Meissen Porcelain Manufactory
Meissen porcelain was born out of passion. Augustus the Strong (1670- 1733), Elector of Saxony, zealously pursued the so-called white gold after becoming struck with “Maladie de Porcelaine.” It was for him that alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger (1682-1719) created the first European porcelain in 1708. At MEISSEN, this storied passion remains the fundament of the manufactory’s masterful works up to this day. More than 300 years of tra- dition and exquisite craftsmanship, unbounded imagination and an avowed dedication to modernity come together to create a timeless aesthetic that can be lived and experienced – every piece handmade in Germany.
In 1710, Augustus the Strong decreed the founding of the Meissen porce- lain manufactory, making it the oldest in Europe. The signet of two crossed swords has been the unmistakable trademark of Meissen porcelain since 1722. The swords represent the uncompromising quality, unsurpassed craftsmanship and cultural heritage to which MEISSEN remains committed to this day: from the purest raw material sourced from the manufactory’s own kaolin mine, the world’s largest and oldest trove of moulds, models, patterns and decorations spanning centuries of artistic epochs, to the 10,000 proprietary paint formulas created in the on-site laboratory. And last but not least, they stand for the unsurpassed handicraft, experience and dedication of the manufactory’s artisans, lending every Meissen piece its one-of-a-kind beauty.
It is the ability to draw upon this rich history to continually create anew that makes Meissen creations mesmerizing and covetable in equal measure. Thoughtful reflection on the history that has shaped Meissen porcelain, from the Baroque to the present day, with openness to modern design, art and culture: This is what MEISSEN stands for. MEISSEN® COSMOPOLITAN pays homage to the splendour of mo- dern Grand Hotel silverware, presenting an extensive tableware se- ries in crisp and clear design. The collection takes on a unique role in Meissen’s product portfolio, allowing unprecedented variability in combining its objects, both within and between decor variants. More than ten different decorative designs are realised within the collection. This variability along with the collection’s effortless ele- gance pave the way for a contemporary dining culture. Alongside its classic white variant, showcasing Meissen porcelain’s coveted lustre, the collection also presents a thoroughly novel design ap- proach – gold- and platinum-enamelled surfaces, and the more sub- dued “Mesh Structures”. All finishes have been applied by hand, channelling the manufactory’s artisanal tradition into a thoroughly modern tableware design.

24 25 DECOR Blue Orchid and Blue Orchid Platinum
Constantly reflecting on one’s own rich artistic heritage is deeply rooted in the Meissen tradition. The filigree “Blue Orchid” decor is no exception. It is based on a 1970 design by Professor Heinz Werner: “Blue Orchid on a Branch” is one of the ingenious porcelain painter’s most popular motifs. For the “MEISSEN® Cosmopolitan” collection, one element of Werner’s original is placed in the centre of the elegant “Mesh platinum” pattern, lending the pieces a minimalist feel. The “Blue Orchid” is created using an elaborate un- der-glaze painting technique. The paint is applied directly to the unfired, still porous porcelain, allowing it to absorb the colour immediately, and making it impossible to correct any errors. The design’s initial appearance, a matte grey, only attains its characteristic cobalt blue radiance after glazing and in reaction to the subsequent glaze firing.
We recommend washing by hand so as to avoid damaging the decors.

Once appointed as the personal alchemist to Augustus the Strong, Johann Friedrich Böttger spent several years at the court but was never able to provide the gold demanded by the Elector of Saxony. Instead, as a result of his efforts, he discovered the formula for the production of porcelain, which at that time was almost more valuable than gold. For the “Gold” decor of the “MEISSEN® COSMOPOLITAN” collection, the porcelain is plated with truly opulent swaths of the precious metal. For this, Meissen’s specialized pain- ters use fine burnished gold, which is matte right after leaving the kiln. The decor receives its characteristic shine through a polishing with a sharpened semi-precious stone, an agate stylus. Matching designs in “Mesh Gold” offer a subtle counterpoint to these lavish pieces.
