Nawaz Khan Department of Mass Communication, Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, India ABSTRACT The Meitei Pangal community of Manipur has undergone tremendous social change over the centuries. Among the factors responsible for the change in the community, the change in traditional occupations is one indicator of social change. From being honest professional soldiers in history to serving as journalists in the contemporary times, members of the Meitei Pangal community engage in a variety of activities as their occupation that supports their physical and emotional well being besides being symbols of their social status. The community has more than sixty clan titles given by different kings mostly based on their either occupations or inhabitations. The multi-occupational nature of the community is reflected in the diversity of these occupation-based clan names. But clan names and traditional occupations of the community have been drifting apart over the centuries even as change has taken place in many aspects of the society. Today members of the community are no more identifiable with their occupation after which their clans were named because their occupations have been diversified while clan names remain merely a group identity. The occupational change is observed in terms of changes in the distribution of activities in the socio-economic structure of society with social implications on the work force of the community.

  • Introduction
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION The present study attempts to assess the livelihood and human security among women in Manipur. The study also tries to understand the context of women towards vulnerability and to explore the relationship between livelihood assets, problems, coping strategies and human security. Every aspect of human life changes so fast in all directions – in terms of social, cultural, economic, political, ecological, intellectual, professional, psychological, and technological dimensions in human living. These kinds of shift make people change in their living conditions, perspectives and belief system – looking forward to a new way of life expecting more comfortable and improved, but it is neither easy to reach that condition of living nor enough at once if one can. Simultaneously, there is an emergence of new problems and challenges – to achieve the goal as well as to make the achieved sustainable. Sustainability becomes significant considering questions on livelihood so that one has to be in a position to cope with any kind of precarious situations and disturbances in continuing those ways of living. At the same time, the human population is increasing day-by-day, leading to a context where there is a rapidly growing demand for resources for human consumption. There is a huge difference between educated-uneducated, trained-untrained, skilled- unskilled and professional-nonprofessional in grasping the opportunities in various fields like employment, accessibility and public distribution systems. As a result, the class difference has become wider in every society. In other words, as poverty becomes one of the biggest challenges in the developmental process of every society, there is a growing socio-economic and developmental gap regionally and politically.

  • The Reasons for Insurgent Movement and Ethnic Conflicts in Manipur
GOVERNMENT POLICIES: THE REASONS FOR INSURGENT MOVEMENT AND ETHNIC CONFLICTS IN MANIPUR A. S. VAREKAN Research Scholar Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune (MS) INDIA This paper closely examines the possibilities of the various important government policies formulated and implemented by the British Government, Government of India, and the Government of Manipur in over a century towards the current political and ethnic instability in the state of Manipur. The policies might have been formulated and implemented with good intentions as at the larger interest of the state and nation at large but seem to have miserably failed in governance and integrating the people into the national mainstream. The origin, breeding and thriving of the numerous insurgent groups and the unending ethnic centric conflicts and violence in the state has its root in the policies. Today, we find that the ethnic centric problems including insurgency draw its lifeline from these very policies. Key words: Innerline permit, AFSPA, Disturbed area, Sixth schedule-Autonomous district council, Insurgency INTRODUCTION The British arrived in the princely kingdom of Manipur from the Cachar hills not with the intention to rule but to trade and also on the invitation of the King to help keep the Burmese invading army at bay. The kingdom was brought under the direct rule of the British empire under the proclamation issued on 21st August, 1891.. When the British left the sub-continent in 1947, Manipur princely statehood and independence was restored but was eventually annexed to the independent democratic India on Oct. 10, 1949 after King Budhachandra Singh signed the document of annexation.

DEFINING CRITICAL FEMINIST JUSTPEACE: WOMEN’S PEACEBUILDING PRAXIS AND FEMINIST POLITICAL THOUGHT A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Karie Cross Eileen Botting, Director Graduate Program in Peace Studies and Political Science Notre Dame, Indiana June 2017 DEFINING CRITICAL FEMINIST JUSTPEACE: WOMEN’S PEACEBUILDING PRAXIS AND FEMINIST POLITICAL THOUGHT Abstract by Karie Cross The central concerns of my dissertation are the meaning of gender-just peace and the methods for pursuing it. Entering an ongoing debate within peace studies about the United Nations’ top-down, institutions-oriented “liberal peace,” I use ethnographic research with women’s peacebuilding groups in India alongside feminist political thought to argue for a “critical feminist justpeace,” developed from the bottom-up and taking the diverse experiences of marginalized women as motivation. Women in Manipur, India, try to build peace across ethnic, religious, and class-based boundaries. I analyze their practices, synthesizing them into a peacebuilding “praxis”—reflection combined with action with the goal of transformation—which we can fruitfully compare to Western feminist thought. This comparison of praxis and theory suggests that where the liberal peace fails women, a radically inclusive critical feminist justpeace will come closer to success. Such Karie Cross a peace is never achieved, but is rather an on-going process of contestation and relationship-building
