These are core aspects of our humanity. Much of my work focuses on Haitian Vodou music. --La fin du monde by N.A.P. (1998) and Mauvais Oeil by Lunatic (2000) are considered breakthrough albums for lyrics that draw from the Arabic-Islamic lexical field. Since (2001) many artists have drawn from the Islamic lexical field in their raps. Though a number of different political parties submitted proposals, then-Prime Minister Jacques Chirac’s centre-right coalition led this initiative and pushed for measures that would have the effect of generally restricting eligibility for French citizenship. In particular, the government proposed to modify the process by which children born in France to immigrant parents could gain French citizenship. These reforms had come in the wake of a massive influx of immigrants in the second half of the twentieth century, many of whom came from North Africa but also elsewhere. As a new generation of young French men and women of immigrant heritage was coming of age, many in France began to raise questions about their inherent “Frenchness” and therefore place in French society and entitlement to nationality. According to proponents of the proposed amendments, by replacing the automatic right to citizenship through birth on French soil with an active process of application, these measures would ensure that only those expressing a desire to become French would receive citizenship.

The work is a valuable corrective to ubiquitous binaries: nation/globalization, citizen/immigrant, assimilation/cultural refusal. His accounts of individual trajectories, organizational strategies, and state policies contribute to a particularly fine understanding of the choices, strategies, and tactics available to global subalterns. Silverstein's fieldwork in contemporary France examines the reinvestment in colonial categories of Berber identity and the redeployment of these identities as one strategy of identity for Kabyle Algerians in France.   • Doubts About the Republic's Abilities to Integrate the Immigrants: Between Uncertain Policies and Contrasted Social Realities
    Integration of immigrants in France: an historical perspective Jacques Barou Summary For a long time, the integration of immigrants in France appeared to be successful. However, in recent years we have noticed a growing difficulty for migrants and their descendants to find their place in the receiving society, irrespective of the policies implemented by socialist or conservative governments. The so-called French republican model of integration has partly become ineffective. An analysis of the concept of integration as it was defined by Durkheim at the end of the nineteenth century and a look at what the process of integration has been in the recent history shall help us to understand why integration policy has been relatively ineffective. Such policy was developed recently following the partial failure of policies of social integration and cultural assimilation. After becoming effective, the main paths towards integration were seriously weakened by two decades of crisis. The employment market has created a lack of job security and social exclusion. The educational system seems less and less able to convey moral values and common secular rules at the same time as it offers unequal chances of success and social advancement. Growing residential segregation and its ethnic dimension strengthen these negative trends. However, immigrants and their descendants who enjoy a favourable environment succeed in integrating into society and sharing chief republican values. Thus, the process of integration seems largely independent of integration policy but it remained strongly dependant on the local context and on its economic, social and cultural dimensions Integration of immigrants in France: a historical perspective A paradoxical situation France has always been a country of immigration.

A powerful political platform: françoise giroud and l’express in a cold war climate Imogen Long Abstract Founded in 1953 by Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber and Françoise Giroud, L’Express was a politically committed outlet predominantly led by Giroud’s strong editorial direction until its rebranding in 1964 along the lines of Time magazine. Its goals were clear: to encourage modernization in French cultural and economic life, to support Pierre Mendès France and to oppose the war in Indochina. This article investigates Giroud’s vision of the press, her politics and her journalistic dialogue with other significant actors at a complex and pivotal juncture in French Cold War history. Giroud opened up the columns of L’Express to a diverse range of leading writers and intellectuals, even to those in disagreement with the publication, as the case study of Jean-Paul Sartre highlighted here shows. In so doing, Giroud’s L’Express constituted a singularly powerful press platform in Cold War France.
