    5.3 Water Environment (1) Scarcity and Degradation of Freshwater in Egypt The water resources of Egypt could be divided into two systems; the Nile system and the groundwater system in desert area. The Nile system consisting of the Nile River, its branches, the irrigation canals, the agricultural drains and the valley and Delta aquifers. These water resources are interconnected. This system is replenished yearly with approximately 58.5 billion m3 of freshwater, as is given in the survey by MWRI. Egypt depends on the Nile for almost all of water resources; naturally, it is a crucial issue on how to preserve water quality of the River Nile. On the other hand, water in desert area is in deep sandstone aquifer and is generally non-renewable source, though considerable amounts of water are stored in the groundwater system. Available water per capita per year for all purpose in 1999 was about 900ｍ3; nonetheless, it is expected to fall to 670ｍ3 and 536ｍ3 by the years 2017 and 2025, respectively.

In modern times, Mahatma Gandhi and Saad Zaghloul shared common goals on the independence of their countries, a relationship that was to blossom into an exceptionally close friendship between Gamal Abdel Nasser and Jawaharlal Nehru, leading to a Friendship Treaty between the two countries in 1955. Political Relations Both the countries share close political understanding based on long history of contacts and cooperation on bilateral, regional and global issues, and multilateral fora and were the founding members of Non-Aligned Movement. Since the 1980s, there have been four Prime Ministerial visits from India to Egypt: Shri Rajiv Gandhi (1985); Shri P. V. Narasimha Rao (1995); Shri I. K. Gujral (1997); and Dr. Manmohan Singh (2009, NAM Summit). From the Egyptian side, President Hosni Mubarak visited India in 1982, in 1983 (NAM Summit), and again in 2008. High level exchanges with Egypt continued after the 2011 Egyptian Revolution and then President Mohamed Morsi visited India in March 2013. External Affairs Minister (EAM) Shri. S. M. Krishna visited Cairo in March 2012 and the Egyptian Foreign Minister Mr. Nabil Fahmy visited India in December 2013. After the new government led by President Sisi took over in June 2014, EAM Smt. Sushma Swaraj paid a visit to Cairo in August 2015. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met President Sisi on the sidelines of UNGA, New York in September 2015. President Mukherjee and Prime Minister Modi met President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi during the Third India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi in October 2015.

    Golden Triangle March 2016 Golden Triangle Page 1 Mining Sector Overview Egypt’s mining sector has a large collection of mineral resources with untapped potential. In 2013, Egypt was Africa’s second largest crude steel producer after South Africa and the world’s eighth largest producer of direct reduced iron. In addition, Egypt was a key producer of nitrogen fertilizer, phosphate rock, and cement. Mineral-based and metal commodities produced by companies in Egypt included secondary copper, gold, direct reduced iron, ferroalloys, iron ore, crude steel, tin, manganese, and aluminum. Industrial minerals produced by Egypt included basalt, barite, dolomite, granite, fluorspar, sandstone, limestone, marble, salt, quartz, sulfur, and sand. Production of fuel minerals included crude oil and condensate, coal, and natural gas. Throughout the year, the extractive industries 2 Extractive Industries Sector sector has been a driver of growth for the 1 Egyptian economy, however, since 2011 the 0 sector has been underperforming. The -1 extractive industries sector recorded growth -2 rates of -2.7% and -4.1% in FY 2013/14 and -3 2014/15 respectively. However, in FY 2014/15 -4 the sector received 15.5% of the total -5 investments. The contribution of the sector to FY09/10 FY10/11 FY11/12 FY12/13 FY13/14 FY14/15 economic growth in FY 2014/15 stood at -17.31.
