His squad picked up the 2009 NCAA Championship toward.” for Smith’s first national title and the 17th — USC head coach Peter Smith overall for the USC men’s tennis program. And if Smith’s early glimpse of the Trojans is anywhere near accurate, well, then there’s another pile of wins out there with USC’s name on it. After all, the Trojans return almost their entire lineup from last season as they enter 2010 as the nation’s top-ranked team. That includes 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year Robert Farah, this season’s No. 1 ranked singles player Steve Johnson, and a talented crew of young talent from USC’s 2009 NCAA lineup in junior Jaak Poldma and sophomores Daniel Nguyen and Matt Kecki. “The first thing that strikes me is that I think we’re better than last year,” Smith said. “I think at some point the experience is going to make a difference, but guys like Daniel Nguyen and Steve Johnson are just much better tennis players than they were a year ago. To compare those guys at this point, there’s almost no comparison. “The great thing about Steve is he will play any position on the team. He just wants the team to win. I’m sure he loves being ranked No. 1, but if he played No. 4 on our team, that would be alright with him. And it’s the same with Rob. I’m so fortunate to have those guys, who only want the team to be successful. And they’re one of the best doubles team and two of the best singles players. It makes a coach’s job that much easier.” Selfless AND better than ever? It’s a scary thought for opponents. USC could be scary-good this year. “I just feel fortunate,” Smith said. “They’re great kids, and that’s the lifeblood of any great team. It says it all when you have three freshmen (Johnson, Kecki and Nguyen) in the starting lineup and you win NCAAs. We can do some special stuff this year.” The lone hit to USC’s 2009 lineup is graduated Abdullah Magdas, who was a clutch player for the Trojans in both doubles and singles throughout the run to the national title. In order to help fill that void, Smith has three newcomers to the roster – freshmen Joel Giger and JT Sundling and Dutch transfer SENIOR ALL-AMERICAN ROBERT FARAH Peter Lucassen. “We added great players in JT and Peter,” Smith said. “I think they’re both guys that will be somewhere 2010 POSTSEASON 2010 NCAA Regionals 2010 Pac-10 May 14-16, Championships Sites To Be Determined Thursday-Sunday, April 22-25, . at Ojai, Calif. 2010 NCAA Championships Thursday-Monday, May 21-31 Dan Magill Tennis Complex • Athens, Georgia Hosted by Univ. of Georgia 2010 USC Men's Tennis Media Guide • 2 • OUTLOOK / PRESEASON RANKINGS 2010 CAMPBELL/ITA Preseason Rankings TEAM RANKINGS (Jan. 5) 1. DAVID X. MARKS TENNIS STADIUM

The David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on the USC campus is one of the finest collegiate tennis facilities in the country. During winter of 2006, a sixth court was added to the main stadium, allowing for dual-match competition to be played out entirely in front of fans within the 1,000-seat venue. A new and much-anticipated addition was made in May 2005 with the installa- tion of a $300,000 LED Daktronic interactive scoreboard. Fans can now follow each match point-for-point from their stadium seat and online at www.usctrojans.com. The stadium also underwent renovations during the summer of 2002. Seven hundred chair-back seats were added to replace the bleachers on the baselines and the courts were all repainted and lined. Two of the courts are named after famous USC alumni and Wimbledon singles champions, and . The center court is named for USC’s 13 Grand Slam doubles champions — Byron Black, Bob Falkenburg, , Murphy Jensen, Rick Leach, Bob Lutz, , Olmedo, , , Raul Ramirez, and Smith. Underneath the stadium is the beautiful Leonard Andrews Varsity Lounge and Team Room, along with two locker rooms. The locker rooms also have been renovated through a generous gift made by John and Michelle Katnik of Diversified Development. Each lockerroom features the program’s recent conference champi- onship trophies, Hall of Fame walls with past NCAA singles and doubles champions, as well as the men’s and women’s national championship trophies. At the entrance to the stadium is a list of all 16 of the USC men’s national champion years and seven women’s tennis national championships, including a newly-added 2002 for last year’s men’s tennis title squad. The stadium was dedicated in 1973 when former Trojan stars Alex Olmedo, Stan Smith, Dennis Ralston and Bob Lutz held a tennis exhibition. The 1974 men’s NCAA Tournament was held at Marks Stadium (USC finished second).

7th Man Club In 2005, the 7th Man Club was established as a student-run organization created to promote the success of USC tennis and instill a sense of pride in one of USC’s oldest and most prolific athletic programs. The high energy of the 7th Man Club members alongside the intimate setting of Marks Tennis Stadium creates an unrivaled homefield advantage. For a $5 fee, members can combine the tennis action with food, drinks, shirts, and prizes at all of the highlighted 7th Man matches.

USC’s 2009 inductees to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men’s Collegiate Hall of Fame bumped the Trojans’ nation-leading count of hall-of-famers to 18. The addition of Byron Black, Wayne Black and Bruce Manson in 2009 marked the fifth time that multiple Trojans have been inducted in the same Hall of Fame class and the third time that at least three players from USC were inducted together. Before the trio of Trojans were added in 2009, Tom Edlefsen was the latest USC player to be inducted, joining the group in 2006 as USC’s 15th Hall of Famer. The last batch of multiple Trojan inductees came in the Class Byron Black Wayne Black Bruce Manson of 2003, which was headlined by USC’s Bill Bond, Dick Leach and Robert Van’t Hof, as well as George M. Church of Princeton, Bob McKinley of Trin- ity (Texas) and longtime NCAA Referee Jim Russell. Church was inducted posthumously. Players are eligible for election to the ITA Hall of Fame 15 years after their last collegiate match and coaches are eligible following retirement. The main criteria for election are college accomplishments as well as honors earned after college. College tennis legend Dan Magill serves as curator for the ITA Hall of Fame, which is housed at the University of Georgia. The ITA Men’s Tennis Hall of Fame, which includes over 1,800 rare photos, was inaugurated in 1983 and has inducted more than 160 players, coaches and contributors. Members include the late (UCLA), (UCLA), John McEnroe (Stanford) and Stan Smith (USC). The ITA Women’s Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame is located at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
