Freud describes the transference variously as suggestion, repetition, resistance, love, and, finally, as all of the above. He did however reject the term “suggestion” very early on, preferring to speak of “transference.” He did this for two reasons: first, whatever the force behind hypnosis, Freud wanted to distinguish it from the forces at work in psychoanalysis; second and more importantly, the catch-all phrase, “suggestion,” appealed to as explanation of all phenomena of influence, including not just psychoanalysis but hypnosis as well, was far too vague a term and served no real explanatory power. Moreover, we know that the suggestibility of the hypnotized patient, or at least the efficacity of the suggestion, depends upon the existence of a strong transference of the subject to the hypnotist. The term “transference,” “Übertragung,” first appears in Freud’s work in The Interpretation of Dreams, though Strachey translates it as “transcript.”1 Freud describes how dreams are constructed out of the day's residues, that is, the insignificant and trivial memories that remain from the day preceding the dream itself. A botanical monograph glimpsed in the window of a bookshop the day before becomes a dream about Freud’s successes and failures, including his near discovery of the medicinal powers of cocaine. The dream strips these memories of their original meaning and reinvests them with new meaning. This is “transference,” the transference of sense or meaning, in accordance with unconscious desire which thus disguises itself in otherwise innocent representations. Desire expresses itself through the medium of those representations which are acceptable by virtue of their very banality, seizing forms that have little value in themselves and that function in the dream separated from their initial meaning. The first appearance of the transference in Freud is therefore bound up with the general process of the formations of the unconscious—not only dreams but also slips of the tongue and pen, the forgetting of names, and bungled actions, as well as symptoms. Freud later gives “transference” a more narrow meaning, applying it to a phenomenon that he first ebcoems aware of within the analytic discourse, whereby desire becomes attached to something quite specific, the person of the analyst. But the connection with the early use in The Interpretation of Dreams is not merely verbal, for desire attaches not so much to the person as to the signifier of the analyst. The signifier of the analyst is a position within the analytic 1 discourse occupied by the analyst as person, but with which he should neither be identified nor, as we shall see, identify himself. There are further grounds for drawing this distinction between the analyst as person, in flesh and blood, and the analyst as signifier, as place within the transference relation. For one thing, if as Freud says the transference bears all the hallmarks of being in love we need to ask why it occurs more or less automatically, when falling in love requires that the object of one’s love possess such precise characteristics, that are so specific to each person. Lacan puts it this way in his first Seminar, on Freud’s papers on technique: How can a transference be so easily generated in neurotics, when they are so fettered when it comes to love? The production of a transference has an absolutely universal character, truly automatic, whereas the demands of love are, on the contrary, as everyone knows, so specific.2 We can now point out one general feature of the transference: the transference is the point at which the analyst as signifier becomes the object of the analysand's desire. There are two observations I would like to draw to your attention at this point. The first, which I take from Jacques-Alain Miller, is that the analyst is internal to the unconscious, not external to it. This is an observation we ultimately need to appeal to to explain a number of readily observable phenomena. It explains, for instance, the fact that the analysand frequently dreams for the analyst, or, as Freud observed, “the symptoms join in the conversation.” The analyst's implication in the unconscious means that there is no vantage point outside the transference, accessible to the analyst, from which it would be possible to objectively observe the analysand. The analyst is called into question just as much as the analysand. As in most of these things, Freud gives the clearest illustration of this in his own case studies; we can learn as much about Freud from the case studies as from The Interpretation of Dreams. What these observations on the transference point to is an acknowledgment that there is a place in the subject's “inner world” that the analyst comes to occupy. Most and probably all psychoanalytic theories recognize this, for in acknowledging that the transference is the driving force of an analysis, there is an implicit recognition that the analyst's position is a formation of the unconscious. The differences of opinion on this subject tend to be over what this place is that the analyst comes, or should come, to occupy. 2 The second point is this. Freud had discovered that formations of the unconscious could be deciphered and that symptoms could sometimes be lifted by this deciphering. But the transference came as a surprise, and an uncomfortable one at that. It came as a surprise to discover that the analyst appears to hold a special interest for the analysand, to occupy his thoughts, and perhaps even become his love object. In its early days the psychoanalytic method could have been regarded as applied hermeneutics, since symptoms were shown to have a hidden meaning which when deciphered and conveyed to the subject would cause a symptom to disappear. This was the truly golden age of psychoanalysis, when a walk with Professor Freud in the garden after lunch was enough to conjure away a troublesome symptom. The age soon passed, as we know, and Freud was led to the analysis of the resistance, that is, of the subject's refusal to admit the hidden meaning of his symptom. This difficulty in getting the analysand to acknowledge the meaning, sometimes even the existence, of symptoms also led to the belief that a force has to be overcome before symptoms could be removed. It was as if the unconscious had made itself less accessible to analysis, to the point where the various modifications in technique Freud introduced were made necessary by an evolution in the nature of the unconscious itself. There is something charmingly innocent nowadays in many of the symptoms described in the early Studies on Hysteria and a guilelessness in their interpretation-for instance, the hysteric's shortness of breath as a symptom associated with overhearing the mounting excitement of a couple making love. Now, in following up Freud's discovery that because the transference, far from making the analysand a willing collaborator in the task of deciphering his own text, is actually a form of resistance, the post-Freudians came to the conclusion, in one way or another, that what mattered above all was to regard analysis as an interpersonal relationship, an intersubjectivity that was only incidentally, and not essentially, mediated by language. This is, I believe, the fundamental point shared by those techniques that aim at analyzing the resistance, at the development of empathy, or at the countertransference. Lacan, on the other hand, is widely regarded as holding the exact opposite of this view, namely that it is language, or the signifier, that is paramount in analysis. One can see why Lacan has been read, in the English-speaking world particularly, as promoting the function of the signifier in psychoanalysis-not least because for a long time Lacan himself emphasized this very aspect. There is however something else Lacan emphasizes equally strongly, even more strongly in his later work, namely the object. And we need to discuss both aspects. To return to the point I was making before, which was that Freud introduced modifications in technique because of an evolution in the nature of the 3 unconscious, it can be argued that both the unconscious and symptoms have a history. This is difficult to reconcile with the claim that the unconscious is an instinctual reservoir, but quite simple to understand if it is essentially linguistic in nature. Further, it can be argued that the unconscious is essentially a discourse, and not merely structured like a language, and that with changes in the nature of this discourse, the nature of interpretation itself was also forced to undergo modifications. Now, symptoms undergo not only historical change, but when an analysand enters analysis, their symptoms will all take on a new meaning. Freud observed this phenomenon under the name of transference-meaning, Übertragungsbedeutung.

