    What do I need to play L5R Diskwars? To play L5R Diskwars, you will need an Army of Disks and one or more other players to battle against. We recommend that each player purchase a L5R Diskwars Army Set. If this is not possible, you can split the number of Disks contained in one Army Set into two smaller Armies and play a series of very small battles. It is also a good idea to acquire a ruler for measuring purposes. If one is not available, you can cut out the ruler that is printed on the bottom of this rulesheet. Winning the Game L5R Diskwars is played by using different scenarios, each with its own victory conditions. We have included several such scenarios at the end of these rules, and encourage you to make up your own scenarios as well. As the first part of the experimentation, plasmonic and superparamagnetic nanoparticles of gold and iron are synthesized in the form of core-shell and alloy. The purpose of making these nanoparticles is that the core-shell and alloy nanoparticles exhibit enhanced properties and new functionality due to close proximity of two functionally different components. The synthesis of core-shell and alloy nanoparticles is of special interest for possible application towards magnetic hyperthermia, catalysis and drug delivery. The iron-gold core-shell nanoparticles prepared in the reverse micelles reflux in high boiling point solvent (diphenyl ether) in presence of oleic acid and oleyl amine results in the formation of monodisperse core-shell nanoparticles. The second part of the experimentation includes the preparation of water soluble iron- gold alloy nanoparticles. The alloy nanoparticles are prepared for the first time at relatively low temperature (110 oC). The use of hydrophilic ligand 3-mercapto-1-propane sulphonic acid ensures the aqueous solubility of the alloy nanoparticles. Next, hafnium oxide core-gold shell nanoparticles are prepared for the first time using high temperature reduction method. These nanoparticles are potentially important as a high κ material in semiconductor industry.

    Natural Selection and Coalescent Theory John Wakeley Harvard University INTRODUCTION The story of population genetics begins with the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species and the tension which followed concerning the nature of inheritance. Today, workers in this field aim to understand the forces that produce and maintain genetic variation within and between species. For this we use the most direct kind of genetic data: DNA sequences, even entire genomes. Our “Great Obsession” with explaining genetic variation (Gillespie, 2004a) can be traced back to Darwin’s recognition that natural selection can occur only if individuals of a species vary, and this variation is heritable. Darwin might have been surprised that the importance of natural selection in shaping variation at the molecular level would be de-emphasized, beginning in the late 1960s, by scientists who readily accepted the fact and importance of his theory (Kimura, 1983). The motivation behind this chapter is the possible demise of this Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution, which a growing number of population geneticists feel must follow recent observations of genetic variation within and between species. One hundred fifty years after the publication of the Origin, we are struggling to fully incorporate natural selection into the modern, genealogical models of population genetics. The main goal of this chapter is to present the mathematical models that have been used to describe the effects of positive selective sweeps on genetic variation, as mediated by gene genealogies, or coalescent trees. Background material, comprised of population genetic theory and simulation results, is provided in order to facilitate an understanding of these models.
