Vol.3, No.1, 55-62 Published Online February 2013 in SciRes (http://www.scirp.org/journal/ojpp) http://dx.doi.org/10.4236/ojpp.2013.31009 Dressing after Dressing: Sadra’s Interpretation of Change Muhammad Kamal Asia Institute, The University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia Email: [email protected] Received October 22nd, 2012; revised November 25th, 2012; accepted December 10th, 2012 This paper deals with the doctrine of transubstantial change advocated by Mulla Sadra in which sub- stances as well as accidents are thought to be in constant and gradual change. Against Aristotle’s doctrine of accidental change, Mulla Sadra argues that no stable ground can bring about change and since sub- stance is renewable it cannot carry identity of a changing existent. Here we investigate whether identity is possible or not. If it is possible then what becomes a ground for establishing identity of changing sub- stances. Keywords: Ontology; Existence; Essence; Change; Substantial Change; Accidental Change; Identity and Difference Sadra’s Ontology Contrary to Suhrawardi’s ontological position, Mulla Sadra does not accept the idea that “Existence” is unreal or that it is a While Muslim Peripatetic thinkers under the influence of mental concept. For him, “Existence” is an objective reality and Aristotle accepted change in accidents, Mulla Sadra insisted on the principle of all things. Its reality encompasses the lowest change in substance. For him, change in accidents is thinkable and the highest. At the highest it is the existence of the Nece- when substance undergoes change and transformed. Here I ssary Being. -

JOURNAL OF RELIGIOUS THOUGHT: A QUARTERLY OF SHIRAZ UNIVERSITY VOL.1 (New), NO.1, (Ser. 10), SPRING 2004 Spiritual Walayah or Love in the Mathnavi Mawlavi: A Shi‘ite View Dr. Sharam Pazouki∗ Abstract In its true meaning, walayah means love, a believer is a lover and faith is love. The main topic of the Mathnavi is love. In this poem, Mawlavi speaks of the nature of love, the way to it, its master and perils. Among the three approaches to religion, that is, narrative, rational and heartfelt, he chooses the last because it is the way of faith and love, or walayah. He considers ‘Ali to be the source or wali for this way after the Prophet. Thus the Mathnavi is also a book of walayah, and Mawlavi is a Shi‘ite, not in the current sense of the jurists or dialectical theologians, but in its true meaning, that is, belief in the continuing spirituality and walayah of the Prophet in the person of ‘Ali, and belief that after the Prophet there is always a living guide (wali) on the way of love. Key Words: 1- Mawlavi 2- Love 3- Walayah 4- Mathnavi 1. Approaches to Islam There are three main approaches to Islam found among classical Muslim authors: narration, reason and the heart. Among various Muslim scholars, it is only the Sufis who have followed the way of the heart. According to this way, God is not only the divine legislator, to Whom one prays with fear of hell and yearning to enter paradise, but He is the Beloved.1 The way of the heart is the way of love, in which the wayfarer purifies his heart until he gains union with God. -

The emphasis of the paper is mostly on the reasons and causes of uneven development of this intellectual tradition in Muslim countries. I shall develop my arguments from within the philosophical framework of critical rationalism. While the views of various Muslim philosophers will be critically, though briefly, assessed, the role of other Muslim scholars such as theologians (mutakal- limun), mystics (‘urafa and Sufis) and jurists (fuqaha) in facilitating or hindering the har- monious growth of Muslims’ philosophical heritage will also be touched upon. Keywords Muslim philosophies, critical rationalism, Mashshaee (Peripatetic) School, the School of Shiraz, anti-philosophy trends I. Introduction As a critical rationalist, I regard philosophy as an intellectual pursuit to ex- plore and understand those aspects of reality which empirical sciences, or other human cognitive tools, cannot investigate.2 The above view of philoso- phy is, therefore, in contrast to other views, which regard philosophy to be a “language game” or an activity with “therapeutic purposes” only, or a tool for “domination and subjugation”. In my view, philosophies are developed in response to the challenges introduced to people by reality. If the cultural ecosystem in which those challenges have arisen is rich enough, it can pave the way for the emergence of sophisticated philosophical systems. -

The Institute's programmes encourage a perspective which is not confined to the theological and religious heritage of Islam, but seek to explore the relationship of religious ideas to broader dimensions of society and culture. They thus encourage an inter-disciplinary approach to the materials of Islamic history and thought. Particular attention is also given to issues of modernity that arise as Muslims seek to relate their heritage to the contemporary situation. Kiashemshaki Abulfadhl Kiashemshaki (Al-Mustafa University, Qum, Iran) THE UNIVERSAL DEGREES, MANIFESTATIONS AND PRESENCES OF EXISTENCE IN IBN ‘ARABI’S SCHOOL OF MYSTICISM One of the most basic discussions in ‘irfān naẓarī (theoretical mysticism), in the section where its adherents discuss ontology, is the debate surrounding the degrees of God’s manifestation. The reason for this is that, in the mystic’s view, real existence, or the reality of existence, is the existence of the Truth (i.e., God) who manifests Himself in the degrees and mirrors that are the manifold creatures of the world. In any case, the Truth, from the point of view of its reality and essential self, is hidden within the veil of its honor and awesomeness. This magnanimity and loftiness prevent it from being revealed. In the words of the famous mystic of Neyshabur, ‘Attar, there is no relation between Him and anything other than Him: He always is and always will be the Absolute King; He is drowned in the perfection of His honor. He does not display Himself, in that state in which He essentially is. When will the intellect reach the pinnacle of absolute existence, where He resides? It is for this very reason that it is pointless for anyone to spiritually aspire to attain Him and seeking His presence is to pursue a goal which is impossible to achieve. The only thing which we can confess is that behind all the limited be- ings and possible existences there is a Reality that is unlimited and uncondition- al, that has been manifested in the mirrors that these limited beings are. -