The small circle of Cambridge undergraduates whose mutual appreciation of the thoughts and teachings of the academic and philosopher G.E. Moore led them to form lasting friendships, became the kernel of what would become labelled ‘the Bloomsbury Group’. It was, as one academic described, ‘a nucleus from which civilisation has spread outwards’.2 This rippling effect, though tem- porarily dammed by the keenly-felt constrictions of the war, would continue to flow outwards through the twentieth century, inspiring, as is well known, much analysis and interpretation along the way.

This assignment of the apparently contradictory attributes of visibility and invisibility to object a is a reflection of this object’s strange position at the intersection of transcendental and empirical dimensions. Indeed, this object, which Lacan holds up as his central psychoanalytic discovery, raises important philosophical questions about the transcendental- empirical distinction, arguably short-circuiting in interesting, productive ways this dichotomy and many of its permutations.     PROBLEMI INTERNATIONAL, vol.On 1 no.Ambivalence 1, 2017 © Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis On Ambivalence Tadej Troha The term “ambivalence” was coined a little over hundred years ago by Eugen Bleuler, the then director of Burghölzli, who despite sympathizing with psychoanalysis refrained from becoming a genuine part of the emerging Freudian collective body. In the end, his insistence on maintaining his individuality produced an ironic twist: while Freud (and Jung, for that matter) became popular authors, Bleuler was left with the impossible trophy of being the author of popular signifiers, the author of terms that seem to have appeared out of nowhere: in addition to ambivalence, he ought to be credited for inventing “autism” and “schizophrenia.” It is well known that Freud was not very enthusiastic about the latter terms and kept insisting on paraphrenia and narcissism, respectively. As for ambivalence, he accepted it immediately and without hesitation. When introduced in Freud’s essays, ambiva- lence is accompanied with a whole series of laudatory remarks: the term is glücklich, gut, passend, trefflich, “happily chosen” (Freud 2001 [1905], p. 199), “excellent” (Freud 2001 [1912], p. 106), “appropriate” (Freud 2001 [1909], p. 239n), “very apt” (Freud 2001 [1915], p. 131). Although he rarely fails to point out that he is not the author of the term, he never bothers to present the reader with the particular clinical framework within which the term has been invented. The praise of the author is here transformed into the praise of the term itself, the quotation does not add anything to Bleuler’s authority; it is rather an excuse to repeatedly point to the authority and breakthrough nature of the 217 Tadej Troha very conceptual background that made the invention possible.

