JOURNAL OF RELIGIOUS THOUGHT: A QUARTERLY OF SHIRAZ UNIVERSITY VOL.1 (New), NO.1, (Ser. 10), SPRING 2004 Spiritual Walayah or Love in the Mathnavi Mawlavi: A Shi‘ite View Dr. Sharam Pazouki∗ Abstract In its true meaning, walayah means love, a believer is a lover and faith is love. The main topic of the Mathnavi is love. In this poem, Mawlavi speaks of the nature of love, the way to it, its master and perils. Among the three approaches to religion, that is, narrative, rational and heartfelt, he chooses the last because it is the way of faith and love, or walayah. He considers ‘Ali to be the source or wali for this way after the Prophet. Thus the Mathnavi is also a book of walayah, and Mawlavi is a Shi‘ite, not in the current sense of the jurists or dialectical theologians, but in its true meaning, that is, belief in the continuing spirituality and walayah of the Prophet in the person of ‘Ali, and belief that after the Prophet there is always a living guide (wali) on the way of love. Key Words: 1- Mawlavi 2- Love 3- Walayah 4- Mathnavi 1. Approaches to Islam There are three main approaches to Islam found among classical Muslim authors: narration, reason and the heart. Among various Muslim scholars, it is only the Sufis who have followed the way of the heart. According to this way, God is not only the divine legislator, to Whom one prays with fear of hell and yearning to enter paradise, but He is the Beloved.1 The way of the heart is the way of love, in which the wayfarer purifies his heart until he gains union with God. -

The Institute's programmes encourage a perspective which is not confined to the theological and religious heritage of Islam, but seek to explore the relationship of religious ideas to broader dimensions of society and culture. They thus encourage an inter-disciplinary approach to the materials of Islamic history and thought. Particular attention is also given to issues of modernity that arise as Muslims seek to relate their heritage to the contemporary situation. Within the Islamic tradition, the Institute's programmes seek to promote research on those areas which have had relatively lesser attention devoted to them in secondary scholarship to date. These include the intellectual and literary expressions of Shi'ism in general, and Ismailism in particular. In the context of Islamic societies, the Institute's programmes are informed by the full range and diversity of cultures in which Islam is practised today, from the Middle East, Southern and Central Asia and Africa to the industrialized societies of the West, thus taking into consideration the variety of contexts which shape the ideals, beliefs and practices of the faith. The publications facilitated by the Institute will fall into several distinct categories: 1 Occasional papers or essays addressing broad themes of the relationship between religion and society in the historical as well as modern context, with special reference to Islam, but encompassing, where appropriate, other faiths and cultures. -

An increasing number of books have been published on Shiism in the last few decades, especially after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. A doyen of Shia Studies in the broadest sense, Dr Farhad Daftary’s publications have cer- tainly enriched and broadened our knowledge of this field. The book under review, consisting of six chapters, is another of his many outstanding publications on Shiism. Chapter One (Introduction: Progress in the Study of Shi῾i Islam, pp. 1-24) is an essential and enlightening survey of Shia studies. There are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world, of whom some 200 million, or 15%, are Shiites. Their con- tribution to the intellectual, artistic and cultural achievements of Islamic civilizations has been greater than that figure would suggest. Shia dynasties such as the Buyids, Fatimids, Hamdanids, Safawids and other smaller dynasties have played a cardinal role in creating the diversity of religiosity in the world of Islam. The author gives a concise overview of European perceptions and appreciation of Shiism in medi- eval times, such as fascination with the “Old Man of the Mountain,” Hasan-i Sabbah (d. 1124). The scientific assess- ment of Shiism in Europe starts with orientalists such as Baron A.I. Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838), a Professor of Arabic who became the chair of Persian Studies in Collège de France in 1806. -

Praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the worlds who in His essential divine substance is before time and ever-existent, who in His own necessary independence is the beginning and the end and whose eternity does not admit of end. Praise belongs to Him who by His essence is Him. The Beloved is He who is Allah, the Soul Being, the Beloved is Him. He is the Independent, the Eternal, who begets no one. The One, who was not begotten, without opponent or rival. He is the Possessor of Splendour, the One, the Eternal. His Oneness is not, however, of the kind to be counted. He is without likeness, existent before creation and time. There has been, nor is nothing similar to Him. He is untouched by time and place. The chapter of The Unity (in the Qur'an) is an indication of this. He is Existence from before time and without need. He is the Real and the Creator of the different essences. He is without annihilation, subsistent of Himself. He exists by His essence, the Source of Outpouring of all essences. May blessings and peace without end be on Muhammad, the first radiant manifestation of the Essence, the first of the messengers of Allah, whose reality is the radiant point of manifestation of the essence of the Lord of the Worlds, who is himself also the seal of His prophets, and on his caliph and successor, the greatest of caliphs, the most excellent of guardians and the seal of spiritual authority from the Maker of the heavens and the earth, the Commander of the Faithful and the just divider of people between the Fire and the Garden, the yamin of Allah' - one of Allah's people of the right - as mentioned in the Qur'an. -

I assume that there is no need to introduce Imam ‘Ali, although a few brief words about him may help to highlight the aspects of his personality that are relevant to the discussion of ‘irfan. ‘Irfan is knowledge, but it is used in the sense of a special esoteric knowledge (ma’rifah) of God and the way toward him, in some ways akin to the Greek concept of gnosis. The knowledge sought by those who follow the way of ‘irfan is ultimately knowledge of God. The term ‘irfan is also used for the path that leads to this knowledge, as well as the theoretical speculation on theological topics based on the knowledge gained by those who have advanced on the path. -

In Christianity, the soul becomes spiritual as it is sanctified through the gifts of grace brought by the Holy Spirit as it enters into the soul itself; while spirituality in Islam, is the quality of being inwardly meaningful, and the Muslim becomes spiritual as the mirror of the soul is polished to reflect the image of God, and the soul becomes sanctified as it is led to enter the spiritual realm. In Shi'ite spirituality, the Imams as divine guides are especially prominent. The spiritual (ma'navi), in Islam, is that which pertains to inner meaning, as opposed to the outward literal form; and spirituality (ma'naviyyat) is the quality of being inwardly meaningful, or the quality of possessing a purport to which concern is directed. The Christian becomes spiritual as the soul is sanctified through the gifts of grace brought by the Holy Spirit. The Muslim becomes spiritual as the mirror of the soul is polished to reflect the image of God that was hidden beneath the dust that covered it. In Christianity, the soul becomes sanctified as the Spirit enters into it; while in Islam the soul becomes sanctified as it is led to enter the spiritual realm.
