February 2009 1 Foreword Planning our Route to a 2012 Health & Physical Activity Legacy The 2012 Games will aim to set a new standard for the Olympic and Paralympic movement in staging a ‘once in a lifetime’ event that delivers genuine nationwide legacies in the form of economic, social, health and environmental benefits for the United Kingdom. In order to achieve a tangible and lasting legacy for the country, we need to start to prepare now. We need to be planning, creating policy and building capacity to encourage and allow more people to get more active. We have a rare opportunity to radically change the sedentary culture in the United Kingdom. Regional physical activity teams in London, West Midlands, East Midlands, the East and the South East are already collaborating to drive this work forward. This systematic review sets out the lessons learned from the best available international evidence. It will enable us to work with greater confidence towards securing a true and lasting health and physical activity legacy from the 2012 Games. -

Wimaladasa sweated it out through thick and thin By Aubrey Kuruppu Walking around the ample, spacious premises at the Sugathadasa stadium last weekend; I encountered a dark, balding person whose face looked positively familiar. On closer scrutiny, and after double checking I found to my astonishment that he was one of Sri Lanka's best-ever sprinters, a national champion many times over, and an athlete who had represented his country with great distinction on many a foreign track. Having displayed his sprinting prowess in full measure at Alawwa Central, Wickremasinghe Wimaladasa (for that is the great man's name) duly found employment in the Sri Lanka Army. National champion in the 100 and 200 metres in 1964 and 1965, Wimaladasa was selected for the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok. Injured prior to departure, he had a recurrence of the injury during his race and pulled out. He missed the whole of the 1967 season due to this injury. Words of wisdom spoken to him by sporting Doctors H.S.R Gunawardena and Brigadier Thurairajah made Wimaladasa change to the 400 metres in 1968. His success was immediate, as he lowered the record (49.8) held by Lakshman de Alwis and Darrel Lieverz. The time he returned was 48.7. He improved on this marginally at the Singapore Nationals, striking out for the Gold medal in 48.6. However he recorded his best timing of 47.4 at the Thai Nationals not long after. A Silver medal in the 400 metres at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok is a much cherished prize. -

I’ve heard bells go, and barmen saying “Time, gentlemen and ladies,” but not precisely “Hurry up please it’s time” – a line in a poem by T.S. Eliot, “The Wasteland.” The question which lingers in the poem is whether time means anything to us. “The days are getting shorter.” “This year has rushed past.” “They’re growing up before our eyes.” “You blink and you miss it.” “I’ll be glad when this year is over.” All these sorts of phrases tumble out, but T. S. Eliot was asking, how might we better measure out our days ? What might we use our time for ? In one perspective we are but an indistinguishable flash against a backdrop of almost unimaginable billions of years. In another, however, the perspective which we work with is this hour or this day – and if we stop to think about it, what are we doing with this time that is ours ? I don’t want to plunge anyone into despair – though T.S. Eliot’s poem, written in 1922, was not full of hope – but rather to reflect that every new day is a gift to us ! That requires a bit of directed work on our part. Not only can we get up on the wrong side of the bed, so to speak, but we do allow ourselves sometimes to go through days, even months and years, rather more full of complaints and cynicism and dark thoughts than with thankfulness in our hearts. -

Forecasting the Olympic medal distribution during a pandemic: A socio-economic machine learning model ∗ Christoph Schlembach, Sascha L. Schmidt, Dominik Schreyer, and Linus Wunderlich First Version: December 09, 2020 This Version: June 21, 2021 Abstract Forecasting the number of Olympic medals for each nation is highly relevant for different stakeholders: Ex ante, sports betting companies can determine the odds while sponsors and media companies can allocate their resources to promising teams. Ex post, sports politicians and managers can benchmark the performance of their teams and evaluate the drivers of success. To significantly increase the Olympic medal forecasting accuracy, we apply machine learning, more specifically a two-staged Random Forest, thus outperforming more traditional naïve forecast for three previous Olympics held between 2008 and 2016 for the first time. Regarding the Tokyo 2020 Games in 2021, our model suggests that the United States will lead the Olympic medal table, winning 120 medals, followed by China (87) and Great Britain (74).
