Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications- Volume 3, Issue 3 – Pages 229-258 Perceptual Realism and Embodied Experience in the Travelogue Genre By Perla Carrillo Quiroga This paper draws two lines of analysis. On the one hand it discusses the history of the This paper draws two lines of analysis. On the one hand it discusses the history of the travelogue genre while drawing a parallel with a Bazanian teleology of cinematic realism. On the other, it incorporates phenomenological approaches with neuroscience’s discovery of mirror neurons and an embodied simulation mechanism in order to reflect upon the techniques and cinematic styles of the travelogue genre. In this article I discuss the travelogue film genre through a phenomenological approach to film studies. First I trace the history of the travelogue film by distinguishing three main categories, each one ascribed to a particular form of realism. The hyper-realistic travelogue, which is related to a perceptual form of realism; the first person travelogue, associated with realism as authenticity; and the travelogue as a traditional documentary which is related to a factual form of realism. I then discuss how these categories relate to Andre Bazin’s ideas on realism through notions such as montage, duration, the long take and his "myth of total cinema". I discuss the concept of perceptual realism as a key style in the travelogue genre evident in the use of extra-filmic technologies which have attempted to bring the spectator’s body closer into an immersion into filmic space by simulating the physical and sensorial experience of travelling. -

Commonly referenced as IMAX® films, these films come closest to the total cinema posited by Bazin which would offer a complete representation of the world. The strict display requirement for these films has resulted in their association with institutional venues and implicates them in the dissemination of ideology and cultural knowledges. In a Year When Many Outstanding Giant Screen Films Were Released
he Giant Screen Theater Association (GSTA) held its seventh annual Achievement Awards on the last evening of the Glasgow conference T with a celebration to re c o g n i z e c r e a t i v i t y and excellence in the giant screen industry. Film awards, which are voted by GSTA members, were presented to Coral Reef Adventure for Best Film, Bugs! for Best Cinematography and Pulse: a STOMP Odyssey for Best Sound. Peter Parks of Image Quest 3-D received the Special Achievement award for his macro- and microphotography on Bugs! Jane Goodall’s Wild Chimpanzees was awarded Best Film for Lifelong Learning, which is given to the educational program best representing the development and presentation of a complete educational experience utilizing giant screen film, exhibits, educational materials and other media or materials, as voted by GSTA members. The Marketing Awards, recognizing exceptional marketing campaigns, are chosen by a panel of industry peers appointed by GSTA’s conference and awards committee and included two awards this year. The Best Film Launch, awarded for the best launch of an individual giant screen film by a GSTA theater member, was presented to Science North in Sudbury, In a year when many Ontario, Canada, for its launch of Jane Goodall’s Wild Chimpanzees. Best outstanding giant screen Marketing Campaign, presented for the best films were released, GSTA marketing package designed and produced by the film distributor, was awarded to SK members voted to spread the Films, Inc., for Bugs! No award was given honors among a number of for Best Theater Launch this year.
