As a part of our effort, we have joined with the Southern California Olympians, an organization of over 1,000 women and men who have participated on Olympic teams, to develop an oral history of these distinguished athletes. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. She is the most famous female swimmer of Roman legend. 216 A.D. - The Baths of Caracalla, regarded as the greatest architectural and engineering feat of the Roman Empire and the largest bathing/swimming complex ever built opens. Swimming in the public bath houses was as much a part of Roman life as drinking wine. At first, bathing was segregated by gender, with no mixed male and female bathing, but by the mid second century, men and women bathed together in the nude, which lead to the baths becoming notorious for sexual activities. 600 A.D. - With the gothic conquest of Rome and the destruction of the Aquaducts that supplied water to the public baths, the baths close. Soon bathing and nudity are associated with paganism and be- come regarded as sinful activities by the Roman Church. 1200’s - Thinking it might be a useful skill, European sailors relearn to swim and when they do it, it is in the nude. Women, as the gatekeepers of public morality don’t swim because they have no acceptable swimming garments. -

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada DE-6 (2/88) Abstract This thesis considers the perceived athleticism of synchronized swimming by looking at the implications of representations of Esther Williams and "pretty swimming" in popular culture, the allocation of space for women's sport in a local public swimming pool, and an inaugural championship event. Focusing on the first British Columbia (BC) synchronized swimming championships, which were held on February 5, 1949 at Crystal Pool in Vancouver, it shows that images of synchronized swimming as "entertainment" facilitated the development of a new arena of competition for BC women, but that this was accompanied, in effect, by a trivialization of the accomplishments of organizers and athletes. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission November 22, 2016, Designation List 490 LP-2557 SHELTON HOTEL, 525 Lexington Avenue (aka 523-527 Lexington Avenue, 137-139 East 48th Street, 136-140 East 49th Street), Manhattan Built: 1922-23; architect, Arthur Loomis Harmon Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan, Tax Map Block 1303, Lot 53 On July 19, 2016 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Shelton Hotel and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 4). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of the law. A representative of the owner spoke in favor of the designation acknowledging the building’s architectural and cultural importance. There were five other speakers in support of the designation including representatives of Borough President Gale Brewer, Community Board 6, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, the Historic Districts Council, and the Municipal Arts Society. A representative of the Real Estate Board of New York spoke in opposition to the designation. A representative of Council Member Daniel Garodnick submitted written testimony in support of the designation. Two other individuals have also submitted emails in support of the designation. Summary Designed by architect Arthur Loomis Harmon and completed in 1923, the Shelton Hotel was one of the first “skyscraper” residential hotels. With its powerful massing it played an important role in the development of the skyscraper in New York City. Located on the east side of Lexington Avenue between 48th and 49th Streets, it is one of the premiere hotels constructed along the noted “hotel alley” stretch of Lexington Avenue, which was built as part of the redevelopment of this section of East Midtown that followed the opening of Grand Central Terminal and the Lexington Avenue subway line. -

SHARING INSIGHTS From the desk of Ryan Lance Chairman & CEO AS THE HOUSTON AREA RECOVERS from the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, I continue to be impressed by the incredible compassion and resilience of our ConocoPhillips workforce. We are forging ahead on many fronts, including the completion of this special issue of spirit Magazine featuring the annual SPIRIT of Performance Awards. One of the most important responsibilities of my job is meeting with ConocoPhillips employees and listening to their ideas and concerns. During the past quarter, I visited China, Malaysia and Indonesia and saw the amazing work our people are doing on projects such as additional development phases at the Peng Lai field in Bohai Bay; production rampup and an active exploration program in Malaysia; and an initiative to sell more gas in Indonesia. During a visit to Alaska, I heard excitement around our Willow discovery in the National Petroleum Reserve and the active upcoming winter drilling campaign. In July, the company’s board of directors joined me on a visit to our Bakken operations in North Dakota, where the team patiently answered all our questions and showed why ConocoPhillips is recognized as an operator of choice in that important region.
