ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia senior tennis player Emil Reinberg has been selected to represent Team USA in the 13th annual Master’U BNP Paribas International Collegiate Team Competition in Grenoble, France, from Nov. 29-Dec. 2.

With his invitation, Reinberg becomes the fourth UGA athlete to be selected for this tournament, the most recent player being Nathan Pasha in 2014. The United States squad, which won the Master’U BNP Paribas from 2011 to 2016, will compete against seven teams composed of college and university players from around the world.

“This is a great recognition for all the hard work Emil has put in this summer and fall,” Georgia head coach Manny Diaz said. “He is very excited to represent the USA against the very best collegiate players from all over the world. We wish our team the very best.”

The Atlanta native is in the midst of an impressive fall campaign and has recorded four wins over nationally ranked opponents this season. Reinberg recently became the first Bulldog to advance to the ITA All-America Championship semifinals since Travis Helgeson won the singles title in 2007.

Reinberg will join Brandon Holt (USC) and Oliver Crawford (Florida) on the men’s roster for Team USA. On the women’s side, Ashley Lahey (Pepperdine), Jada Hart (UCLA) and Maria Mateas (Duke) will round out the team of six.

Boise State men’s coach Greg Patton and University of California, Berkeley women’s coach Amanda Augustus will travel with and coach the team, which will compete against opposition from Belgium, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Italy. INAUGURAL ‘FIRST SERVE’ A SUCCESS

ATHENS, Ga. — A little over 400 spectators helped the Georgia men’s and women’s tennis teams kick off the 2019 spring season at the inaugural ‘First Serve’ event on Saturday.

Those in attendance were treated to an exhibition that featured both programs. The Red team dominated the Black squad, 7-4, to earn bragging rights for a year. The courts were then flooded with Georgia tennis fans old and young during an hour-long clinic.

“It was just a great event to build excitement for both our tennis programs,” women’s tennis associate head coach Drake Bernstein said. “A lot of fans turned out, which just shows how much tennis means to this community. All of us had a fun time, and it was a perfect way to kick off the upcoming season.”

Longtime University of Georgia and Athens radio personality Jeff Dantzler served as the emcee of the event. He, along with the Georgia coaches, introduced both squads to the fans.

“It was just a really great idea by our associate head coaches Drake Bernstein and Jamie Hunt,” men’s tennis head coach Manuel Diaz said. “It was a wonderful opportunity to interact with our community with so many kids here interested in the sport of tennis. We saw a couple hundred kids out here and all of them were so good and enthusiastic about our sport. It is great to make that connection and hopefully they will come out and support our team.” BOARD APPROVES $8.5 MILLION FACILITY

ATHENS —— A one-year contract extension for J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity, as well as the approval of a new, $8.5 million tennis grandstand at Henry Feild Stadium, were among the prominent topics at the University of Georgia Athletic Association Board of Directors quarterly meeting Wednesday on the UGA campus.

The Board also voted unanimously to allocate $8.5 million toward the new grandstand at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Deputy Athletic Director Josh Brooks presented plans for the grandstand, which will improve the fan experience with better sightlines, permanent concessions, new restroom facilities, and chair back seats in the lower seating area. The project will also include the construction of a new 1750-square foot press box. According to Brooks, construction is scheduled to begin this May and will be completed in February of 2020.

In his Athletic Director’s report, McGarity recognized the culture of ‘’servant leadership’’ within the athletics program at Georgia. He introduced three people as examples of servant leaders, two UGAAA longtime employees and one student-athlete of recent vintage. Senior Associate Athletic Director Glada Horvat and Assistant AD Rhonda Kilpatrick have a combined experience of assisting UGA student-athletes of over 60 years. Horvat and Kilpatrick together oversee many student-related issues, including academics, financial aid, housing, eligibility and international student services. PHILIP HENNING EARNS SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia men’s tennis freshman Philip Henning, who has won five-straight singles matches and is 7-2 overall in doubles this season, has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.

The Bloemfontein, South Africa, native went a perfect 3-0 in singles and doubles last week to earn the honor.

Against No. 15 Tennessee on Friday, he clinched the match with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (2) win against the Vols’ Preston Touliatos at court No. 4. That victory came after he teamed with fellow Bulldog rookie Trent Bryde to clinch the doubles point and give Georgia an early 1-0 lead.

On Sunday against No. 3 Texas, Henning ousted 59th-ranked Harrison Scott, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 for his fifth-straight win of the year. It also gave him his second victory against a ranked opponent this season.

