr. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli from Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) as the fifth President of the United Republic of Tanzania for a five-year term. Dodoma is the capital city and Dar es Salaam is the major commercial city. The official currency is theTanzanian Shilling (TZS) and the national language is Kiswahili, but English is also widely used. 1 2.0 GEOGRAPHY The United Republic of Tanzania, Administrative Regional Boundaries 2 Geographical Location, Boundaries and Area Location Tanzania is located in Eastern Africa between longitudes 290 and 410 East, and latitudes 10 and 120 South. Most Northerly point: Mutukula 10 01'S and 310 25' E Most Southerly point: Mtalika 110 32'S and 370 05' E Most Westerly point: Kigoma 40 52'S and 290 38' E Most Easterly point: Msimbati 100 21'S and 400 26' E Tanzania Mainland Tanzania Mainland has frontiers with the following countries/ocean: North: Kenya and Uganda; West: Rwanda, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo; South West: Zambia and Malawi; South: Mozambique; and East: Indian Ocean.
