Kesey is a young, talented novelist who has just seen his first book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nestpublished, and who is consequently on the receiving end of a great deal of fame and fortune. While living in Palo Alto and attending Stanford's creative writing program, Kesey signs up to participate in a drug study sponsored by the CIA. The drug they give him is a new experimental drug called LSD. Under the influence of LSD, Kesey begins to attract a band of followers. They are drawn to the transcendent states they can achieve while on the drug, but they are also drawn to Kesey, who is a charismatic leader. They call themselves the "Merry Pranksters" and begin to participate in wild experiments at Kesey's house in the woods of La Honda, California. These experiments, with lights and noise, are all engineered to create a wild psychedelic experience while on LSD. They paint everything in neon Day-Glo colors, and though the residents and authorities of La Honda are worried, there is little they can do, since LSD is not an illegal substance. The Pranksters first venture into the wider world by taking a trip east, to New York, for the publication of Kesey's newest novel.

  • A Billion Years of Deformation in the Central Appalachians: Orogenic Processes and Products
Downloaded from fieldguides.gsapubs.org on October 15, 2015 The Geological Society of America Field Guide 40 2015 A billion years of deformation in the central Appalachians: Orogenic processes and products Steven J. Whitmeyer Department of Geology and Environmental Science, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22807, USA Christopher M. Bailey Department of Geology, College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia 23187, USA David B. Spears Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy, Division of Geology and Mineral Resources, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903, USA ABSTRACT The central Appalachians form a classic orogen whose structural architecture developed during episodes of contractional, extensional, and transpressional defor- mation from the Proterozoic to the Mesozoic. These episodes include components of the Grenville orogenic cycle, the eastern breakup of Rodinia, Appalachian orogenic cycles, the breakup of Pangea, and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean basin. This fi eld trip examines an array of rocks deformed via both ductile and brittle processes from the deep crust to the near-surface environment, and from the Mesoproterozoic to the present day. The trip commences in suspect terranes of the eastern Piedmont in central Vir- ginia, and traverses northwestward across the Appalachian orogen through the thick- skinned Blue Ridge basement terrane, and into the thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belt of the Valley and Ridge geologic province. The traverse covers a range of deformation styles that developed over a vast span of geologic time: from high-grade metamorphic rocks deformed deep within the orogenic hinterland, to sedimentary rocks of the fore- land that were folded, faulted, and cleaved in the late Paleozoic, to brittle extensional structures that overprint many of these rocks.

  • In August 1969, the Massive, Three-Day Woodstock Music & Art
In August 1969, the massive, three-day Woodstock Music & Art Fair had proved that hundreds of thousands of young people could gather peacefully even in a seemingly chaotic environment rich with sex, drugs and rock and roll. Four months later, it would become clear that Woodstock owed its success not to the inherent peacefulness of the 1960s youth culture, but to the organizational acumen of the event's producers. That idea was proven in the violent, uncontrolled chaos of the disastrous Altamont Speedway Free Festival, held on this day in 1969 in the northern California hills 60 miles east of San Francisco. Altamont was the brainchild of the Rolling Stones, who hoped to cap off their U.S. tour in late 1969 with a concert that would be the West Coast equivalent of Woodstock, in both scale and spirit. Unlike Woodstock, however, which was the result of months of careful planning by a team of well-funded organizers, Altamont was a largely improvised affair that did not even have a definite venue arranged just days before the event. It was only on Thursday, December 4, 1969, that organizers settled on the Altamont Speedway location for a free concert that was by then scheduled to include Santana; the Jefferson Airplane; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; and the Grateful Dead, all in support of the headlining Stones. The event would also include, infamously, several dozen members the Hells Angels motorcycle gang acting as informal security staff in exchange for $500 worth of beer as a “gratuity.” It was dark by the time the concert’s next-to-last act, the Grateful Dead, was scheduled to appear.
