As can be expected, this rapid expansion in the country’s retail market has been associated with the emergence of a number of distinct trends in retailing. One of the purposes of this chapter is to examine the principle retail trends which are likely to have an impact on the development of the retail sector in Longford. 3.1 ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE TO DATE Ireland has one of the world’s most globalised economies, with extensive external trade and investment links.
