In more recent times, the Reds have been top dogs when it comes to this fixture, winning 20 of the 49 games between the sides since the formation of the Premier League, with 19 draws. But it hasn’t all been doom and gloom for the men from Goodison Park. There have been some good times, too! So here’s a rundown of the top five Everton derby moments since the turn of the century. Disagree? Have your say in the comments section below! 5) Cahill silences Anfield For some, this may rank higher, for others, they’d rather see Jagielka’s name here instead. But Tim Cahill’s last ditch goal at the Anfield Road end not only salvaged an Everton point in a game that looked to have been settled 20 minutes earlier with a Steven Gerrard strike, but also denied Liverpool a place at the head of the Premier League table, delivering a blow to their title hopes. https://royalbluemersey.sbnation.com/2015/10/1/9431041/topfiveevertonmerseysidederbymoments 1/6 6/21/2017 Everton's Top Five Merseyside Derby games since 2000 Royal Blue Mersey As it turned out, Liverpool went on to lose out to Manchester United by four points – Cahill’s flickon header at the near post certainly contributed to that. It was the first of three Merseyside derby fixtures in twoandahalf weeks, and not a bad way to get things going. Tim Cahill Vs Liverpool Recommended Football Blogs Introducing Everton A brief history Everton info & honours More Excellent Everton Blogs 4) Arteta and Cahill add to Hodgson’s woes When Everton chants of "Going down, going down, going down," are directed at Liverpool, you know things are going well. It was the narrative of the Gwladys Street crescendo, as goals from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta either side of half time condemned a dire Roy Hodgson team to defeat. Overall, it was a comfortable game for the Blues. Liverpool were already reeling after a poor start to the season and Everton took full advantage. One highlight was Yakubu barging a hapless Raul Meireles to the floor, before Timmy the blue kangaroo put the hosts one goal to the good with a smashing effort. Arteta wrapped up proceedings shortly after half time, converting a shot following a short clearance from a corner against quite possibly the poorest Liverpool side in some time. After all, the majority of thEev ewrtoant cinhfoin &g h onnaoutirosn missed the only goal of a fourthround FA Cup replay thanks to an ITV blunder which saw More Excellent Everton Blogs Dan Gosling’s last minute strike replaced by an advert for Tic Tac mints. Not to worry, because the 40,000 strong inside Goodison Park saw it, and the cameras came back in time to record the wild celebrations inside the Old Lady. It took two 90 minute games and almost a full half hour of extra time to separate the two teams, but Everton finally managed to put Liverpool to the sword and go on a run that saw the Toffees go all the way to the final. Dan Gosling’s goal helped propel one of the best Everton seasons in the past two decades. Everton 1 0 Liverpool FA Cup 2) The Carsley derby The occasion was the 200th Merseyside Derby, it was exactly two weeks before Christmas and Everton had the chance to go second in the Premier League with a win over rivals Liverpool. It seemed destined to go wrong for Everton, but untypically it didn’t. https://royalbluemersey.sbnation.com/2015/10/1/9431041/topfiveevertonmerseysidederbymoments 3/6 6/21/2017 Everton's Top Five Merseyside Derby games since 2000 Royal Blue Mersey The game wasn’t really that good. There were a few chances here and there, but nothing that spectacular (perhaps aside from Cahill’s header from six yards out). Then came the goal. Liverpool headed clear an Everton attack, but only as far as Marcus Bent who played in Leon Osman. But there was nowhere to go, only the option to lay it off to Lee Carsley. The rest, as they say, is history. Anyone for a pileyon? Recommended Football Blogs EVERTON 1-0 LIVERPOOL 2004. carsley. Introducing Everton A brief history Everton info & honours More Excellent Everton Blogs 1) Liverpool drop the ball as Everton net three It doesn’t get much better than beating Liverpool, but doing so comfortably is the icing on the cake. It was a day where derby nerves were dispelled quickly, rather than dragging on as per usual, and Andy Johnson had his finest display in the royal blue jersey. Everton were two up at the half, and although any cushion never seems to be enough, there was an overwhelming feeling that Liverpool were never going to get back into the game that day. It was pretty much summed up when, towards the end of the game, Pepe Reina decided to assist Johnson rather than let his momentum carry the ball over the line to make it a triumphant 30. It was the biggest Everton margin of victory in a Merseyside derby since the days of Harry Catterick, and a fine derby performance. • Global Game, Local Identity: the Social Production of Football Space in Liverpool
GLOBAL GAME, LOCAL IDENTITY: THE SOCIAL PRODUCTION OF FOOTBALL SPACE IN LIVERPOOL DANIEL EVANS A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO August, 2014 © Daniel Evans, 2014 ii Abstract Based on participant observation of matches and interviews with key informants in Liverpool, UK, this thesis sets out the situation of the globalized English Premier League and its consequences for football (soccer) fandom in Liverpool. I am looking at both the reliance on and resistance to a tourist based consumption of the game. Using a Lefebvrian theoretical framework I analyze how football space is created in Liverpool and how the supporters’ groups of different teams in the city work to both globalize and glocalize the football culture of the city, and are looking to reshape their relationship with football’s current economic and cultural space. As Liverpool increasingly relies on a tourist-based economy with sport as its focus, it is altering the relationship between supporters and their clubs, and with other fans. The monitoring of fan performances by both authorities and other fans can be considered through Foucauldian conceptions of power to continuously shift the dynamics between different groups of supporters. iii Acknowledgements As I spend much of this thesis discussing the formation of social groups and the importance of community, I must acknowledge the many people that helped me in the creation of this work. First, my informants, who helped me understand the football world in Liverpool: Paul Gallagher, Jay McKenna, John Bennett, Andrew Sherlock, Ros Merkin, James Benson, Mike Humphries, Chris Stirrup, Feargal McAvoy, and Steve Kelley.

  • 13 March 2012 Opposition: Everton Competition
13 March2012 13 Date: 13 March 2012 Telegraph Echo Opposition: Everton Mirror Mail Independent Guardian Competition: League Captain's inspirational lead lifts Liverpool out of the doldrums It is galling enough to be beaten in a derby fixture, but Everton found themselves contributing to the sort of high spirits that had gone missing at Anfield. The glee for the home side was enhanced by the fact that a hat-trick for their captain, Steven Gerrard, was completed in stoppage time. There were other causes of concern for Everton on the night, particularly in the shape of the elusive Luis Suarez, who set up that concluding goal. The motivation was great for the Uruguayan and everyone else in the lineup as they strove to make amends for recent shortcomings. No Liverpool player had notched a hat-trick in this fixture since Ian Rush claimed four goals at Goodison in 1982. Gerrard will cherish this occasion, but the jubilation may have practical benefits as well. The victors needed 90 minutes of this sort to make their way out of the doldrums. Kenny Dalglish's players will have left the ground feeling more sure of themselves than they have in weeks. By the close, it was impossible to believe that Liverpool had endured three consecutive defeats in the Premier League before this match. By the end they had equalled their highest score of the league campaign. Everton are usually outstanding in battling their limitations, but there was a technique and deadliness to Liverpool that could not be resisted. If the victors have any anxieties at all they will lie in the fear that Suarez might prefer to move to another country to earn a living after that eight-game ban for racial abuse of Patrice Evra.