Henning is 9-3 overall this year in singles matches and is part of a Georgia freshman class that has compiled 29 victories dating back to the fall. He and Bryde are currently 3-0 in doubles, playing at both the second and third positions. > A report from one of the three student representatives on the Board: Roya Naghepour, a senior from Roswell, Ga. DUNCAN GRATEFUL TO BE BACK

By John Frierson Staff Writer, GeorgiaDogs.com

Walker Duncan claims that “by no means” is he “an enlightened player and a doubt-free and happy-go-lucky, positive player” after missing most of the past year with back injuries. I’ll partially agree with him on that.

When for months and months you can’t do the thing that you love, and can’t help your team succeed on the court, well, that can change your perspective a bit. And when months into the injury you don’t even know if you’ll ever play competitive tennis again, enlightenment might just come knocking at your door.

“I definitely cherish that time (of being injured) because it made me realize how much I miss the game,” Duncan said earlier this week. “It made me realize that I was not just a tennis player; there’s a lot of identity wrapped up in winning and losing and the lineup and tennis-specific stuff, but the real valuable things from college tennis have been the development of relationships and the time spent pushing each other.

“That’s honestly something that I’m really thankful for and (at the same time) I’m glad that it only lasted as long as it did because I was getting antsy to get back out on the court.”

During his dominant run last season prior to the injury, Duncan was ranked as high as No. 14 in the country in singles and only lost once during the dual-match season before being sidelined. Duncan isn’t back to playing at that level yet, coach Manny Diaz said, but he’s making progress.

“He just seems to be healthier and he’s been playing very hard — I know it’s been at times very frustrating for him because he’s been out for so long and he’s not playing at the caliber he’s accustomed to, so that can get very frustrating,” Diaz said last Sunday, after Duncan cruised to an easy win at No. 6 singles against Texas’ Chin Chi Huang.

“At times his back tightens up and at times his feet are not moving as well as he’s accustomed to having them move — it’s just a little rust. But it’s a big step in the right direction.”

When you’re a freshman, a sophomore and even a junior, the number of matches left in your career can seem infinite, with two or three dozen in the fall and maybe the same number in the spring. When you’re Duncan and you’ve lost so much time, including maybe 30 matches in the fall of your final season, the number of matches left starts to look pretty small.

Including Saturday, there are only 10 matches left in the regular season.

“I think when you put a number on it like that, I might get a little bit nervous or worried about the ones that I lose. But I really would like to learn from those and just enjoy the moments that I have left on the court,” he said. “Hopefully I can just put together a good run for the last few months.”

One thing Duncan learned during his injury was how to be a good, valuable teammate beyond doing his part on the court. When you’re used to helping lead by example, and by being a strong competitor and performer, figuring out how to lead in other ways can be an adjustment.

“At first, I felt like I was just, kind of, dead weight, just another spectator at practice. But ultimately I kind of owned it and knew that if I’m not going to be able to provide on the right now, I need to be the best teammate and captain that I can be, regardless of if I’m playing or not.”

A finance major in the Terry College of Business, Duncan knows about analysis. In August, following the season, graduation and a little relaxation time this summer, he’s moving to New York where he’ll be working for an investment bank and “helping companies buy and sell each other.”

But that’s a little ways off still. For now, he’s enjoying his final semester at Georgia and final stretch playing for the Bulldogs. College tennis is a team sport that’s comprised of a bunch of individual battles, and being a part of a team, this team, is something he’s really come to appreciate over the past four years. GEORGIA ADDS MATEO REYES TO TOP-5 CLASS

ATHENS, Ga. — Mateo Reyes, a top junior tennis player from Florianopolis, Brazil, has signed a national letter of intent with the University of Georgia men’s tennis program, head coach Manuel Diaz announced.

Reyes is the fourth signee of Georgia’s highly-ranked 2019 class. The Brazilian star will join Baptiste Anselmo (Aix-en Provence, France), Erik Grevelius (Stockholm, Sweden) and (Bradenton, Florida) as incoming freshmen, starting with the 2019 fall semester.

This past winter, before the Bulldogs signed Anselmo and Reyes, Georgia’s class was ranked No. 4 nationally according to tennisrecruiting.net.

“We are very excited about the addition of Mateo to our very strong recruiting class of 2019 and beyond,” Diaz said. “Mateo has had some very impressive wins throughout his career and has huge potential. We can’t wait to get him here in Athens to start working with him and help him develop his game even more.”

Reyes earned a career-high International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking of 134 and has a career-best Universal Tennis Rating of 13.39.

Among his career highlights, the left-handed Reyes won the Roland-Garros Junior Wild Card Championship last May with decisive victories over ’s Siddhant Banthia 6-3 6-3 and China’s Xinmu Zhou 6-4, 6-2. Those wins allowed him to play in the main draw of Roland Garros.

Reyes was ranked as high as second in Brazil at the age of 16 before he started playing in ITF events. He won a ITF G5 singles title and took the doubles crown in an ITF G3 event in Brazil. During his senior year, he reached three ITF G1 semifinals.
