Early Years Learning Freelancer: Devising the Experience ______

Department: Audiences : Freelance Duration: July 2019 – October 2019

Commission scope The Museum is looking for a freelancer with workshop facilitation experience, specialising in early years learning, along with background in a designer-maker practice. The freelancer is required to devise an ‘experience’ for families based on a pre-school animated character (with children aged under 7 years) that will take place daily at the Design Museum from Friday 25th October to Monday 28th October and from Saturday 28th December to Monday 6th January.

Inspired by the museum’s upcoming exhibition ‘Moving to Mars’ and informed by contemporary design practice, the freelancer will have the opportunity to devise the experience that will celebrate a successful animation series and bring young audiences closer to design through learning and fun activities.

The ‘experience’ will represent a part of the programme which will also include a free exhibition for both young and adult audiences, free activities on the museum mezzanine such as sketching and colouring and a pop-up in the museum shop. The experience and exhibition will feature a well- known animated pre-school brand.

THE EXPERIENCE Guidelines

The ‘experience’ the freelancer is required to devise will be ticketed and hosted in the museum’s Huth Gallery (area of 319sqm).

Ideally, the maximum quantity of tickets sold for each session will be 50 (each ticket will grant access for 1 child and 1 adult). We are expecting a maximum of 100 people per session. Every day there will be 4 ticketed sessions with a duration of 50 mins. Furthermore, the changeover time will be of 40 minutes. If your proposal differs from the following structure, please advise us on recommended capacity, sessions and timings.

The experience should be memorable, fun, focused on design and learning and centred on an animated pre-school brand. Ideally, but not necessarily, the experience and learning activities will connect to the ‘Moving to Mars’ exhibition which will be at the Design Museum during the duration of the programme. The experience will include an interactive finale, advised by our partner, which will be integrated into the proposal.

The proposal should take into consideration the room environment and how the learning activities will interact with it. The designed activities in the room should be reusable and easy to store. The proposal should be cost-efficient.

The activities will encourage children and their families to engage in activity together, explore design through making, gain key developmental skills and be inspired by design and its place in the world around us. The experience should include the opportunity for the young audience to get their own badge as a reward for the new skills learnt through the activities. The overall experience will be delivered by a maximum number of 4 facilitators, managed initially by the freelancer.

The project plan should include a list of materials, tools and equipment required for the suggested proposal, a detailed example of the learning activities and the ideal profile and skills of the facilitators that would put the plan into action.

The freelancer will be expected to oversee the first days of delivery, make recommendations for adjustment and at the end of the first tranche of activity provide a short report detailing the successes and learnings of the project.

Deliverables ‘Experience Project Plan’ • Describing the experience and the core points of the proposal, highlighting the fun and memorable moments • The experience should reflect the values of “doing things” and “having a go” • Indicating the skills the facilitators need to deliver the experience • Learning/educational aspects to link back to EYFS curriculum where relevant • Listing equipment, tools and materials needed for the project to be developed • Including options of pre-designed activities to be made in the experience • The experience should consider innovative ways to extend the experience to live outside of the museum (eg: being able to email yourself a pic of certain, ways of creating user generated content etc) • Feeding into the brief for the design to the space and its integration with the activities • Making sure that the room changeover can be accommodated within the time frame suggested • Considering that a small area of the room will serve as a cloakroom and rest area • Ensure safety and wellbeing of all participants • Advising on how to best execute the proposal and evaluate the experience
