Thurlestone Hotel Nr Salcombe, Devon The South West 120th anniversary

In 1896, Margaret Amelia Grose first offered bed and breakfast to visiting golfers. Matthew Grose is Managing Director today, the fifth generation of a dynasty which is the longest running hotelier family in the UK, and often wonders what his Great, Great Grandmother would make of Thurlestone Hotel today with luxury rooms and leisure facilities compared to straw mattresses, oil lamps and candles. Margaret Amelia recognised the need for accommodation for people pursuing a new leisure pursuit, ‘golf’, and since then, every generation of the Grose family has always endeavored to move with the times to match the competition over the decades. The original Farmhouse, where it all began, is now the Village Inn, still owned by the Grose family and part of the Thurlestone Hotel. Here’s to another 120 years… For full details and current offers, visit www.prideofbritainhotels.com/hotels/thurlestone-hotel

Gravetye Manor West Hoathly, Sussex Gravetye Head Chef wins Michelin Star Head Chef George Blogg has won his first ever Michelin star at Gravetye Manor in West Sussex. It is a personal triumph for George, a young chef who has carved an interesting career working for some of the industry’s most talented chefs, including Phil Howard and David Everitt-Matthias. The key to success at Gravetye is the marriage of George’s talent, the team he has selected to join him and the privilege of having a two acre walled kitchen garden on his doorstep. Gravetye Manor has long been recognised as a hotel with a magnificent garden, but during the last year, the collaboration between head gardener Tom Coward and chef George has taken home grown seasonality to a new level. With ‘staycation’ still the buzzword in 2016, now is a great time to explore closer to home. Take the kids to stay at Maison Talbooth on the north Essex/Suffolk border and discover this beautiful part of East Anglia. The hotel is just a short walk from the river Stour where canoe hire can be arranged, from a single one-man canoe to one that holds a family of four, as well as including tuition and all safety equipment. Another suggestion is to hire a bike or two and meander through the lanes to Suffolk, or follow one of the cycle routes down to the sea at Harwich and take the train on the evocatively named Mayflower Line part way back to the hotel. Either option (or both!) is a great way to get the most out of your stay in the Dedham Vale. For full details and current offers, visit www.prideofbritainhotels.com/hotels/maison-talbooth

Two armies collide - victory to one; to the other, defeat. Centuries past, a king lost his kingdom in the Battle of Bosworth, and whilst Leicester remembers the first anniversary of the Plantagenet Richard III’s re-interment in Leicester Cathedral, the occupants of Leicester today are understandably more pre-occupied with the recent battle for the ultimate prize in league football: the Premier League title. Sports fan or history buff, there is plenty to do around Leicestershire, and Stapleford Park is the perfect location to stay during a sojourn to Middle England. Historic places like Belvoir Castle and Peterborough Cathedral (where Henry VIII’s first wife, Katherine of Aragon, is interred) are easy distances away, as is Leicester, home to Leicester City Football Club and the Leicester Tigers. Not forgetting the Burghley Horse Trials on Sep 1st - 4th, which remains the epitome of the best is equestrian sport.