Smith Félix Guattari met Gilles Deleuze in Paris shortly after written between 1969 and 1972, addressed to Deleuze, the events of May 1968, through a mutual friend.     Staircase, Berggasse 19, Vienna 2017 344 The Dream— an Imaging Process Monika Pessler As Sigmund Freud observes in The Interpretation of Dreams, «dreams think 345 essentially in images,» and while noises and sounds can at times make their ways into our imaginations, our dream-lives generally favor the visual.1 According to Freud, visual hallucinations replace the expression of thoughts in the form of language because dreams are characterized by «only those elements of their content which behave like images.»2 Another characteristic the psychoanalyst attributes to dreams, and one which is equally inherent to the arts, is an ability to «construct,» to represent an event that is «actually happening,» or to «dramatize an idea.»3 As such, Freud’s characterizations equally apply to artistic modes of rep- resentation: in particular conceptual art, which above all serves to visualize an idea. Greater significance is generally attached to the concept than to its rep- resentation—similar to psychoanalysis, which regards latent thoughts in the unconscious important components which manifest themselves dream images. Just consider Freud’s dictum that subjectively perceived «psychical reality» is more important than «material reality,» in other words, that psychically com- municated realities generally appear more factual than those regarded by the environment as given.4 Freud’s rejection of the «seduction theory» strengthened his awareness that mental ideas, fantasies, outstrip the factual, and are responsible for producing psychosomatic symptoms,5 and thus the formation of the dream itself is like- wise driven by «wish[es] from the unconscious.»6 In an effort to support its associative potential, art is conditioned on con- scious action.

    A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PSYCHOANALYTICAL SOCIETY Ken Robinson When Ernest Jones set about establishing psychoanalysis in Britain, two intertwining tasks faced him: establishing the reputation of psychoanalysis as a respectable pursuit and defining an identity for it as a discipline that was distinct from but related to cognate disciplines. This latter concern with identity would remain central to the development of the British Society for decades to come, though its inflection would shift as the Society sought first to mark out British psychoanalysis as having its own character within the International Psychoanalytical Association, and then to find a way of holding together warring identities within the Society. Establishing Psychoanalysis: The London Society Ernest Jones’ diary for 1913 contains the simple entry for October 30: “Ψα meeting. Psycho-med. dinner” (Archives of the British Psychoanalytical Society, hereafter Archives). This was the first meeting of the London Psychoanalytical Society. In early August Jones had returned to London from ignominious exile in Canada after damaging accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct in relation to children. Having spent time in London and Europe the previous year, he now returned permanently, via Budapest where from June he had received analysis from Ferenczi. Once in London he wasted no time in beginning practice as a psychoanalyst, seeing his first patient on the 14th August (Diary 1913, Archives), though he would soon take a brief break to participate in what would turn out to be a troublesome Munich Congress in September (for Jones’s biography generally, see Maddox [2006]). Jones came back to a London that showed a growing interest in unconscious phenomena and abnormal psychology.

Based on reading the text of Lytton Strachey: The New Biography, this paper analyzes Lytton Strachey’s most distinct character - rebel combined with the social background and the theory of “the New Biography” in three aspects. First, Strachey’s rebellious character in his daily life is analyzed. His beating falsetto, ironic tone and ambiguous silence make him mysterious; his unique dressing style makes him different in the Victorian Age when people tended to wear similar clothes with others in dark suits; and at this time people were all optimistic because of their powerful country while Strachey was always surrounded by a mysterious pessimistic air. Second, Strachey’s view of love is analyzed. He had a strong tendency of homosexual and most of his lovers in his life were males. While, in the Victorian Age, homosexual was illegal.     Critique of Planned Obsolescence: Marx and Freud in Latin America bruno bosteels cornell university oday, the least that we can say about Marxism is that, if it were not for the Tuse of attenuating prefixes such as ‘‘post’’ or ‘‘neo,’’ its mere mention has become an unmistakable sign of obsolescence. Thus, while in second-hand book- stores from Mexico City to Tierra del Fuego, the old manuals of historical and dialectical materialism from the Soviet Academy of Sciences keep piling up, almost nobody really seems to be referring to Marxism anymore as a vital doc- trine of political or historical intervention. Rather, Marx and Marxism in the eyes of the not-so-silent majority have become things from the past. In the best scenarios, they simply constitute an object for nostalgic or academic commemo- rations; in the worst, they occupy the bench of the accused in the world-historical tribunal for the trial of crimes against humanity. A´ lvaro Garcı´a Linera, the current Vice-President of Bolivia under Evo Morales, in an important text from 1996, written from prison where he was being held under maximum security rule on charges of subversive and terrorist activity, a text titled ‘‘Tres retos al marxismo para encarar el nuevo milenio’’ (‘‘Three Chal- lenges for Marxism to Face the New Millenium’’) and included in the collective volume Las armas de la utopı´a. Marxismo: Provocaciones here´ticas (The Arms of Utopia. Marxism: Heretical Provocations), describes the situation as follows: Yesterday’s rebels who captivated the poor peasants with the fury of their subversive language, today find themselves at the helm of daz- zling private companies and NGOs that continue to ride the martyred backs of the same peasants previously summoned.
