Ferrell, Tim Evans, and Kate Parker Horigan Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology Western Kentucky University This thesis focuses on various topics related to transgender identity and culture. Through a combination of ethnographic and secondary research, I studied transgender coming out narratives, trans media representation, transgender performance and identity, and conceptualizations of group and chosen family in a community of trans students, the WKU Transgender and Non-Binary Student Group. `The three chapters of my thesis address some of the traditional milestones of a trans person’s acculturation: coming out, constructing one’s newly discovered trans identity, and finding community. Chapter 1 explores coming out as transgender, and the way in in which coming out is valued and discussed within trans communities. Chapter 2 discusses transgender representation, and how gender presentation is contested and complicated by transfolk. Chapter 2 also addresses trans media representation, and the way in which transfolk create their own media representation in the absence of adequate and accurate trans representation in popular culture. Chapter 3 provides an in-depth analysis of the WKU Transgender and Non-Binary Student Group, discusses how the group functions as a chosen family, and explores the way in which group membership helps group members mitigate stigma and deal with trauma. vii Introduction Background In some ways, this thesis began on October 11, 2016. It was National Coming Out Day, and I had spent the morning interviewing many young LGBTQIA+ students who were participating in the Queer Student Union’s tabling event. Home Depot had donated a free-standing door and doorframe; the group hung a rainbow flag over the door, and it was forever opening, giving each person the opportunity to “come out of the closet.” The group played catchy pop music and handed out buttons and candy to passersby; they talked, danced, and engaged anxious loiterers in conversation, creating a welcoming space for questions and exploration. I marveled at the confidence and enthusiasm of this young group, comparing their experience with my own. Among the QSU students, coming out was treated as a positive and seemingly minor experience, while in 2009, my freshman year at Western Kentucky University, National Coming Out Day had been a much more ambivalent event. Many of the students I interviewed at the QSU’s 2016 event had had mostly positive coming out experiences, which contrasted greatly with the experiences of myself, friends, and acquaintances in 2009. I found myself wondering, “if coming out is no longer that big of a deal, is this event still necessary?” In the early afternoon, I interviewed Kanyon McKee, and my perspective shifted dramatically. McKee shared their coming out narrative with me, and I realized that, although coming out had perhaps gotten easier for some, it remained dangerous or difficult for others – especially transfolk. When McKee came out to their1 mother as trans, she became emotionally abusive and accused them of being mentally ill. Kanyon’s story was short, painful, and unresolved. As we were walking back to rejoin the group, 1 McKee explained that they were frustrated with National Coming Out Day because it puts undue pressure on transfolk to come out, and that upon coming out, trans people often experience heightened rates of discrimination, familial ostracization, and violence. McKee’s comments demonstrated significant differences between the coming out experience of transgender individuals and lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. I decided that the coming out narratives themselves needed closer attention. Although I was not able to fully address transgender coming out narratives at that time, the encounter sparked an interest that continued to develop over the next year. Eventually, I realized that my many questions would require an extended research project, and this project was born. My thesis will explore various elements of transgender identity and culture. I will discuss the coming out process, issues of media representation and expectations for transgender and non-binary gender presentation, and the ways in which groups of transgender and non-binary individuals form and maintain community. Through fieldwork and secondary research, I hope to contribute to the young, yet rapidly growing field of transgender studies, and to add whatever insights I yield to the study of queer folklore – a subject that is sorely underrepresented in folklore research. Literature Review [Trans]gender Studies An early precursor to transgender studies can be found in Harold Garfinkle’s Studies in Ethnomethodology (1967). Garfinkle presents the case of his patient, Agnes, a transsexual woman who began taking estrogen at a young age in order to maintain feminine characteristics. Although Garfinkle’s language and discussion of gender identity 2 are dated, his discussion of Agnes’ case demonstrates the many complexities of being transgender in a society that has strict gender prescriptions. Garfinkle discusses the stigmatized nature of trans bodies and the personal and societal reasons that a trans person would attempt to pass as cis. Garfinkle states that society only allows individuals to subvert traditional roles in highly ceremonialized occasions, and that, in this manner, “societies exercise close controls over the ways in which the sex composition of their own populations is constituted and changed” (1967:116). Reid Recognizing the importance of context with regard to youth agency, this study explores how 8 Black LGBTQ+ youth understand their practices of agency in ballroom culture, an underground Black LGBTQ+ culture. Ballroom was chosen as the backdrop for this scholarly endeavor because it allowed for the study of the phenomenon — Black LGBTQ+ youth agency — in a space where the youth might feel more able to be themselves, especially given that the 2019 Black LGBTQ+ youth report published by the Human Rights Campaign revealed that only 35% of Black LGBTQ+ youth reported being able to “be themselves at school” (Kahn et al., 2019). Thus, instead of asking what is wrong with schools, this study inverted the question to explore what is “right” about ballroom culture in which Black LGBTQ+ youth might practice different kinds of agency due to their intersectional racial and LGBTQ+ identities being recognized and celebrated. Framed by the youth’s understanding of their own agency across different contexts, my research illuminates the complex interrelationships between youth agency, social identity, and context. Extending the literature on youth agency and Black LGBTQ+ youth, the findings of this study suggest that in many ways these youth are always already practicing agency to work toward different ends, and that these different end goals are greatly mediated by the contexts in which they find themselves.

