Form guide • No team has scored more than once in any of LOSC's five previous home contests against English sides (W2 D2 L1); encouragingly, they beat their most recent Premier League visitors – Everton's neighbours Liverpool FC – 1-0 in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 16. • LOSC are without a win in five European fixtures (D3 L2) since starting the campaign with a 2-0 away win against Grasshopper Club. Trivia and links • Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas started his professional career with LOSC (2004-08), and also played in Ligue 1 with AS Saint-Étienne. • LOSC's Belgian forward Divock Origi is technically a Liverpool FC player; he returned to LOSC on loan after joining the club in a €10m move this summer. • LOSC's Marcos Lopes is on loan from another Premier League club, Manchester City FC, while their Czech defender David Rozehnal played in England with Newcastle United FC (2007-08). • The Toffees also boast French talent in the form of defender Sylvain Distin, who – like Rozehnal – is a former Paris Saint-Germain player. • Everton's Samuel Eto'o has scored 48 UEFA club competition goals – more than any other player in this season's group stage. • The return leg of this fixture – on 6 November – will be LOSC's 100th UEFA club competition game. Their record in their first 98 has been W39 D31 L28. The coaches • As a midfielder, LOSC coach René Girard won three titles and two French Cups with FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the 1980s. After a long spell coaching national age-group teams, he won Ligue 1 as Montpellier Hérault SC boss in 2011/12, moving to Lille in July 2013. • Everton's attack-minded Spanish manager Roberto Martínez was a fine midfielder in the English lower leagues with the likes of Wigan Athletic FC and Swansea City AFC, and coached both clubs with great success, notably winning the 2012/13 FA Cup with the Latics before taking charge of Everton in June 2013. 3 LOSC Lille - Everton FC Thursday 23 October 2014 - 19.00CET (19.00 local time) Match press kit Grand Stade Lille Métropole, Villeneuve d'Ascq Team facts LOSC Lille Formed: 1944 Nickname: Les Dogues (The Mastiffs) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Intertoto Cup: 2004 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 3 (2011) French Cup: 6 (2011) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2013/14: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2012/13: UEFA Champions League group stage 2011/12: UEFA Champions League group stage 2010/11: round of 32 2009/10: round of 16 2008/09: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2006/07: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2005/06: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2004/05: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Intertoto Cup) Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 3-0 on four occasions, most recently v KAA Gent 16/12/10, UEFA Europa League group stage • Biggest away win 1-5: SK Slavia Praha v LOSC 01/10/09, UEFA Europa League group stage • Heaviest home defeat 1-3: LOSC v FC BATE Borisov 19/09/12, UEFA Champions League group stage • Heaviest away defeat 6-1: FC Bayern München v LOSC 07/11/12, UEFA Champions League group stage UEFA Cup/Europa League • Biggest home win 3-0 on two occasions, most recently v KAA Gent (see above) • Biggest away win 1-5: SK Slavia Praha v LOSC (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-2: LOSC v Sporting Clube de Portugal 16/09/10, group stage 0-1: LOSC v AJ Auxerre 10/03/05, round of 16 first leg • Heaviest away defeat 3-0: Liverpool FC v LOSC 18/03/10, round of 16 second leg Everton Formed: 1878 Nickname: The Toffees UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (1): 1985 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) 4 LOSC Lille - Everton FC Thursday 23 October 2014 - 19.00CET (19.00 local time) Match press kit Grand Stade Lille Métropole, Villeneuve d'Ascq League title: 9 (1987) FA Cup: 5 (1995) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup unless indicated otherwise) 2013/14: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2009/10: round of 32 2008/09: first round 2007/08: round of 16 2006/07: did not compete in UEFA club competition 2005/06: first round (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2004/05: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2003/04: did not take part in UEFA club competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 6-1: Everton v SK Brann 21/02/08, UEFA Cup round of 32 second leg 5-0: Everton v Finn Harps FC 26/09/78, UEFA Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-5: Finn Harps FC v Everton 12/09/78, UEFA Cup first round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-2: Everton v SL Benfica 05/11/09, UEFA Europa League group stage • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: SL Benfica v Everton 22/10/09, UEFA Europa League group stage UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 6-1: Everton v SK Brann (see above) 5-0: Everton v Finn Harps FC (see above) • Biggest away win 0-5: Finn Harps FC v Everton (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 0-2: Everton v SL Benfica (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: SL Benfica v Everton (see above) 5 LOSC Lille - Everton FC Thursday 23 October 2014 - 19.00CET (19.00 local time) Match press kit Grand Stade Lille Métropole, Villeneuve d'Ascq Squad list LOSC Lille Current season All-time UCL UEL League UEL UEFA No. Player Nat. Football in France Global Sport Cultures Eds Gary Armstrong, Brunel University, Richard Giulianotti, University of Aberdeen, and David Andrews, The University of Maryland From the Olympics and the World Cup to extreme sports and kabaddi, the social significance of sport at both global and local levels has become increasingly clear in recent years. The contested nature of identity is widely addressed in the social sciences, but sport as a particularly revealing site of such contestation, in both industrialising and post-industrial nations, has been less fruitfully explored. Further, sport and sporting corporations are increasingly powerful players in the world economy. Sport is now central to the social and technological development of mass media, notably in telecommunications and digital television. It is also a crucial medium through which specific populations and political elites communicate and interact with each other on a global stage. Berg publishers are pleased to announce a new book series that will examine and evaluate the role of sport in the contemporary world. Truly global in scope, the series seeks to adopt a grounded, constructively critical stance towards prior work within sport studies and to answer such questions as: • How are sports experienced and practised at the everyday level within local settings? • How do specific cultures construct and negotiate forms of social stratification (such as gender, class, ethnicity) within sporting contexts? • What is the impact of mediation and corporate globalisation upon local sports cultures? Determinedly interdisciplinary, the series will nevertheless privilege anthropological, historical and sociological approaches, but will consider submissions from cultural studies, economics, geography, human kinetics, international relations, law, philosophy and political science.
