City Mouse or Country Mouse?—Joseph Mitchell’s Interpretation of the City by Norman Sims Paper presented to the International Association for Literary Journalism Studies 2009 Convention at Northwestern University This paper briefly compares the sensibilities of two New Yorker writers: Joseph Mitchell, a native of North Carolina whose family owned land and was engaged in the tobacco business, and A. J. Liebling, who was a native of New York City. Liebling can be seen as the “city mouse.” In his classic works on the city, Liebling highlighted groups of people—con men, cigar store Indians, boxers and their entourages. Liebling saw people as created and determined by their surroundings. Liebling was at home in the city and he celebrated the traditional benefits of city life, such as the great food of Paris. Mitchell and Liebling were close friends, but there are differences in their work, or at least different tendencies. Mitchell’s works focused on individuals, rather than groups, and he rarely attributed a person’s character or actions to outside forces. While there’s a temptation to treat Mitchell as a “country mouse” whose perspectives were shaped in his rural background, this paper uses interview material to argue that Mitchell was as much a citizen of the city as Liebling. Unlike Liebling, Mitchell always felt he was an outsider in the city, and he tended to portray people whose marginality helped to define them, such as Joe Gould. Literature can be seen as the expression of identity. In fiction, we read for a window on the author’s mind, not for the facts of the world. -

Authenticity, Originality and the Copy: Questions of Truth and Authorship in the Work of Mark Landis, Elizabeth Durack, and Richard Prince A thesis submitted to the Division of Research and Advanced Studies of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Art History Program of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning April 2012 by Rebekah Catherine Shipe BA, Lycoming College, 2009 Committee Chair: Morgan Thomas, Ph.D. Reader: Kimberly Paice, Ph.D. Reader: Vincent Sansalone Abstract As contemporary artists transgress accepted definitions of authenticity and challenge ideas of originality and creativity, we must re-evaluate our understanding of these concepts. By focusing on three illuminating case studies, I examine how recent practices complicate basic concepts of authorship and artistic truth. Chapter One explores the case of art forger, Mark Landis (b. 1955), to illuminate the ambiguity of the copy and the paradoxical aura of forgeries in the wake of postmodernism. Focusing on the case of Australian artist Elizabeth Durack (1915-2000), who created and exhibited paintings under the fictitious persona of an Aboriginal artist, Eddie Burrup, Chapter Two links the controversies surrounding her work to key theoretical explorations of aura, reproducibility, and originality. Chapter Three deals with the self-conscious deployment of postmodern notions of originality and authorship in the re-photographed photographs of notorious ‘appropriation artist’ Richard Prince (b. 1949). :: SCAN | journal of media arts culture :: Scan Journal vol 2 number 3 december 2005 Lost City Found: an interview with Luc Sante Peter Doyle Luc Sante’s books Low life: Lures and Snares of Old New York (1991) and Evidence (1992) both helped produce and partook of a much broader awakening of interest in hitherto neglected cultural histories of cities of the New World. In lucid, imaginative but unforced prose, Low life maps the simultaneously familiar and wildly exotic undercultures of late nineteenth century New York - the grifters, drifters, dopers, prostitutes, orphans, con men, gangsters, sexual adventurers, bohemians and eccentrics, and the tenements, alleys, saloons, clubs, brothels and tea pads they inhabited. Evidence revisits that physical territory via a series of NYPD homicide photographs from the early twentieth century. Rigorously considered, yet expressed in clear poetic prose, Evidence offers subtle textual meditations on the photograph at large and the forensic photograph in particular. These two works, with their keen attention to the fabric of the everyday, and their broader sympathies for fringe and outsider cultures have significantly contributed to an awakening of interest in cultural histories of New York and of cities in general. Sante’s Factory of Facts (1998) weaves personal memoir, family memoir and broad ‘ethno-history’ into a meditation on language, cultural ancestry and selfhood. Sante has written regularly for The New York Review of Books since the 1980s, in which appeared his important essay ‘My Lost City’ (That essay has been more recently anthologised in Best American Essays 2004). This interview was conducted via email in the aftermath of Sante’s visit to Sydney in late 2004, during which he delivered a keynote address at Macquarie University Media Department’s Ghost Town Seminar. -

If I pitched you a story about the Beat generation led by Harry Potter, the new Harry Osborne, a guy from X-Men and the guy from Boardwalk Empire with half his face missing, I'm sure the reaction would be pretty great. The Old House at Home by Joseph Mitchell Originally published in The New Yorker, April 13, 1940 McSorley’s occupies the ground floor of a red-brick tenement at 15 Seventh Street, just off Cooper Square, where the Bowery ends. It was opened in 1854 and is the oldest saloon in New York City. In eighty-eight years it has had four owners—an Irish immigrant, his son, a retired policeman, and his daughter—and all of them have been opposed to change. It is equipped with electricity, but the bar is stubbornly illuminated with a pair of gas lamps, which flicker fitfully and throw shadows on the low, cobwebby ceiling each time someone opens the street door. There is no cash register. Coins are dropped in soup bowls—one for nickels, one for dimes, one for quarters, and one for halves—and bills are kept in a rosewood cashbox. It is a drowsy place; the bartenders never make a needless move, the customers nurse their mugs of ale, and the three clocks on the walls have not been in agreement for many years. The clientele is motley. It includes mechanics from the many garages in the neighborhood, salesmen from the restaurant-supply houses on Cooper Square, truck-drivers from Wanamaker’s, internes from Bellevue, students from Cooper Union, and clerks from the row of second-hand bookshops just north of Astor Place. The backbone of the clientele, however, is a rapidly thinning group of crusty old men, predominantly Irish, who have been drinking there since they were youths and now have a proprietary feeling about the place. -

An Onstage Conversation with Zadie Smith, author Moderated by Lucinda Roy, Alumni Distinguished Professor, Department of English at Virginia Tech Presented in partnership with the Department of English Visiting Writers Series and the Women’s Center at Virginia Tech in celebration of its 25th anniversary Biography ZADIE SMITH Novelist Zadie Smith was born in North London in 1975 to an English father and a Jamaican mother. She read English at Cambridge before graduating in 1997. Her acclaimed first novel,White Teeth (2000), is a vibrant portrait of contemporary multicultural London, told through the stories of three ethnically diverse families. The book won a number of awards and prizes, including the Guardian First Book Award, the Whitbread First Novel Award, the Commonwealth Writers Prize (Overall Winner, Best First Book), and two BT Ethnic and Multicultural Media Awards (Best Book/Novel and Best Female Media Newcomer). It was also shortlisted for the Mail on Sunday/John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Author’s Club First Novel Award. White Teeth has been translated into over 20 languages and was adapted for Channel 4 television for broadcast in autumn 2002 and for the stage in November 2018. Smith’s The Autograph Man (2002), a story of loss, obsession, and the nature of celebrity, won the 2003 Jewish Quarterly Wingate Literary Prize for Fiction. -