Lundy Abstract Against a tense socio-political backdrop of white supremacy, intensifying pressures of neoliberal fiscal austerity, and queer necropolitics, this thesis addresses performance-based activist forms of place-making for urban-based queer, trans, and gender nonconforming communities of colour. Using participant observation and qualitative interviews with pioneering members of Montréal’s Kiki scene and Ottawa’s emerging Waacking community and interpreting my findings through the theoretical lens of queer of colour theory, critical whiteness studies, queer Latinx performance studies and Chicana feminism, I argue that Kiki subculture, which is maintained by pedagogical processes of ‘each one, teach one’, is instrumental in facilitating i) life-affirming queer kinship bonds, (ii) alternative ways to simultaneously embody and celebrate non- normative gender expression with Black, Asian, and Latinx identity, iii) non-capitalist economies of sharing, and iv) hopeful strategies of everyday community activism and resilience to appropriative processes during economic insecurity and necropolitical turmoil. ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge the members of Montréal’s Kiki scene and Ottawa’s Waacking founder for their willingness to participate in this study despite the understandable reflex to safe-guard their own. Cosplay refers to acts of role- playing based on characters from anime and manga, or Japanese animation and comic respectively. Crossplay, on the other hand, is similar to Cosplay, except that participants dressed up as characters that are of their opposite gender. While Cosplay is already regarded as a queer activity, Crossplay is observed as the queerest among the queer, as it defies the traditional gender norms in patriarchal country like Malaysia. This research is significant as both Malaysian Cosplay subculture (and Crossplay), which is increasingly popular, remained understudied, as well as issues with regard to the deviant aspect of gender performativity. Using data collected from in-depth interviews with eight respondents and four sessions of participant observation at various Cosplay events, the researcher observed interactions between Crossplayers and Cosplayers, and subsequently analysed the findings to provide insights into freedom of gender performativity within the queer space. Findings and analyses showed that, while the queer space provides a space for participants to construct their very own gender identity, it is not independent of the influence of the traditional gender dichotomy.

Maybe, then, I will always be just an actor.”— Scott Turner Schofield, “Are We There Yet?” “What makes us so confident that we know what’s real?”—Jamison Green, Becoming a Visible Man Acting Cis Traditional actor training espouses “bodily unity,” or unobstructed access to all parts of the physiological (and expectedly able) body; anything else would be what Jerzy Grotowski calls “biological chaos.”1 A focus on bodily unity in actor training implies that an alternate, dysphoric, or oth- erwise non-normative embodied experience is “chaotic”—an obstacle to overcome, unhealthy and unwhole—and that embodied disconnections signify failure or lack. This attitude toward disjointedness, when applied to transgender embodiment, infers that trans people are nothing more than broken cisgender people.2 But the trans “whole” body offers an alternative conception of “wholeness,” one with empty spaces creating a fragmented human form. For trans men, that fragmentation localizes around the chest and pelvis, but the empty spaces that emerge there create healthier and more peaceful versions of embodiment for many trans people.

It analyses the representation of drag by explaining some basic terms and the study of the history of drag. It then analyses the evolution of the representation of drag queens in movies and shows. The main focus of this thesis is the American TV show RuPaul's Drag Race and how it changed the portrayal of drag and the LGBTQ+ community in popular culture.     Immigration and Sexual Citizenship: Gender, Sexuality and Ethnicity in Contemporary France Mehammed Amadeus Mack Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Mehammed Amadeus Mack All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dissertation Title: “Immigration and Sexual Citizenship: Gender, Sexuality and Ethnicity in Contemporary France” Mehammed Amadeus Mack This dissertation considers discourses bearing on the social dynamics of immigration and postcolonial diversity in contemporary France in light of their interconnections with issues of sexuality and assimilation. Synthesizing and building on recent work by anthropologists, sociologists and cultural theorists it explores the current debate over French identity--a debate that has to a considerable extent revolved around the impact of recent postwar immigration to France and the "integration" of immigrants on the cultural level, and of which a recent symptom has been the Sarkozy government's launch of a public national debate about "l'identité nationale" (national identity). Overall, my project focuses on the intermingling of the cultural and the political in cultural representations of immigrants and their descendants. Specifically, I consider the highly charged terrain of the representation of sexuality. In the discourse on laïcité (secularism) and integration, gender norms and tolerance of homosexuality have emerged as key components and are now often employed to highlight immigrants' "un-French" attitudes. I argue that, as French and immigrant identities have been called into question, sexuality has constituted a favored prism through which to establish the existence of difference. Through the study of cultural representations of immigration, I will explain how the potential of immigrants and their descendants to assimilate is often judged according to the "fitness" of their attitudes about sexuality.

    1 Undoing Gender through Performing the Other Anastasia Seregina1 1Anastasia Seregina ([email protected]) is a Lecturer in Marketing at Goldsmiths, University of London, Lewisham Way, New Cross, London SE14 6NW, United Kingdom. 2 Abstract Following the perspective on gender as a socially constructed performance, consumer research has given light to how individuals take on, negotiate, and express a variety of gender roles. Yet the focus of research has remained on gender roles themselves, largely overlooking the underlying process of gender performativity and consumers’ engagement with it in the context of their everyday lives. Set within a performance methodology and the context of crossplay in live action role-playing games, this paper explores how individuals undo gender on a subjective level, thus becoming conscious and reflexive of gender performativity. The study suggests that individuals become active in undoing gender through engaging in direct, bodily performance of the gender other. Such performance does not challenge or ridicule norms, but pushes individuals to actively figure out for themselves how gender is performed. As a result, individuals become aware of gender performativity and become capable of actively recombining everyday performance. Butler (1990, 2004) proposed that gender is a performatively produced doing, that is, it is a doing based in a repetition that creates its own effect.
