Lord Justice Sedley wrote widely on legal and non-legal matters, and continued to do so aft er becoming a judge in 1992. Th is anthology contains classic articles, previously unpublished essays and lecture transcripts. To each, he has added refl ections on what has transpired since or an explanation of the British legal and political context that originally prompted it. Covering the history, engineering and architecture of the justice system, their common theme relates to the author’s experiences as a barrister and judge, most notably in relation to the constitutional changes which have emerged in the last twenty years in the United Kingdom. Th e Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Sedley is a judge of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales. Since being called to the Bar in 1964, he has been involved in high-profi le cases and inquiries including the death of Blair Peach, the Bridgewater Four and Stefan Kiszko appeals and the contempt hearing against Kenneth Baker, then Home Secretary. He became a QC in 1983 and was appointed a High Court judge in 1992, serving in the Queen’s Bench Division. In 1999 he was appointed to the Court of Appeal as a Lord Justice of Appeal. He has sat as a judge ad hoc of the European Court of Human Rights and on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. He is currently an honorary Professor of Law at Warwick University and the University of Wales at Cardiff , and a Judicial Visitor at University College, London. His many lectures include the 1995 Paul Sieghart Memorial Lecture, the 1996 Radcliff e Lectures (with Lord Nolan), the 1998 Hamlyn Lectures, the 2005 Holdsworth Lecture and the 2006 Blackstone Lecture. Possibly out of gratitude to Ernest Marples for all the work the Minister of Transport was pushing towards his former company that Joey had invested in. Marples Ridgway was doing very well, and Joey with them. They were set to do even better now the man the Minister of Transport appointed to sort out British Rail, Dr Beeching was closing 1000s of miles of rail tracks in favour of roads. That meant more roads being built which meant even more work for Marples Ridgway. Jack's trial for possessing a firearm with intent to commit robbery was to go before my good friend Melford Stevenson. The judge knew what our relationship was as he'd been to Jack's club where I'd got him girls.

    michael renton FROM THE ARCHIVE MICHAEL RENTON Notes and observations on a commissioned job GERALD FLEUSS he archive of the late Michael Renton, briefly men- tioned in the previous Journal contains a vast amount T of material in the form of correspondence, drawings and designs, pulls of wood engravings particularly those con- taining lettering, lecture notes, slides and photographs. Among the latter is this superb study of Michael at work in his studio at Brook Granary, Icklesham, a few miles from the ancient Cinque Port of Winchelsea in East Sussex. Michael lived and worked in this small room in isolated countryside for thirty years. He was without the convenience of electricity hence the oil lamp on the table and he had no private transport of his own; the nearest bus stop was a mile and a half distant. Here he produced a staggering range of work which included carved inscriptions, shop and other public signage, calligraphic panels, book jacket designs and wood engravings as well as excellent paintings in many mediums. In short he was a true all-round artist-craftsman and one of the last of a small band of professional, highly-talented multi-skilled letterers. To Michael’s right can be seen the full-size drawing for a carved memorial tablet to Sir Melford Stevenson, the High Court Judge who had tried the notorious Kray twins in their first trial for the murder of Cornell and McVitie at the ‘Blind Beggar’ pub in East London. Lady Stevenson died soon after the initial design was finished, involving a complete redraft to incorporate her own details.

Signature: 1 ABSTRACT The thesis examines the relationship between Britain’s Jews, both established and refugee, with the host community from 1938 to 1948. The relationship is studied in the light of events in Europe and the Near East from the 1938 Anschluss to the 1948 founding of Israel and the ways they impacted upon Jews in Britain. The work shows a positive reaction towards Jews in Britain, with few, but specific exceptions. Existing academic work has often concentrated on those exceptions, particularly in the East End of London. This study looks at the wider Jewish experience to show a more peaceful and tolerant coexistence than has formally been presented, especially to recently arrived Jews. The focus of the thesis is on the different personal experiences of Jews in Britain, against the more familiar high political context of the period. The thesis does not dispute the existence of anti-Semitism, but shows that it was limited to traditional geographical areas and has been in many cases confused with a more general xenophobia towards any ‘outsider’ or ‘foreigner’.
