  • Supervalu: How a Brave Local Brand Defied the Forces of Globalisation
SuperValu: How a brave local brand defied the forces of globalisation DDFH&B COMPANY PROFILE AGENCY The DDFH&B Group consists of DDFH&B Advertising, Goosebump, The Reputations Agency, RMG and Mindshare Media – making it one of the largest Irish companies in creative advertising, media buying and customer relationship/digital marketing. Together, they provide channel-neutral, integrated marketing communications campaigns that deliver real, measurable results. They achieve this level of integration by working in a number of small, multi-disciplined teams, calling it ‘fun sizing’. They continue to be one of the most successful agencies in Ireland, working with clients such as Kerry Foods, SuperValu, The National Lottery, eir, Littlewoods, Lucozade and Molson Coors. CLIENT AWARD LONG TERM EFFECTIVENESS Sponsored by GOLD 1 SuperValu: How a brave local brand defied the forces of globalisation DDFH&B INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND This is a story about long term effectiveness. It is a story about how a brave local retailer with daring ambition wrestled back leadership from Tesco and defied the forces of globalisation. SuperValu was founded in 1979 with a base of just 16 stores, mainly in Munster. While they had grown to 182 stores by 2004, and acquired Superquinn (another Irish retailer) in 2011, they were a retailer with two speeds, an urban speed and a rural speed. The urban speed was still reeling from the Superquinn takeover, when stores were rebranded to SuperValu in 2014. Superquinn had a more premium brand perception, much closer to the Waitrose proposition in the UK. Consumers were in a state of chassis as they felt they were paying convenience store prices in large supermarkets and were unfamiliar with the brand and mistrustful of its quality.

  • The Lawrences of Lawrencetown
Farm implements and spinning wheels were common purchases. Pictured is the watercolour Woman and Girl Spinning at an Open Door (1838) by William Evans. Reproductive Loan Fund Lending to the ‘Industrious Poor’ Clans and Surnames Conference, 17 May 2017 What were the Loan Funds • In the period just before the Great Hunger of the 1840s there were more than 300 independent loan funds making small loans available to the Irish poor. • One fifth of the households of Ireland were borrowers from these funds each year, making them one of the most successful microfinance initiatives anywhere in the world. • So what information can be garnered from these funds, why were they established, what can it tell us about Irish life in this era, and what is available for Genealogists? Loan Fund in Ireland • After the famines of the 1820s surplus charitable donations of c. £55,000 were provided to loan associations in the counties worst affected. • Loan funds were independent, charitably-funded organisations lending in their regions. • Loan amounts were from £1 to £10 (average £3), repayable over 20 weeks. • Regulation of many funds, such as it was, from 1837, was through the ‘Loan Fund Board’. • A distinct, unregulated, micro-credit scheme called the ‘Irish Reproductive Loan Fund’ was also established to provide loans to the industrious poor. Roscommon Journal and Western Impartial Reporter, 21 May 1836, advertising their fund. - In 1836, half of the 2,849 borrowers from one Co Mayo fund were small farmers with close to one quarter being weavers & spinners. - While the intent may have been to lend for industry, funds were called upon to meet rent, at high interest rates, and to those had little understanding of money.

  • Tipperary News Part 6
Clonmel Advertiser. 20-4-1822 We regret having to mention a cruel and barbarous murder, attended with circumstances of great audacity, that has taken place on the borders of Tipperary and Kilkenny. A farmer of the name of Morris, at Killemry, near Nine-Mile-House, having become obnoxious to the public disturbers, received a threatening notice some short time back, he having lately come to reside there. On Wednesday night last a cow of his was driven into the bog, where she perished; on Thursday morning he sent two servants, a male and female, to the bog, the male servant to skin the cow and the female to assist him; but while the woman went for a pail of water, three ruffians came, and each of them discharged their arms at him, and lodged several balls and slugs in his body, and then went off. This occurred about midday. No one dared to interfere, either for the prevention of this crime, or to follow in pursuit of the murderers. The sufferer was quite a youth, and had committed no offence, even against the banditti, but that of doing his master’s business. Clonmel Advertiser 24-8-1835 Last Saturday, being the fair day at Carrick-on-Suir, and also a holiday in the Roman Catholic Church, an immense assemblage of the peasantry poured into the town at an early hour from all directions of the surrounding country. The show of cattle was was by no means inferior-but the only disposable commodity , for which a brisk demand appeared evidently conspicuous, was for Feehans brown stout.
