A record 46 Champion Trackers entered, and in late August entries were drawn for the 10 tracks at the Invitational. Congratulations to the two dogs and their owners who passed the test this year: CT Eastern Waters’ Sea Zephyr, VCD3, RE, MXJ, NF, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever owned by Doreen and Gary Palmer, of Columbia, Connecticut; and CT Montage Surfs Up, VCD1, CDX, PT, a Belgian Tervuren owned by Maura Hogan and Kathryn Madden, of Syracuse, New York. We were pleased to see so many tracking enthusiasts and supporters come out to watch and volunteer their time and skills. We had a large crowd following the dogs as they navigated scent trails across a variety of surfaces. Our dedicated and talented judges Herb Morrison, Carol Ruthenberg, Roy Fair, and Sally Diess were there every step of the way. I’d also like to thank Holly Leale, of Argus Ranch; the Mid-Kentucky Kennel Club and Greater Louisville Dog Training Club, who provided members to help manage the event; and Susan Ritter, the marketing and communications officer of Bernheim Arboretum. Without their support, we could not have held the NTI. Our AKC Companion Events staff members were also instrumental in the execution of the event, especially Curt Curtis, assistant vice president of Companion Events; Pam Manaton, director of Obedience, Rally, and Tracking; Lisa Strickland, AKC project administrator and NTI event secretary; Diane Schultz, AKC Obedience/Rally/Tracking field rep and NTI Event Chairman; and Caroline Murphy, AKC manager of Coonhound Events for designing the artwork for the commemorative event souvenirs. My thanks to them. For more details and photos of the NTI, please visit akc.org/events/tracking/national_invitational/2011. Sincerely, Dennis B. There are several concerns on the possible negative effects on PPG including anaesthesia, surgery and complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of PPG. Microsoft excel was used for statistical analysis. The information about 6646 purebred kittens who had gone through PPG before 27 weeks of age was obtained from the online retrospective survey. Database included cats from the different breeds and –age groups when the surgery was performed, collected in 2019.

I know it will be a better one for all of us. Welcome to the first issue of our ‘bigger and better’ bulletin thanks to the talented Carol Urick. Carol was the editor of Daneline for many years and evolved it into the wonderful publication that it was. We only ended it due to lack of funds in the club and the increasing cost of publication. Since I’ve been doing Throwback Thursday, I’ve heard from several people across the country who told me that they looked forward to getting it each year at the National. I hope everyone will get on board with getting your brags and litters listed. We are planning an every other month publication so the next deadline should be March 1st. I would like to welcome our new Associate Members, Michelle Hojdysz from New Rochelle, NY and Anne Sanders from Gardiner, NY. We hope to actually meet you in person when dog shows open up again. January is the month when we hold our annual meeting and election of officers.

  • Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (Pkdef) in Cats
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency About the disease Pyruvate kinase deficiency is an inherited disease of Abyssinian and Somali cats. Pyruvate kinase is a red blood cell enzyme important in red blood cell energy metabolism. Therefore, if this enzyme is lacking, a haemolytic anaemia can result. However, the anaemia may only be mild and intermittently detectable, or may not become evident until the cat is older. A rapid severe life-threatening anaemia can also develop. The disease is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, so only cats with two copies of the defective gene are affected. Carrier cats are clinically healthy but can pass the defective gene to their offspring. About the test The Molecular Diagnostic Unit offers a genetic test to diagnose autosomal-recessive pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKDef) in cats. This genetic test is a PCR-based pyrosequencing assay that can reliably distinguish between Affected, Carrier and Normal cats. It is highly recommended that all Abyssinian and Somali cats used for breeding are tested for the defective gene, as well as cats of these breeds showing signs of haemolytic anaemia. For Somali cats, testing for PKDef is now compulsory if cats are to be registered on the GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy) active register and used for breeding. Please note: The test detects the Normal and Mutant PKDef genes found in domestic cats. The test also works in Bengal and Savannah cats, and detects the Asian Leopard Cat or Serval gene if present (i.e. in F1/F2 cats). There is no point in testing Asian Leopard Cats and Servals for PKDef since the mutant gene came from the domestic cat population.

  • Devocalization Fact Sheet
Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association Devocalization Fact Sheet Views of humane treatment of animals in both the veterinary profession and our society as a whole are evolving. Many practicing clinicians are refusing to perform non‐therapeutic surgeries such as devocalization, declawing, ear cropping and tail docking of dogs and cats because these procedures provide no medical benefit to the animals and are done purely for the convenience or cosmetic preferences of the caregiver. At this point, devocalization procedures are not widely included in veterinary medical school curricula. What is partial devocalization? What is total devocalization? The veterinary medical term for the devocalization procedure is ventriculocordectomy. When the surgery is performed for the non‐therapeutic purpose of pet owner convenience, the goal is to muffle or eliminate dog barking or cat meowing. Ventriculocordectomy refers to the surgical removal of the vocal cords. They are composed of ligament and muscle, covered with mucosal tissue. Partial devocalization refers to removal of only a portion of the vocal cords. Total devocalization refers to removal of a major portion of the vocal cords. How are these procedures performed? Vocal cord removal is not a minor surgery by any means. It is an invasive procedure with the inherent risks of anesthesia, infection, blood loss and other serious complications. Furthermore, it does not appear to have a high efficacy rate since many patients have the procedure performed more than once, either to try to obtain more definitive vocal results or to correct unintentional consequences of their previous surgeries. Often only the volume and/or pitch of animals’ voices are changed by these procedures.
