Dive 010 - Sea Docs Our last collection of Sea Genre films focusing on the watery realms of The Soundtrack Zone may be classified as films in the Sea Documentary genre or, for short, Sea Docs. Two early examples of scores for a Sea Doc film were those composed by Paul J. Smith for two Walt Disney’s True-Life Adventures films: Beaver Valley (1950) and Prowlers of the Everglades (1953). A Disneyland LP (WDL-4011 – released in 1975) included the following tracks from those two films: Beaver Valley (7:15) - Beaver Valley Theme - Baby Ducks - Beaver Romance - Salmon Run – Otters Prowlers of the Everglades (4:09) - Alligators - Swamp Deluge - Otters And Gators LP In 1956, Walt Disney’s Disneyland WDL-4006 LP presented Paul J. Smith’s score for another True-Life Adventure film, Secrets of Life. One of the album’s suites, “Under The Sea And Along The Shore,” includes several underwater-related tracks: Decorator Crab, Jellyfish, Angler Fish, and Fiddler Crabs (04:21) LP Three years later, in 1959, Walt Disney released a short film titled Mysteries of the Deep (23:55). Three of these films – Beaver Valley, Prowlers of the Everglades, and Mysteries of the Deep are available on DVD (see DVD 1 photo below). Secrets of Life is included on DVD 2 (see photo below). DVD 1 DVD 2 Unfortunately none of the scores for these Walt Disney underwater-related films have been commercially issued on CD. Fortunately, the scores of many subsequent Sea Docs films have been released over the years on LP and/or CD. -
Perceptual Realism and Embodied Experience in the Travelogue Genre
Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications- Volume 3, Issue 3 – Pages 229-258 Perceptual Realism and Embodied Experience in the Travelogue Genre By Perla Carrillo Quiroga This paper draws two lines of analysis. On the one hand it discusses the history of the This paper draws two lines of analysis. On the one hand it discusses the history of the travelogue genre while drawing a parallel with a Bazanian teleology of cinematic realism. On the other, it incorporates phenomenological approaches with neuroscience’s discovery of mirror neurons and an embodied simulation mechanism in order to reflect upon the techniques and cinematic styles of the travelogue genre. In this article I discuss the travelogue film genre through a phenomenological approach to film studies. First I trace the history of the travelogue film by distinguishing three main categories, each one ascribed to a particular form of realism. The hyper-realistic travelogue, which is related to a perceptual form of realism; the first person travelogue, associated with realism as authenticity; and the travelogue as a traditional documentary which is related to a factual form of realism. I then discuss how these categories relate to Andre Bazin’s ideas on realism through notions such as montage, duration, the long take and his "myth of total cinema". I discuss the concept of perceptual realism as a key style in the travelogue genre evident in the use of extra-filmic technologies which have attempted to bring the spectator’s body closer into an immersion into filmic space by simulating the physical and sensorial experience of travelling. -

Charles R. Acland IMAX TECHNOLOGY AND THE TOURIST GAZE Abstract IMAX grew out of the large and multiple screen lm experiments pro- duced for Expo ’67 in Montréal. Since then, it has become the most suc- cessful large format cinema technology.IMAX is a multiple articulation of technological system, corporate entity and cinema practice. This article shows how IMAX is reintroducing a technologically mediated form of ‘tourist gaze’, as elaborated by John Urry,into the context of the insti- tutions of museums and theme parks. IMAX is seen as a powerful exem- plar of the changing role of cinema-going in contemporary post-Fordist culture, revealing new congurations of older cultural forms and practices. In particular,the growth of this brand of commercial cinema runs parallel to a blurring of the realms of social and cultural activity,referred to as a process of ‘dedifferentiation’. This article gives special attention to the espistemological dimensions of IMAX’s conditions of spectatorship. CanadianStories of Canadian Innovations Innovation McIntosh Red Apple The McIntosh Red is a world-famous apple that was discovered in Ontario in 1811. John McIntosh, a settler from New York, found apple-tree seedlings as he cleared brush on his Dundela farm, near Morrisburg on the St Lawrence River. McIntosh transplanted the trees and one bore delicious fruit: a deep-red apple with tart flavour and tender white flesh. Over the decades, the McIntosh family propagated their unique apple by grafting scions, or cuttings, to other fruit trees in their orchard. Allan McIntosh, John’s son, continued this work. He established a McIntosh Red nursery in 1870 and sold trees to other orchardists. By the early 1900s, the McIntosh Red was popular across North America. Apple breeders, such as W. T. Macoun at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, used the hardy McIntosh Red to create new varieties including Lobo, Cortland, Empire, and Spartan. Farm botanist and artist Faith Fyles recorded some of this breeding work in beautiful watercolours. And while new apple varieties like Gala and Honeycrisp have challenged the McIntosh Red’s supremacy, the McIntosh apple remains a favourite both for cooking and for eating fresh. Notably, the McIntosh Red inspired the name of the Macintosh computer. Robust and rugged, the Hurricane was a single-seat monoplane launched in 1935. -
