About 377 million (31%)1 of India’s population lives in 7,935 urban areas and contributes 63% of gross domestic product (GDP). About 70% of the urban population resides in 4682 rapidly growing urban agglomerations and cities with a population of over 100,000, including 53 cities with a population of more than a million. Growth in the remaining small towns was nominal. The contribution to GDP from the urban areas is expected to increase to about 75% as the proportion of urban population reaches 40% of the total population by 2030. 2. Urban water supply in India is characterized by intermittent water supply (often for a couple of hours in a week) and low coverage, high nonrevenue water, and poor cost recovery. No city in India can claim for universal coverage with continuous pressurized water supply. The service levels are even lower in small towns, which have been upgraded from village character to a town. These small towns mostly depend on local groundwater sources with no treatment and no planned hydraulic networks. The small town local bodies have been struggling with limited financial resources further aggravated by a lack of competent and skilled human resources capable of delivering services expected from a fully functional water utility. 3. The investment in urban infrastructure3 up to the year 2031 was estimated at $53.5 billion for water supply and $40.5 billion for sewerage services at 2009–10 prices. -

A proposed diamond mining project in India could lead to the felling of over 200,000 trees 10 June 2021 The proposed Bunder diamond block in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh has been in the news for the wrong reasons over the years. The diamond mine project, which is now with Aditya Birla Group’s Essel Mining & Industries Limited (EMIL), is once again facing dark clouds due to protests over ecological concerns, as it could result in the felling of over 200,000 trees. The proposed project will be spread across an area of 364 hectares in the Buxwaha forests, which is about 225 kilometres northeast of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh’s capital city. The block is estimated to have 34 million carats of rough diamonds. The National Mineral Development Corporation’s (NMDC) existing diamond mine is about 175 kilometres from Bunder. According to EMIL, it plans to develop a fully mechanised opencast mine and state of the art processing plant for recovery of diamonds with an investment of about Rs2,500 crore ($375.7 million). It notes that the project, once operational, has the potential to become one of the largest diamond mines in the Asian region. The company targets the execution of the mining lease by the end of the financial year 2022. However, the project is facing stiff opposition, including social media campaigns. Already, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the supreme court of India, seeking a stay on the project which had been secured by the EMIL in 2019. “The Forest clearance report shows that the project would cost over 200,000 trees in the forest region and also use a lot of water. -

K. Sharma Abstract Infrastructure development is one of the driving forces to attain swift economic growth. It plays an important role in the reduction of poverty, improvements in standard of living and leads to sustained development of a region. This study is an attempt to analyse the micro- regional disparities in infrastructural development across 40 blocks of Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. The study is based on secondary sources of data, obtained from various government agencies for the year, 2011. In order to find out the level of infrastructural development, composite score method has been used by considering 12 variables at the block level. The study reveals widespread micro-regional infrastructural disparity, ranging from highest score of 1.34 for Nowgong block to lowest of -0.95 for Buxwaha block. On the basis of Principal Component Analysis, four dominant factors governing the level of infrastructural development in the region have been identified. These key factors may be addressed on priority basis to enhance the living condition of the people and to reduce micro regional disparities.
