The project group consisted of three VKM members, four external experts and a project leader from the VKM secretariat. Two external referees commented on and reviewed the draft opinion. The VKM Panel on Alien Organisms and Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) evaluated and approved the final opinion. For this assignment, the Panel on Alien Organisms and CITES is supplemented by three members of the Panel on Animal Health and Welfare. In preliminary trials, all drugs were supplied to infected fish at 40 g per kg of feed for 10 d. Twenty-two of the drugs tested (aminosidine, amprolium, benznidazole, b~thionol,chloroquine, diethylcarbamazine, flubendazole, levamisole, mebendazole, n~etronidazole,mclosamide, nitroxynil, oxibendazole, parbendazole, piperazine, praziquantel, roni- dazole, secnidazole, tetramisole, thiophanate, toltrazuril and trichlorfon) were ineffective Triclabenda- zole and nitroscanate completely eliminated the infection. Triclabendazole was effective only at the screening dosage (40 g per kg of feed for 10 d), while nitroscanate was effective at dosages as low as 0.6 g per kg of feed for 1 d. The presence of such a character, even in ovigerous specimens, suggests the possibility of it being a characteristic of genus Salmoneus.This case is compared to that of Automate,where males lack the appendix masculina. INTRODUCTION Chez les crevettes carides il existe normalement deux sexes g6n6tiquement diff6renci6s et qui s'expriment - du point de vue morphologique - 4 partir d'un age relativemcnt precoce. La presence de caracteres sexuels secondaircs permet quelquefois de reconnaitre aiscment les sexes, au moins a 1'etat adulte: c'est le cas du developpement d6mesur6 du deuxieme p6r6iopode chez les males de Macrobrachium ou des diff6rences dans la forme du rostrc chez Leander tenuicornis (Say). They are often called by the common name of gill lice. Salmincola is an obligate parasite of fish with no intermediate hosts, but with several stages of development occurring off of the host. The species found in Colorado has not been delineated, with the exception of the population at Crystal River State Fish Hatchery, Poudre River State Fish Hatchery, and Catamount Reservoir (S. californiensis). We are currently pursuing identification of species found within the state through the use of DNA studies. S. californiensis is native to the western United States, but has spread via fish transfers as far east as New Jersey. It has been documented to infest rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha), lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), Kokanee salmon (O. nerka), and cutthroat trout (O. clarki) (Hoffman 1999). Salmincola edwardsii is holarctic in distribution and affects primarily fish in the genus Salvelinus, but can infect and has been reported from O. clarki, O. mykiss, O. nerka, mountain whitefish (Prosopium williamsoni), arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), Dolly Varden (S. malma), lake trout, and arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) (Hoffman 1999). Salmincola sp. infections of fish are not to be confused with Nanophytes salmincola. The latter is a parasitic fluke with a snail being the first intermediate host, salmonid fish being the second intermediate host, and canids, felids, mustelids, bear, and humans as the definitive or final host.
