IDEACITY WORLDS IN COLLISION Front cover artwork by Santtu Mustonen WORDS FROM MOSES I was always the youngest guy in the room; then one day I wasn’t. Today I am King of the Zoomers, in part because of the celebrity I achieved as a provider of youth culture on television in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Focused on politics, history, the classics, the Bible (in Hebrew) and the Tragic LIFE IS A SERIES History of My People, I had a very traditional education: no science, little math, no commerce – quite unworldly. Talk about Worlds In Collision. When I got to Canada in 1948, I was an exotic item: a refugee, and an immigrant, OF COLLISIONS English-speaking Jew in Christian Canada and French-speaking Quebec. But today I’m just another white guy. More Worlds In Collision. When I came to television, I brought a NewStyle born of economic necessity WITH THE FUTURE; and a preference for real-time naturalism, together with the new and cheaper technologies that enabled them. My company’s videographers were a TV extension of cinéma vérité; and Speakers Corner, a video booth physically attached to our buildings, IT IS NOT THE SUM was a harbinger of user-generated content such as YouTube. But today, most of us in the rich world have a complete production and publishing system in our phones. Thus, I straddle the Analog / Digital divide. I like the “old” media, and I believe OF WHAT WE HAVE that there are still many creative things to be done with them. So, along with the many little and personal collisions that mark any life, I find myself also living out the larger drama of the relentless evolution of technology, trying to make a place for BEEN, BUT WHAT new ideas, techniques and products, but determined also not to let the good things already here wither away. The Digital Utopians that I have admired and championed and presented on WE YEARN TO BE. this stage have often predicted the death of the things I love, sometimes in ways that seem wasteful and heartless. As with all new inventions, there are consequences, JOSÉ ORTEGA Y GASSET often unintended, often severe; but, also invariably, there’s no going back. So what to do? How do we get there from here? How can we recognize the benefits among the flotsam and jetsam of theseWorlds In Collision? To answer these and similar questions, we are this year breaking away from our usual format to kick off ideacity 2018 with a “Great Debate” on the promises and perils of digital technology and culture.
