Straddling (In)Visibility: Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture Sasha Cocarla A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy in Women's Studies Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa © Sasha Cocarla, Ottawa, Canada 2016 Abstract Throughout the first decade of the 2000s, LGBTQ+ visibility has steadily increased in North American popular culture, allowing for not only more LGBTQ+ characters/figures to surface, but also establishing more diverse and nuanced representations and storylines. Bisexuality, while being part of the increasingly popular phrase of inclusivity (LGBTQ+), however, is one sexuality that not only continues to be overlooked within popular culture but that also continues to be represented in limited ways. In this doctoral thesis I examine how bisexual women are represented within mainstream popular culture, in particular on American television, focusing on two, popular programs (The L Word and the Shot At Love series). These texts have been chosen for popularity and visibility in mainstream media and culture, as well as for how bisexual women are unprecedentedly made central to many of the storylines (The L Word) and the series as a whole (Shot At Love). This analysis provides not only a detailed historical account of bisexual visibility but also discusses bisexuality thematically, highlighting commonalities across bisexual representations as well as shared themes between and with other identities. By examining key examples of bisexuality in popular culture from the first decade of the twenty- first century, my research investigates how representations of bisexuality are often portrayed in conversation with hegemonic understandings of gender and sexuality, specifically highlighting the mainstream "gay rights" movement's narrative of "normality" and "just like you" politics.

As I sat watching the wedding of Kevin and Scotty on Brothers & Sisters, I was moved by the grav- ity of the moment. Never before had two leading gay characters wed on a broadcast network. Watching them, I saw myself, a member of the gay community, reflected on television. Just four days after the episode aired, the Califor- nia Supreme Court handed down its decision extending marriage in the state to gay and lesbian couples. Progress is happeningI everywhere we look. As we can see in the country’s current cultural and political shift, that progress doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are portrayed in a fair, accurate and inclusive manner on televi- sion, hearts and minds are changed. The more accurately the diversity of our community is reflected, the more opportunities there are for understanding and acceptance. In addition to Kevin and Scotty’s wedding, Brothers & Sisters featured Saul, one of the rare images of a gay character over 60. Transgender characters are appearing as regular and recurring characters in honest and nuanced story arcs on Ugly Betty, Dirty Sexy Money and The L Word. Young adult shows like GREEK and South of Nowhere, as well as the daytime drama As the World Turns feature multi-dimensional gay teen characters that go to school, live their lives, date and, yes, kiss. These portrayals make all the difference in making the lives of LGBT people real to TV viewers across the country.

  • Well If There's One Benefit, You're Not Going to Get Pregnant
“WELL IF THERE’S ONE BENEFIT, YOU’RE NOT GOING TO GET PREGNANT”: A QUALITATIVE INVESTIGATION OF THE SEX EDUCATION THAT GAY, LESBIAN, AND BISEXUAL INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED by Michelle L. Estes A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Masters of Arts in Sociology Middle Tennessee State University May 2016 Thesis Committee: Dr. Gretchen R. Webber, Chair Dr. Jackie L. Eller Dr. Meredith H. Dye This is dedicated to the youth who feel invisible in their sex education classes. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my family for all the love and support they provided throughout this whole process. I do not know where I would be without them. I would also like to thank the Sociology department faculty, my committee, and especially Dr. Webber who provided critical feedback and guidance for this project and my entire time in the program. Thank you to my participants who took the time to participate in this project. Finally to my graduate cohort, thank you for the constant support, encouragement, and push I needed, especially on the hard days. I am forever grateful for each and every one of you. iii ABSTRACT Despite growing attention to gay and lesbian concerns, today’s current sex education curriculum in schools and families is still centered upon heterosexuality. Those studies that examine family sex communication and school-based sex education commonly reflect and take place within a heterosexual context as well. This largely ignores the perspective of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 10 self-identified lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) young adults between the ages of 19-25, this study explores what these individuals learn when it comes to sex education in school and in the home.

Due to the relatively low number of gay female characters on television, these characters must represent an entire population in a way that straight characters do not, which is very problematic. This thesis discusses and analyzes various patterns I have observed, including “lesbians” dating men, lesbian femininity, and tragic lesbian love, in popular television shows such as Roseanne, All My Children, Ellen, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grey’s Anatomy, Glee, and Pretty Little Liars. It also acknowledges representations of gay women that are positive and redeeming, and suggests strategies and solutions for how these representations could be improved upon in the future. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS List of Figures ......................................................................................................................... iii List of Tables ..........................................................................................................................
